"description": "The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Gambia is a non-governmental, non-sectarian, development-oriented organization established by the Gambia Mission Station of The Seventh-day Adventist Church for the specific purposes of community development, disaster relief and rehabilitation in The Gambia. ADRA Gambia belongs to a network of more than 130 supporting and implementing country offices world-wide. The ADRA network has its international headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland, USA. The agency has been in Gambia since May 1984 implementing projects in Education, Food security, Economic empowerment, and responding to emergencies. ADRA Gambia is duely registered with the NGOs Affairs Agency under the Office of the President.\n\nADRA Gambia’s work involves identifying communities with needs that are in consonance with its mandate, mobilizing donor funds for implementing projects to meet such needs, working cooperatively with beneficiary communities to achieve the desired goals, enabling and empowering partner communities to be responsible for improving their conditions, and bringing about lasting change.\n\nADRA Gambia’s work compliments government efforts. It cooperates and collaborates with a number of government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), as well as some sister non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Its activities, which are creative, innovative and needs-driven, address aspects of Government of The Gambia development plans.",

"description": "PROTOS aims at facilitating sustainable and empowering development processes that are well integrated in the local cultural and social context and that strive to improve the general well being of the destitute groups in the South. In that view, water is a key element. Given its expertise in this field, PROTOS particularly stands up for equitable, sustainable and participatory water management in the North and the South.\r\nEquitable water management assumes solidarity amongst all users, whereby each individual has the right to sufficient water quantities for a well-balanced human development.\r\nSustainable water management seeks to optimally use the available water sources without threatening the other users, the environment or the future.\r\nParticipatory water management requires the involvement of each individual and community, including disadvantaged groups, providing the opportunity for them to take control of their own future. In this, a fair gender balance has to be respected.\r\nPROTOS wants to achieve these objectives by:\r\n- Supporting participatory development programmes in the South: via an improvement of access to water, and of distribution and/or valorisation of water, PROTOS aims to improve the socio-economic situation of the local population.\r\n- Being a lever: by strengthening the capacities, the vision and the position of organisations that are able to capitalize on the knowledge fostered by these programmes and capable of making profit of this knowledge in the future.\r\n- Stimulating the cooperation between all parties involved in the planning and implementation of local development, including the civil society organisations and the local authorities.\r\n- Stimulating the debate on the equitable, sustainable and participatory water resources management in both the North and the South. The experiences of PROTOS and its partner organisations are able to contribute to this debate.",

"description": "CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance of members and partners which constitutes an influential network of organisations at the local, national, regional and international levels, and spans the spectrum of civil society. \r\n\r\nCIVICUS includes the following in its definition of civil society: civil society networks and organisations; trade unions; faith-based networks; professional associations; NGO capacity development organisations; philanthropic foundations and other funding bodies.\r\n\r\nCIVICUS has worked for nearly two decades to strengthen citizen action and civil society throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens' freedom of association are threatened. \r\n\r\nCIVICUS has a vision of a global community of active, engaged citizens committed to the creation of a more just and equitable world. This is based on the belief that the health of societies exists in direct proportion to the degree of balance between the state, the private sector and civil society.\r\n\r\nCIVICUS provides a focal point for knowledge-sharing, common interest representation, global institution-building and engagement among these disparate sectors. It acts as an advocate for citizen participation as an essential component of governance and democracy worldwide. \r\n\r\nCIVICUS seeks to amplify the voices and opinions of ordinary people and it gives expression to the enormous creative energy of the burgeoning sector of civil society.\r\nMission:\r\n\r\nCIVICUS is an international alliance dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the world.\r\nVision:\r\nA worldwide community of informed, inspired, committed citizens engaged in confronting the challenges facing humanity.\r\n\r\nCIVICUS seeks to amplify the voices and opinions of ordinary people. It recognises that for effective and sustainable civic participation to occur, citizens must enjoy rights of free association and be able to engage all sectors of society.\r\n\r\nValues:\r\n\r\nJustice and Equality - CIVICUS believes in the equality and dignity of every person, and that all people should be free to exercise their rights as citizens as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.\r\n\r\nReciprocity - CIVICUS exists to ensure that people treat one another with the respect with which they themselves wish to be treated. Civil society cannot thrive without mutual respect.\r\n\r\nKnowledge - CIVICUS recognises that to increase its global awareness of civil society and before it can assist or take action, it needs to form alliances with other concerned bodies to increase its influence and knowledge.\r\n\r\nVision- CIVICUS is realistic about conflict in today's world, but remains optimistic that most people, organisations, governments and businesses will work together for the benefit of all.\r\n\r\nPrincipled Courage - CIVICUS will always promote civil justice and pledges to act in a manner that honours the principles of democratic civil society.\r\n\r\nObjectives:\r\nThe three main objectives that inform our mission are:\r\nInfluence – to ensure that civil society is taken seriously and is able to have a stronger influence on the making of decisions that matter to people's lives;\r\nConnect – to connect the different sources and forces of citizen action so that citizen action as a whole becomes more robust and effective;\r\nEnable - to promote better conditions for civil society to do its work, and to enhance and protect optimal standards for all civil society.",

"description": "UDPK, a GDRL deployment site, is an umbrella organization for DPOs in Kenya.\r\nFrom January 2012 through March 2013, UDPK ran a project to support the implementation of Article 29 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which promotes the rights of people with disabilities to participate in public life, including the right to vote and to run for office.\r\n UDPK identified aspirants with disabilities who intended to run for various national, county, or nominative seats. They provided training on campaign and communication in readiness for general elections. This included a particular emphasis on assisting women with disabilities aspiring to run or be nominated for political office with special training and with linking them to other institutions..\r\nUDPK examined election-related policies, and met with political parties, to ensure they helped enhance the participation of people with disabilities. They took part in the elections observation process.\r\nKenya has at least 12 members of parliament and about 71 members of the various county assemblies in the country who are people with disabilities.",

School children aged 10-13 are sponsored by friends and family to walk 6 kilometres, while carrying 6 litres of water in a backpack. With two important results: kids learn about global water issues and raise funds to help solve them. Lectures by teachers and external guest on the importance of clean drinking water and proper sanitation ensure the educational nature of the event.\r\n\r\nThe experience helps kids understand what many children their age in developing countries must do every single day, often at the expense of being in school. It is a motivating and effective community event to engage the younger generation on an important topic and teach them that they can make a difference in the lives of others.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\nThe concept of Walking for Water was pioneered in the Netherlands by NGO Aqua for All, and has grown in popularity every year since it started 8 years ago. Results have been impressive — in 2010, 18.000 children from over 400 schools Walked for Water, raising €1.2 million for water projects around the world. Schools choose a project to fund with the money raised, and see the project unfold online.",

"description": "ELCI is a global membership organization, bringing together over 800 civil society organization (CSO) members from all the continents of the world. ELCI was conceived at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in 1972 in Stockholm (also known as The Stockholm Conference), Sweden, under the auspices of the United Nations. It brought States together in proclaiming that preservation of the environment is essential to the continued enjoyment of life itself. The Stockholm Conference proposed a specialized agency within the UN Secretariat to facilitate coordinated efforts among States towards protection of the environment. As a result, in 1973 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established by a resolution of the General Assembly, and its base established in Nairobi, Kenya.\r\n",
