"description": "The Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) is a faith-based network organisation of 21 Christian church denominations, involved in the provision of health care and training of health professionals. Established in 1967, the Association currently comprises 58 hospitals, 114 health centres and clinics, and 10 health training institutions. Membership has gone up from 25 in 1967 to 182 in 2012. The network members collectively have a staff strength of approximately 7,300. \r\n\r\nCHAG was initially founded in 1967, as a Voluntary Professional Association and subsequently registered as a Corporate Body in 1968 under the Trustees (Incorporation) Act, 1962 Act 106, the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference and the Christian Council of Ghana being the main stakeholders in the Association. The Ghana Pentecostal Council was later admitted into membership as an Associate Member. \r\n\r\nThe governance structure of CHAG comprises three distinct layers of the Council, the Board and the Secretariat. The Board is composed of nominated representatives of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Christian Council of Ghana and the Ghana Pentecostal Council. The Board is tasked to support and monitor the implementation of decisions and programmes by the secretariat that serve the interest of members. The Secretariat is responsible for managing the network and ensuring that the aims and objectives of the association and the needs of members towards contributing to the achievement of national health outcomes are met. \r\n\r\nThe uniqueness of CHAG as an organisation is the independence and autonomy of its members. This is recognised as the strength of the organisation where the diversity of its members is respected and harnessed for human centred, affordable and high quality patient care.\r\n\r\nThe Vision of CHAG is:\r\n“A healthy nation, Christ’s Healing Ministry Fulfilled”\r\n\r\nThe mission of CHAG is: \r\nTo promote the healing ministry of Christ and be a reliable partner in the Health Sector in providing the health needs of the people in Ghana in fulfilment of Christ’s mandate to go and heal the sick.\r\n \r\nThe core values of CHAG are \r\n• Christian identity and witness\r\n• Unity in Diversity\r\n• Respect for the dignity of the person\r\n• Holistic health care\r\n• Creativity and Excellence\r\n• Accountability and Transparency\r\n• Co-operation and partnership\r\n• Option for the poor and the marginalized\r\n\r\nThe objectives of CHAG are:\r\n1. To foster a closer partnership between Church-related health services and the Ministry of Health to promote health care in Ghana.\r\n2. To assist in planning and coordinating the training programmes and other medical work or services of the members of the Association.\r\n3. To assist the members of the Association with respect to the employment of staff, provision of supplies to the hospitals or other medical services maintained or supported or controlled or supervised by any member of the Association.\r\n4. To encourage and assist the members to promote the healing ministry for the benefit and the welfare of the people of Ghana.\r\n5. To implement policies set by the members and do such other things in cooperation with the members of the Association as are conducive to the attainment of the above aims and objectives of the Association or any of them and generally to act for the benefit and welfare of the people living in Ghana.",

"description": "A fair, free and sustainable world – that is what Hivos, the Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation, wants to contribute to. Together with local organisations in developing countries, Hivos strives for a world in which all citizens – both men and women – have equal access to resources and opportunities for development.\r\nHivos is a Dutch non-governmental organisation guided by humanist values. A number of its core values are human dignity and self determination, an aversion to dogmas and totalitarian regimes, and a sense of mutual solidarity. The organisation is committed to poor and marginalised peoples in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It strives for the long-term improvement of their circumstances and for the empowerment of women in particular.\r\n\r\nThe work of Hivos aims at structurally alleviating poverty, with an emphasis on civil society building and on sustainable economic development. The efforts of Hivos are focused on nine themes: financial services and business development; sustainable production; human rights and democratisation; HIV/AIDS; gender, women and development; art and culture; ICT & media; advocacy and communication; and the knowledge programme. You can read more about each one of these themes on this website.\r\n\r\nJoining forces and pooling resources is crucial to achieve the objectives of Hivos. Hivos supports over 800 partner organisations in more than 30 countries through financial means and institutional support as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience. In addition, Hivos works together with a number of organisations, companies and governments in the Netherlands and Europe, and it belongs to various national and international networks. Hivos also conducts advocacy activities itself in the Netherlands, throughout Europe and worldwide.\r\n\r\nHivos is a non-governmental organisation with a societal goal which plays a public role. Hivos is one of the four largest organisations in the ‘co-financing system’ of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Dutch general public, the Dutch government, other sponsors, partners and partner organisations in developing countries are the most important stakeholders.\r\n\r\nHivos is ISO certified; it has the CBF quality mark and is one of the beneficiaries of the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.",

"description": "Acacia Water “for solutions in groundwater” was established in 2003 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences). Acacia Water focuses on groundwater in relation to surface water, environment and infrastructure. This varies from implementation of field measurements and model calculations, to giving training and strategic advice. Acacia distinguishes itself by the cooperation with the University, as a result of which Acacia Water has access to the latest scientific developments in the field of hydrology and environment. We translate this knowledge to innovative and practical solutions.\r\n\r\nThe strength of Acacia Water is the specialization in the field of groundwater, while at the same time being able to place issues in a broader perspective and to link up with other fields of action. As a result we often work in a multidisciplinary environment with a broad variety of expertise.\r\n\r\nThe Acacia team exists of passionate and enthusiastic groundwater experts. In the past five years our expertise has been made available to a large range of clients, including the World Bank, UNESCO, UNICEF, the EU and national governments. In the Netherlands our main clients are waterboards, water supply companies and local- and regional governments. By continuing our involvement in international projects, particularly in the field of rural water supply, Acacia water continues to give content to its social responsibility.\r\n\r\nWe look forward to discuss in what way Acacia Water can play a role in providing solutions in the field of ground - and water management to your organization.",

"description": "Friendship is a value-based organisation founded in Bangladesh in 1998 by Runa Khan and Yves Marre. Friendship identifies and reaches the poorest of the poor and the most marginalised communities.\r\n\r\nOur flagship project is the Lifebuoy Friendship Hospital (LFH) an oil barge converted to a floating hospital to provide healthcare to 4 million of Bangladesh's most marginalised people. With an aim to provide essential basic services in the most inaccessible and hard to reach areas, Friendship initially focused on the chars (nomadic islands) and riverbank areas of northern Bangladesh; places where there was no basic healthcare or education offered by either government or non-governmental organisations. Over time we expanded from providing primary and secondary healthcare to education, income generation, relief and rehabilitation programmes, and, most recently, interest-free loans and savings schemes.\r\nFrom our emergency relief work, especially after cyclone Sidr in November 2007, stemmed our focus and subsequent activities in the southern part of Bangladesh. In recent years, the communities that we work with are seeing the worst effects of climate change such as seasons drastically changing and crippling agriculture, increasing floods and land erosion in the north, and increasing sea level and salinity in the south. To successfully support people who are having to shift their homes two to three times a year, losing their traditional source of livelihood, and their land, our programmes have had to integrate the effects of climate change in order for them to be effective. "description": "SEND-West Africa is a consolidation of three autonomous national non-governmental organisations: SEND-Ghana, SEND-Liberia and SEND-Sierra Leone with each country programme guided by an independent strategic plan. SEND became operational in Ghana in 1998; Liberia in 2004; and Sierra-Leone in 2007. Informed by the marked differences in the political and economic contexts of these countries, each country programme has separate management and programming strategies to respond effectively to the respective country needs and peculiarities.\r\n\r\nSEND-Ghana is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in August 1998 with the maiden name: Social Enterprise Development (SEND) Foundation of West Africa. In 2000, SEND-Ghana started the implementation of its first programme – the Eastern Corridor Livelihood Security Promotion Programme (ECLSPP) – aimed at addressing practical development needs of communities through an integrated approach to service delivery. \r\n\r\nSEND Liberia is the second oldest and largest Program. Efforts to establish it started in 1999 but this initiative was aborted due to the escalation of the civil war at the time. In 2003 the comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the war was achieved and SEND, like most civil society organizations, in 2004, renewed engagement with Liberia by registering with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs.\r\n\r\nSEND Sierra Leone’s programme aims to alleviate poverty and promote equality between women and men in Kailahun District. Through its projects SEND-Sierra Leone applies a participatory integrated development approach, which promotes gender equality and includes advocacy for the poor.It aims to work to address basic needs, as well as the systemic causes of poverty and injustice.",

UNHCO has championed the Rights Based Approach (RBA) to healthcare delivery and contributed to efforts to improve community participation and accountability.\r\n\r\nThe focus is on the most vulnerable persons including women, PwDs, children, and PLWHA.\r\n\r\nThe strategy is through;\r\n\r\n- Raising awareness among health service users, providers and policy makers about health rights and responsibilities.\r\n- Policy research, Advocacy and review processes to address access, equity, quality and accountability.\r\n- Creating synergies with other CSOs, relevant Government departments, development partners and strategic allies and establishing a credible working partnership with the media among others.\r\n- Feedback to promote and improve communication between users and providers by strengthening referral and redress mechanisms and building a partnership for conflict resolution.\r\n",

(See map on the right). SANA has prepared a 5 year plan to implement a further 1,000 water points and 10,000 sand units\r\n\r\nDistricts covered by SANA in Nyanza Province\r\nInterest in the sector has been growing over the years through campaigns both nationally and internationally leading to formulation of Vision 21, PHAST and the emergence of the new water policy in Kenya, Sessional Paper No. 1 (1999) on Water Resources Development and Management.\r\nThe immediate stakeholders in the former RDWSSP garnered support and established SANA, which was registered in October 2000. Since then efforts towards positioning SANA within the water and sanitation sector have attracted considerable attention from patner stakeholders, including the local community and leaders from Districts in the Province.",

"description": "Dia Vikas was established in early 2008 as a social investor to support the growth of Indian microfinance and encourage the development of start-up operations in underserved areas. Our primary objective is the reduction in poverty rather than a financial return. \r\nDia Vikas partners with microfinance institutions to directly touch the lives of millions of people in profound need in an effective and very efficient way. \r\n\r\n\r\nIndia is home to the largest number of poor in the world, with over 900 million people living on less than US$2 per day, as per United Nations Human Development Report, 2007/2008. This statistic is overwhelming. \r\n\r\n\r\nHowever, microfinance is recognised as a sustainable, scaleable poverty alleviation response, providing resources to individuals to support and grow their livelihoods and improve the quality of their lives. Currently, we estimate that microfinance in India serves around 20 million of an estimated 100 million potential households. This leaves at least 80 million households unserved and trapped in a cycle of poverty.\r\n\r\nThe portfolio of 18 microfinance institutions (MFIs) we support in India serve over 16,00,000 million clients today. Provided the required capital is available, the portfolio is forecast to grow to 25 partners, serving around five million clients by 2015.",
