"description": "The Village Education Resource Center (VERC) was established in 1977 as a project of Save the Children-USA with funding from UNICEF. In 1981 it was indigenized as a Private Voluntary Development Organization (PVDO). VERC was designed to fill the void of in-country capacity building support to government and related community and rural development agencies. Its initial activities included communication, education, training material development, imparting training, conduct participatory action research and technology promotion.\r\nVERC’s field program evolved out of its need for an environment to apply its innovations in participatory development. VERC also worked to undertake capacity building activities of the rural poor, beginning with women’s literacy, health and sanitation and human resource development.\r\nRight from the beginning, it was however obvious that VERC’s main forte was its training services. Its commitment to quality materials, content and trainers quickly led to its recognition as a leading organization in this field. Its variety of development education, management, sectoral and skill training courses have reached almost around 417680 people to March 2012.\r\nVision : A self-reliant society based on justice, equity and sustainability, where every human being has the equal opportunity to maximize their potentials.\r\nIn all its work, VERC is committed to the principle of “self-actualization” a process of raising people’s consciousness to a level at which they can realize their potentials and are motivated to reorder their lives. \r\nPROGRAMS\r\nEntering its 36th year of operation, VERC’s activities have both grown and diversified as to include:\r\nField level\r\n\r\n Institution Building & Income Generation\r\n Water, Sanitation Hygiene Promotion, Arsenic Mitigation & Technology \r\n Development\r\n Education\r\n Health – Preventive and Clinical support on maternal and child health \r\n care\r\n Environmental Protection\r\n Assisting the GOB in promoting good governance in the country \r\n Disaster Preparedness and Management\r\n Integrating Disability Issues in Community Development\r\n\r\nSupport Services \r\n Training & Communication\r\n Research, Monitoring, Evaluation & Documentation\r\n Capacity Building ofs Local Organisations and Strengthening of Local \r\n Government \r\nAbout eighty percent of VERC's services are aimed at the interest of the poor women and children. In many of its human development efforts, VERC’s success has been encouraging, though along with its share of ups VERC has had to endure its share of downs as well. It is in the face of adversity that VERC has learnt many of its most valuable lessons. A long-term strategic framework has been developed by which VERC hopes to maximize sustainability of its development efforts.\r\n",

"description": "Practical Action (PA) aims to demonstrate and advocate the sustainable use of technology to reduce poverty in developing countries.Practical Action was founded in 1966, as ITDG (the Intermediate Technology Development Group), by the radical economist Dr EF Schumacher to prove that his philosophy of ‘Small is Beautiful’ could bring real and sustainable improvements to people’s lives. With their commitment to poverty reduction, environmental conservation and technology choice they think Practical Action is uniquely placed to contribute to a world free of poverty. Practical Action has a unique approach to development – they don't start with technology, but with people. The tools may be simple or sophisticated – but to provide long-term, appropriate and practical answers, they must be firmly in the hands of local people: people who shape technology and control it for themselves.",

"description": "Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) is a leading non-government organization (NGO) of Bangladesh established with the motto of ‘Divine and Humanitarian Service’ in 1958 by Hazrat Khanbahadur Ahsanullah (r). an eminent educationist, social reformer and spiritual leader of the Indian sub-continent. The founding aim of DAM is the social and spiritual development of the human community at large. DAM made paradigm shift in the mid-seventies from welfare to development approach with programme operation primarily in education and human development sectors. Since that time DAM has been diversifying its development interventions with expansion of programme coverage both geographically and in population. With its multifaceted and diversified programmes and activities DAM is now in a very unique position to work with the people, particularly the disadvantaged, with need-based services toward improvement of their living conditions.\r\n\r\nDhaka Ahsania Mission launched first community learning centre, locally known as Gonokendra, in 1987. The centre is meant for lifelong learning and community development. There are more than 100 Gonokendras across the country, of which five are ICT-based. As the objectives of the centres were sharing knowledge and information, they started with traditional tools. Each of the centres is functioning as a community-based information centre of local GO-NGO extension departments. People can come to the centres to read newspapers and exchange experience, learn from success stories, get information about innovations, which can improve their livelihoods. A few centres started using computer for interactive information communication. However, these centres do not have any Internet connection.\r\n\r\nVision: The vision of DAM is a society of people, the disadvantaged population groups/communities in particular, free from poverty, experiencing a social transformation for fulfillment of basic rights and having an improved social, economic and spiritual living.\r\n\r\nMain area of focus:\r\nICT for Development (ICT4D)\r\nTraining , Capacity building, Material development & resources mobilisation\r\nEducation\r\nLivelihood Development\r\nHealth\r\nHuman Rights\r\n\r\nKey Activities:\r\nNon-formal Education, Literacy and Continuing Education\r\nEstablishment of a Science & Technology University\r\nEstablishment of a modern Cancer & General Hospital\r\nVocational/Skills Training\r\nFood security and Agriculture\r\nMicrocredit\r\nWater, Sanitation and Public Health\r\nAnti drug and tobacco movement\r\nAccess Health and empowerment\r\nResearch\r\nTraining and material development\r\nAnti human trafficking movement\r\nDisaster risk reduction\r\nClimetchange issues\r\nChild and adolescent protection\r\n\r\nGeographic coverage (District wise): More tha two third of the country including Dhaka, Manikganj, Gazipur, Narsindi, Mymensing, Jamalpur, Kishoreganj, Panchagar, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Sherpur, Netrokona, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulivibazar, Kushtia, Meherpur, Jhenidah, Chuadanga, Jessore, Satkhira, Barisal, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Barguna, Bhola, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chittagong, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Banderban\r\n\r\nTarget groups: \r\nOut of School Children and Adults\r\nUnskilled Manpower\r\nDisaster Prone Population\r\nHIV/AIDS Victims\r\nWoman and children vulnerable to trafficking and violence\r\nPeople in hard to reach areas\r\n\r\nAffiliation and membership:\r\nBangladesh Telecentre Network (BTN)\r\nMember, Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC\r\nMember, Operational Relationship with UNESCO\r\nMember, Associate Status with UNDPI\r\nMember, Asia-South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education\r\nMember, International Council of Adult Education\r\nMember, APPEAL Resource & Training Consortium.\r\n",

"description": "Established in 1972 to assist with relief and rehabilitation of greater Rangpur-Dinajpur immediately following the War of Independence, the RDRS programme evolved into a sectoral then comprehensive effort. Formerly the Bangladesh field programme of the Geneva-based Lutheran World Service, RDRS became an autonomous national NGO in 1997. RDRS however maintains strong international connections. With LWF (as an Associate Programme); with ACT International; with its core partner agencies mainly in Europe, North America and Japan; and with regional networks such as AZEECON, SAGA and others.\r\n\r\nRDRS came into being at the time of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, in 1971. Set up by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) to help refugees fleeing conflict across the border, it returned with them after liberation to carry out much-needed rehabilitation in the devastated and long-neglected northwest – greater Rangpur - Dinajpur Districts. In 1976, a sectoral development programme was launched to assist the poorest in agriculture, community development, health and women’s economic activities. Construction of roads, bridges, markets and schools continued.\r\nDuring these years, RDRS was the leading non-governmental agency in the northwest. It is also credited with introducing many major innovations: the treadle pump (its most famous invention, allowing crops to be grown in winter); wheat production and other crop diversification; vegetable gardens; and, women’s advancement, not least the picture of women on bicycles.\r\nBy the late 1980s, an integrated Comprehensive programme superseded its sectoral work, focused on conscientisation and group organization of the poor, emphasizing social, educational and economic elements. Physical infrastructure development continued under the Rural Works Project. \r\nSince then, RDRS successes have included the ‘greening the north’ through its roadside and homestead tree plantation programme; improving life on the chars (river islands on the Brahmaputra); raising awareness of women’s rights; promoting savings, credit and skills training to improve the livelihoods of the poor and, the emergence of Union Federations - self-managed people’s organisations of the rural poor. \r\nThe RDRS programme continues to evolve and innovate. Current realities mean the programme now comprises a range of various projects and financing, large and small, which all contribute to following vision and mission.\r\n\r\nVision \r\n\r\nThe achievement by the rural poor of meaningful political, social, and economic empowerment, peace and justice and a sustainable environment through their individual and collective effort.\r\n\r\nMission \r\n\r\nRDRS works with the rural poor & their organization \r\n• Build their capacity and confidence\r\n• Claim and establish their rights\r\n• Promote good governance\r\n• Improve access to resources and services \r\n\r\n",

"description": "Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) was established in 1953 under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Humaira Sayeed the founding president of the Association. The Association is governed by a National Executive committee consisting of 21 Members. National luminaries like late Alamgir M. A. Kabir, late Professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim, late Dr. (Captain) Abul Kashem, late Dr. Syed A K M Hafizur Rahman, Mr. M Shamsul Islam, Shaheed Md. Maizuddin, Kazi Anisur Rahman and other eminent personalities led FPAB since its inception.\r\n\r\nThe prime objective which inspired the establishment of the Association was to improve quality of life of the under privileged section of the people by advocating family planning as a basic human right and motivating people towards the concept of small family.\r\n\r\nMission:\r\nFPAB aims to improve the quality of lives of individuals, by campaigning for sexual health and reproductive right through advocacy and services, especially for poor and vulnerable people.\r\nFPAB defends the right of all young people to enjoy their sexual lives free from ill-health, unwanted pregnancy, violence and discrimination.\r\nFPAB supports a woman's right to choose to termite her pregnancy legally and safely.\r\nFPAB strives to eliminate Sexually Transmitted Infections and to eradicate HIV-AIDS, and FPAB carries its work in partnership with other organizations and donors to achieve our goals more efficiently and effectively.\r\n\r\nAs an affiliate of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), FPAB is the oldest and largest family planning non-government organization in Bangladesh, which pioneered family planning movement in the country. FPAB played an important role in formulating national family planning programme introduced by the then government of Pakistan in 1965. With the span of more than 50 years of its emergence, FPAB has made a significant achievement in creating awareness among the eligible couples about family planning and annually contributes 7% of the total national family planning performance. In conformity with the global and national needs, FPAB shifted its thrust from lone family planning interventions to the holistic approach of reproductive health in mid 90s of the last century. Instead of targeting fertile couples, interventions of FPAB now involve men and women of all ages with special focus on the disadvantaged segment of the population. Beneficiaries of FPAB have now exceeded ten million people. ",

"description": "Dalit is a Bengali word, stands for “oppressed”. Many also decode Dalit as untouchable. Dalit people have not been socially included in mainstream due to their so called “impure” profession e.g. skinning, tanning, shoe polishing, sweeping, sewerage cleaning, burying of dead bodies, saloon, drum beating, washing, etc. Literacy rate among the Dalits is about 25% which is far behind from the national average.\r\n\r\n“Dalit” to “DALIT” as an Organization\r\nThe organization has been named “DALIT” to represent the Dalit and indigenous community people. DALIT got registration from NGO Affairs Bureau (N.1374) in 1999. Some Dalit people were the visionary-dreamers of DALIT and autobiography of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar was their immense inspiration. DALIT approaches to the Dalit community with employment opportunities, health and education facilities. Actually DALIT is a one of the non profit organization, working for empowerment of socially excluded groups to lend a hand them to meet up their basic needs. Human resource development and exploring potentiality of the Dalit indigenous community people are the ultimate goal and objective of the organization. DALIT started its Water, Sanitation, Arsenic Mitigation and Hygiene Promotion in 2003 through community led ‘integrated, participatory, empowering’ approach. DALIT’s goal is to provide sustainable and integrated water, sanitation, arsenic mitigation and hygiene promotion services in the remote rural areas and break the contamination cycle of unsanitary latrines, contaminated water and unsafe hygiene practices. The program aims to ensure access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene promotion services for the disadvantaged communities in remote rural areas of Khulna, Jessore and Satkhira districts with the donor support. The core of the program is the CBOs as main actor at community level to assess existing water and sanitation situation of the entire village and identify issues that need urgent action. They select sites for community water sources, collect contribution money and monitor usage and maintenance of community water points and latrines. To strengthen the capacity of CBOs, DALIT provided various training for their capacity development in a way to achieve national targets as well as Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) sets the target of achieving 100% sanitation and safe water coverage by 2015. \r\n\r\nDALIT interventions are to improve the health of the disadvantaged population in an affordable, equitable and sustainable way in reducing the burden of disease, relieve human suffering and ensure considerable economic benefits, with particular focus on reducing child morbidity and mortality. Mention that hand washing alone can reduce mortality by 42%. Among the constraints to improve water and sanitation are the lack of hygienic knowledge and practices, insufficient and inadequate financial resources, and inappropriate adaptation of drinking water sources and sanitation systems. The community led approaches in the ASWASH program may help to conceptualize the water and sanitation situation, leading towards a solution overcoming these constraints. It will help the community to understand the necessity of integrating safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices, which might be a more effective measure than providing only complimentary hardware.\r\nThe situation of rural sanitation, hygiene and water supply in Bangladesh indicates that 32% people use sanitary latrines, 9% people open defecating, 20% people use hanging latrines, 7% children with diarrhea, 15% safe disposal of faces of children of under 5, and 72%* people have access to safe drinking water. "description": "Friendship is a value-based organisation founded in Bangladesh in 1998 by Runa Khan and Yves Marre. Friendship identifies and reaches the poorest of the poor and the most marginalised communities.\r\n\r\nOur flagship project is the Lifebuoy Friendship Hospital (LFH) an oil barge converted to a floating hospital to provide healthcare to 4 million of Bangladesh's most marginalised people. With an aim to provide essential basic services in the most inaccessible and hard to reach areas, Friendship initially focused on the chars (nomadic islands) and riverbank areas of northern Bangladesh; places where there was no basic healthcare or education offered by either government or non-governmental organisations. Over time we expanded from providing primary and secondary healthcare to education, income generation, relief and rehabilitation programmes, and, most recently, interest-free loans and savings schemes.\r\nFrom our emergency relief work, especially after cyclone Sidr in November 2007, stemmed our focus and subsequent activities in the southern part of Bangladesh. In recent years, the communities that we work with are seeing the worst effects of climate change such as seasons drastically changing and crippling agriculture, increasing floods and land erosion in the north, and increasing sea level and salinity in the south. To successfully support people who are having to shift their homes two to three times a year, losing their traditional source of livelihood, and their land, our programmes have had to integrate the effects of climate change in order for them to be effective.
