In the next 25 years, one third of the planet’s population (2,7 billion people) will have to deal with serious water shortage. Our behaviour in The Netherlands has a big impact on water shortage elsewhere on the planet, something a lot of young people will not be aware of.\r\n\r\nThe Watercarriers for Africa are Erik Alblas (32), secondary school teacher of sociology, and Annemieke Plat (28), postwoman. Our goal is to point out the consequences of our consumptive behaviour on the scarcity of water on a global scale, especially to youngsters. On average we use 4000 litres of water a day per person, of which 95% is used in other parts of the world, producing the goods that we buy in our supermarkets. Often these places of production are the same parts of the world in which people are plagued by water scarcity.\r\n\r\nOur activities:\r\n-Starting September of 2012, we will get on our bicycles and cycle from Cape Town to Leiden; a voyage of 20.000 kilometres through some 20 countries. During our trip we will generate media-attention by writing about our experiences of (the effects of) water shortage in the places we come through, and about the shortage that we will undoubtedly experience ourselves, while cycling. We will also visit projects that are aimed at ameliorating access of clean water.\r\n-Various primary schools and colleges follow our progress as we go: we will interact with pupils via e-mail, Skype and films. Alongside, those pupils are provided with an educational programme about the use of water in The Netherlands and in Africa, and the relationship with their own patterns of consumption: what, in practical terms, can they do to reduce their use of water? School children aged 10-13 are sponsored by friends and family to walk 6 kilometres, while carrying 6 litres of water in a backpack. With two important results: kids learn about global water issues and raise funds to help solve them. Lectures by teachers and external guest on the importance of clean drinking water and proper sanitation ensure the educational nature of the event.\r\n\r\nThe experience helps kids understand what many children their age in developing countries must do every single day, often at the expense of being in school. It is a motivating and effective community event to engage the younger generation on an important topic and teach them that they can make a difference in the lives of others.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\nThe concept of Walking for Water was pioneered in the Netherlands by NGO Aqua for All, and has grown in popularity every year since it started 8 years ago. Results have been impressive — in 2010, 18.000 children from over 400 schools Walked for Water, raising €1.2 million for water projects around the world. Our program Coordinators have been exposed and their capacities continuously enhanced through capacity building courses including; Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Early Childhood Development, Guiding and Counseling, Leadership and Development, and financial management\r\n\r\nTYSA has many ways it which it finances its activities and programs. The community where we work has been mobilized to own the programs and therefore offer vital support including human resources, in kind donations and facilities to be used in the projects. TYSA has mobilized large base of local volunteers who give their time back to the community. TYSA has mobilized on line fundraising through Globalgiving, United (streetfootballworld) which supplement community efforts. Fundraising from corporate organizations and foundations also has supplemented community support.\r\n\r\n TYSA collaborates and Networks with several National, Regional and International organization in order to create synergy and experience sharing.
