Consequently, the implementation of interventions in HBC depends greatly on the role played by community volunteers that are closely working with the immediate caregivers. Therefore, the support the church is providing to the community groups has helped and encouraged communities to respond positively in caring and supporting the HBC clients within the respective communities. During the last three years with support from Cordaid, the Commission has a record of success stories in issues of mobilisation of community volunteers such that it has created a good network of volunteers and the health facilities within its catchment areas. It has also strengthened the community structures hence making the HBC groups sustainable.",

This flagship project is being supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the Ministry of Health, who are currently conducting a Randomised Control Trial through IPA (Innovations for Poverty Action) to establish the impact of CHCs on community health. \r\n\r\nOur team is a dedicated group of local development practitioners based out of Zimbabwe and Rwanda, committed to assisting rural and urban communities in developing countries improve their standards of living through safe hygiene, water, sanitation and poverty alleviation, women's empowerment, food security and sustainable livelihoods using Community Health Clubs as a vehicle for change. \r\n\r\nTo this end we provide assistance in all aspects of a CHC programme, including feasibility, design, development of training materials, training of trainers, research, monitoring and evaluation, and are the foremost organization for research, dissemination, advocacy and mentoring in the Community Health Club Approach. \r\n\r\nWe support local and international NGOs, Agencies and particularly strengthening Environmental Health Departments within Ministries of Health in Africa. "description": "SANNAM is a network of nurses and midwives of the SADC region, which was formed in 2002. This was as a result of deliberations that took place at a satellite meeting preceding the International Aids Conference in Durban in 2000. National Nurses Associations had in their own countries been working on improving the conditions for nurses, however in the absence of mechanisms to share best practices; they had been left to re invent the wheel.\r\nNurses and midwives of the region realized that they have to join hands in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic that was and is still hitting the SADC region hard. Thus this network was formed. SANNAM has made tremendous strides towards strengthening NNAs/NNOs (National Nursing Associations/Organisations) through capacity building, networking and sharing of best practices. Its 15 member NNOs/NNAs currently represent over 200,000 Nurses and Midwives. \r\n\r\nThis regional structure is registered in terms of the Non-profit Organizations Act of 1997 in South Africa and coordinates all projects from its Secretariat established at 605 Church Street (DENOSA Headquarters), Pretoria 0001, South Africa. \r\n\r\nThe Secretariat is led by an Executive Director, supported by a qualified Finance Officer and an Administrative Secretary and overseen by an Executive Committee of five members, who are presidents of member NNAs/NNOs. The secretariat ensures the effective implementation and management of regional projects through coordinating meetings, contracting services effectively, and monitoring and evaluation. It also serves to strengthen the network and ensure that programmes are integrated through sharing information and consolidating the organisation. \r\nThe Secretariat is managed in agreement with labour regulations of the host country (South Africa) and collaborates with SADC Secretariat Health Sector and HIV/AIDS Unit for regional concerns and partnership in some projects. Member NNAs/NNOs are legal entities registered in their countries. The organization has initiated negotiations with the SADC secretariat for long –term sustainability.\r\n\r\nSANNAM collaborate with other regional and international organizations such as: CIDA through CNA, ICN, WHO – Afro, ILO, UNAIDS, EQUINET, Universities…and is member of the GHWA.\r\n\r\nSANNAM has received support from CORDAID since 2009 to implement a 2 year project that aimed at improving the working conditions of Nurses and Midwives in the region through strengthening the lobbying and advocating capacity of NNAs/NNOs. The results of this project inspired the need to further enhance advocacy capacity of Nursing and Midwifery leaders at national and peripheral level for effective involvement in decision making and influencing health policies.\r\n\r\nSANNAM vision is: Improved regional health services through strengthening National Nurses Associations/Organisations (NNAs/NNOs); its activities focus on: networking, capacity building, experiences sharing, twinning partnership, lobby and advocacy, research (not well developed) and support to members (e.g coaching and solidarity interventions).",

"description": "SEEtrust (2007) is a private Dutch-South African initiative focusing on integrating social and economic development in the Johannesburg area – through establishing entrepreneurial partnerships.\r\n\r\nIn these partnerships entrepreneurial people from informal settlements and SEEtrust join forces to create jobs through economic activity, improve the quality of social and educational programmes, ensure structural sources of income for social programs, and start up small commercial activities. These partnerships allow all people involved to grow their talents and enable individuals and communities to create a better future for themselves.\r\n\r\nSEE stands for Social and Economical Empowerment. SEE also stands for seeing: seeing possibilities, seeing others, seeing strengths, seeing a future. Trust stands for a business trust, and also for trusting: trusting people and their abilities, trusting the creative potential of partnerships.\r\n\r\nWomen entrepreneurship:\r\n\r\nWomen are major players in social development, because of their natural tendency to focus on the well-being of children and communities as a whole. In poor communities where children are very vulnerable and family-structures are fragile (because of the Aids epidemic, high unemployment and substance abuse), that focus is much needed.\r\n\r\nOur aim is to establish partnerships between entrepreneurial women in South Africa and the Netherlands. Women who want to address societal issues, and who – to make a real impact – do so by joining forces with other entrepreneurial women.\r\n\r\nOur activities focus on:\r\n- connecting people, opportunities and resources: we connect entrepreneurial women with one another, with markets, with investors and/or sponsors\r\n- enabling mutual learning: we organise network meetings (locally and internationally), so that participants can act as a source of inspiration, support and learning for each other\r\n- developing expertise and know-how: we will research – in collaboration with univerisities – what the key factors are in growing women entrepreneurship and developing healthy, self-sustaining communities",

"description": "The Max Foundation was founded in 2005 with the prime goal of combating child mortality. It recognizes that malnutrition and easily preventable diseases are large contributors to under five child death worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Accordingly, it carries out projects centered around water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), nutrition and safe motherhood in Bangladesh and Nepal with plans to expand further in these countries as well as in others. With its business-driven approach the Max Foundation aims to be as effective and sustainable possible via proven and innovative approaches on community strengthening, by achieving maximum impact with scarce resources, institutional embedding, and sustainable market models. The Max foundation envisions a world where easily preventable disease and malnutrition are no longer the cause of mortality for children under the age of five. \r\n\r\nThe three intervention pillars incorporated in the Max Foundation Projects:\r\n•\tWater, Sanitation and hygiene (WASH)\r\n•\tNutrition \r\n•\tSexual reproductive health (SRH)\r\n\r\nFor more information see www.maxfoundation.nl ",

To reach its targets the Huisman Foundation looks for cooperation with likeminded foundations and initiatives. The main focus of the Huisman Foundation itself is on:\r\n\r\n * Water and sanitation\r\n * Sustainable, clean energy\r\n * Health and wellbeing\r\n * Support of commercial activities and entrepreneurship\r\n\r\nThe Huisman Foundation is convinced that aid must comply with certain conditions in order to be effective. Aid must be demand-driven and aimed at continuity. Aid should make the beneficiaries independent and defensible instead of dependable. Finally, aid should have an integrated and multisectoral orientation. The central pillars of an effective aid are the economic development and the improvement of lifelihood.",

EMF identifies, promotes and incubates small-scale projects that are innovative, practical, solution-oriented, and have a broad impact in the target country. We achieve this through providing three types of services:\r\n\r\n1) Think tank:\r\nWe watch trends and set out a vision on the kind of innovation that would alleviate the shortage of clean water in developing countries. We spread awareness of third world water issues through articles, documentaries and workshops.\r\n \r\n2) Match Maker:\r\nWe build networks and translate trends and visions from the think tank into viable projects and initiatives by bringing key partners together.\r\n\r\n3) Incubator:\r\nWe initiate pilot projects and compile business plans and road maps to scale up successful pilots.",

"description": "Making water and sanitation available in poor countries is a problem massive in size and urgency, hundreds of millions of units are necessary right now. \r\nOnly Gandhi's solution -self-reliance- can provide this, and this with the means of the poor only. If the billions of rural poor only have a bush knife as tool, then the water pump they may need should be made with only that bush knife and resources available to them. \r\n\r\nIf these billions of rural poor would be motivated by the quality of an adequate design made available to them they would put this information to practice. \r\n\r\nHow with such limited means crucial quality can be achieved is mission and task of Foundation \"Demotech, design for self-reliance\". Demotech finds such solutions by tenacious research in its laboratory and during field work, Experience gained is shared with for whom it matters in its website, video-reporting and published papers.\r\n\r\nThe Demotech Rope Pump design from 1975, first field tested in 1976 in Burkina Faso, embodied many of the required qualities for unsupported self-sustained use at the Bottom of the Pyramid. Demotech and others have reported where, when and how this happened. \r\nPopularity of the Rope Pump design induced some NGO's to partly subsidized providing of this water pump, often with a more centralized manufacture with industrial means. In practice this led to the same failure of other industrial produced hand pumps due to difficulty to maintain and find spare parts while numbers of pumps realized where a fraction of set targets.\r\n\r\nOn our website you will find many projects that are designed with a similar approach. Examples are, Hydraulic Rampumps, Furniture, Administration system, Sanitation, Transport, Engineering for the Bottom of the Pyramid work shops, etc. \r\n\r\nAgain Demotech sees it as its task to generate, field test and publish a design for a hand driven water pump that fulfills all criteria for rapid self-reliant and self-sustained application required for reaching Millennium Development Goals. Design targets are set higher then in 1975. Functional performance to be equal or better then existing hand pumps to depth of 70 meters. Cost within the reach of the extreme poor (<1$/p/day). Made with local materials and tools only, according to local craft practice. Self-explaining setup and construction limits need for training to demonstration and peer-to-peer spread of knowledge. \r\n\r\nBench marks of success will be immediate un-invited, un-subsidized copying of the water pump where demonstrated and needed. A bench mark that takes more time to set is development of income generation by manufacture and local selling of the rope pump. A third bench mark is the occurrence of change in life-style because of easier access to water. \r\n\r\nRe-design is Demotech's job. Demotech explores and puts to practice the possibilities of a different approach to development, which takes into account the social construction of technology and critically deals with the process of their innovation and implementation. Demotech treats people as creators of development and active collaborators in the process of shaping technology.\r\n\r\nAll the work that it takes to realize such bench marks describes best how our organization Demotech functions and performs: all but easy going!",
