"description": "Walking for Water is the International variant of the Dutch Wandelen voor Water campaign.\r\n\r\nWalking for Water is an awareness and fundraising initiative which takes place around World Water Day (22 March). School children aged 10-13 are sponsored by friends and family to walk 6 kilometres, while carrying 6 litres of water in a backpack. With two important results: kids learn about global water issues and raise funds to help solve them. Lectures by teachers and external guest on the importance of clean drinking water and proper sanitation ensure the educational nature of the event.\r\n\r\nThe experience helps kids understand what many children their age in developing countries must do every single day, often at the expense of being in school. It is a motivating and effective community event to engage the younger generation on an important topic and teach them that they can make a difference in the lives of others.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\nThe concept of Walking for Water was pioneered in the Netherlands by NGO Aqua for All, and has grown in popularity every year since it started 8 years ago. Results have been impressive — in 2010, 18.000 children from over 400 schools Walked for Water, raising €1.2 million for water projects around the world. Schools choose a project to fund with the money raised, and see the project unfold online.",

"description": "WaterAid worked in Kenya from the mid 1980s until the early 1990s. At that time it seemed the development indicators were very strong so it was decided WaterAid's efforts could be focused elsewhere. In 2008 WaterAid conducted a scoping study in Kenya and decided that, after ten years away from the country, there were compelling reasons to return. The study found that by establishing a presence in Kenya WaterAid could help to understand and tackle the water and sanitation situation.\r\n\r\nWaterAid's plans:\r\nIn the first instance, we will re-establish WaterAid’s presence in Kenya by registering, recruiting staff and setting up an office. This will then lead to a two year pilot phase, with the development of a programme of work based on a deeper sector analysis and thorough exploration of potential partnerships in Kenya. After the initial two year phase, a review will be conducted and a country strategy developed.",

"description": "WaterAid Mali works with a number of local partner organisations and NGOs.\r\n\r\nWaterAid started pilot projects in Mali in 2001 with the aim of increasing low-income communities' access to water, sanitation and hygiene. Since its establishment, WaterAid Mali has been working with a local NGO called Jigi in poor areas of the capital city Bamako, in areas including Nafadji Doumanzana where there was a complete lack of safe drinking water points for a population of approximately 6000.\r\nWaterAid's vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe domestic water and effective sanitation.\r\n\r\nWaterAid's core belief is that safe water and sanitation are basic human rights. Everyone in the world should have access to them.\r\n\r\nWe believe that access to safe water and sanitation underpins health, education and livelihoods, and forms the first, essential step in overcoming poverty.\r\n\r\nWaterAid's work in Mali and elsewhere is powered by collaboration. The engagement of all partners, donors, staff, volunteers and trustees underpins our success in realising our shared vision of a world in which everyone has access to safe water and effective sanitation.",

"description": "The project:\r\nOver 1 billion people, mainly on the African continent, do not have access to clean drinking water. In the next 25 years, one third of the planet’s population (2,7 billion people) will have to deal with serious water shortage. Our behaviour in The Netherlands has a big impact on water shortage elsewhere on the planet, something a lot of young people will not be aware of.\r\n\r\nThe Watercarriers for Africa are Erik Alblas (32), secondary school teacher of sociology, and Annemieke Plat (28), postwoman. Our goal is to point out the consequences of our consumptive behaviour on the scarcity of water on a global scale, especially to youngsters. On average we use 4000 litres of water a day per person, of which 95% is used in other parts of the world, producing the goods that we buy in our supermarkets. Often these places of production are the same parts of the world in which people are plagued by water scarcity.\r\n\r\nOur activities:\r\n-Starting September of 2012, we will get on our bicycles and cycle from Cape Town to Leiden; a voyage of 20.000 kilometres through some 20 countries. During our trip we will generate media-attention by writing about our experiences of (the effects of) water shortage in the places we come through, and about the shortage that we will undoubtedly experience ourselves, while cycling. We will also visit projects that are aimed at ameliorating access of clean water.\r\n-Various primary schools and colleges follow our progress as we go: we will interact with pupils via e-mail, Skype and films. Alongside, those pupils are provided with an educational programme about the use of water in The Netherlands and in Africa, and the relationship with their own patterns of consumption: what, in practical terms, can they do to reduce their use of water? Also we will generate contact between the Dutch pupils and their contemporaries in the countries we pass through.\r\n-With our trip we will collect for the financial support of local water projects.",

"description": "International network of women’s organisations:\r\nWomen for Water Partnership (WfWP) is an international network of women’s organisations in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and West- and Eastern Europe. The partnership consists of more than a million women - one of the Major Groups that are identified by the United Nations to shape a sustainable society. The women of WfWP come from different social cultural and professional backgrounds. They contribute to poverty reduction with their know-how and experience. \r\n\r\nIWRM:\r\nThe focus of the organisation is sustainable development through integrated water resource management. WfWP’s key concerns are empowerment, local ownership, equity mainstreaming, partnership, and grassroots development. \r\n\r\nDay-to-day practice:\r\nWfWP fills the gap between the local day-to-day practice in water management and the international agreed principles for sustainable development. The partnership links macro and micro level interventions and creates conditions that enable women and their organisations to become partners in the development of their own environment.\r\n\r\nDynamic networking:\r\nWfWP has its own working methodology: Dynamic Networking. It is tailor-made for sustainable solutions at grass roots level. Through the Dynamic Networking approach all stakeholders arrive at a shared needs perception and jointly develop the most appropriate solution. In the resulting project all parties involved work together on an equal footing contributing their specific expertise. \r\n\r\nConcrete project: \r\nEvery year WfWP members organise working conferences in different regions in the world. At those conferences initiatives of member organisations are developed into concrete projects. Relevant stakeholders are invited to participate in the joint development and subsequent implementation of these projects. The knowledge and experience about a.o. partnerships, appropriate technologies, micro finance, and up-scaling of successful initiatives are exchanged and put to practice. \r\n\r\n",
