"description": "Careermate is an educational trust setup to offer career guidance to youths in Zambia. The goal of Careermate is to usher more people into vocations or career fields generally considered as less prestigious but were employment or livelihood opportunities abound. E.g. Agriculture or Arts, Entertainment.\r\n\r\nOur target is young people in two transitional stages of our education system i.e. senior secondary school and vocational training, where progression to higher level education is severely limited.\r\n\r\nCareermate has three strategic programme components;\r\n\r\n1. Career guidance - this is concerned with developing career guidance materials and sharing them with youths. The unique feature of this component is the way it uses ICT to enhance the appeal of career information and making it more interactive and interesting to young people. Here we use videos, high quality graphics as well as interactive content to fully engage the youths. The content is characterized by inspirational interviews and documentation of tasks performed in a particular job.\r\n\r\n2. Sharing and Networking - the key feature of this component is activities to link youths to experts, knowledge and other leveraging initiatives. In this component we offer young people access to our digital library as well as conduct face-face career talks in training centers. During this time we share the career content we generate as well those our partners send us. Starting next year 2012, Careermate will embark on a programme to assist schools especially those with problems accessing Internet, to create more digital educational libraries of DVDs.\r\n\r\nAnother interesting feature of this component is the learning exchange. Here we are trying to facilitate learning exchange programmes with other youths within and outside the country.\r\n\r\n3. Talent Development ; this component is concerned with assisting youths with talents to further develop their talents by offering them basic tools, facilities to practice. For instance, we offer our members access to music instruments to learn how to use them, or coaching and validation/contests on public speaking.",

It is also a historical and the secondary capital of Montenegro (Prijestonica), with the official residence of the President of Montenegro. It is a town of immense historical heritage, founded in the 15th century. It became the center of Montenegrin life and a religious center. It is because of its heritage as a long-term Montenegrin capital that it is today the honorary capital of Montenegro. \r\nLocated at the foot of Lovcen mountain, far enough and hidden from enemy sight, yet close enough and open for all friendly hands is the city museum, old capital of Montenegro for centuries, and origin point of Montenegrin spirituality and statehood. Patina of past ages on faces of buildings contains messages form past times since its first days up to forming modern European capital.\r\n",

"description": "Close the Gap is an international not-for-profit organisation that actively helps to bridge the digital divide. The objective is to assist in improving local knowledge and putting local talent to use by offering cost-efficient IT-solutions to projects in developing countries.\r\n\r\nIn the industrialised world, computers are replaced every three to four years, meaning that companies are increasingly looking for sustainable ways to replace their used devices. At the same time, millions of computers are needed in developing countries.\r\n\r\nIt is here that Close the Gap creates win-win situations. By supplying developing countries with high-quality refurbished IT equipment that is donated by Western countries, Close the Gap creates practical, social and sustainable solutions that enable people to bring about a true change in their lives through the use of IT.\r\n\r\nSince its founding in 2003, Close the Gap has managed to reinstall tens of thousands of PCs donated by companies in Europe, offering local communities and individuals access to information. With the right tools, people in developing countries can significantly improve the quality of their lives. Access to communication technologies is predominantly vital in enabling them to reach this objective. Computers are used for a large variety of applications and have consequently become an essential part of the personal, educational and professional world. One tends to forget that one of the basic assets provided by computers is access to all kinds of information. Hence, the difference that access to information can make to a person’s life is immeasurable.\r\n\r\nWhen donations are made, Close the Gap’s logistic partner collects the IT equipment. It is then checked by professionals, repaired if needed and reconfigured before it is sent off to a designated project.\r\n\r\nClose the Gap is mostly active in Africa, but also in other developing countries in South-East Asia and South-America. The organisation mainly supports projects in the socio-educational sector, such as schools, universities, hospitals and other programmes focusing on the improvement of educational and information facilities.\r\n\r\nHowever diverse the projects may be, they all have one common denominator: to focus on advancing both the individual and the community within a spirit of social education.",

"description": "Concern Worldwide Liberia is an affiliate of Concern Worldwide and supports the Concern network by recruiting staff, supporting program development, creating public awareness of humanitarian issues and financially supporting programs.\r\n\r\nConcern Worldwide is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organization dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries. \r\n\r\nConcern Worldwide in Liberia—through its work in emergencies and long-term development—has saved countless lives, relieved suffering and provided opportunities for a better standard of living for the people of Liberia. \r\n\r\nConcern Worldwide first started working in Liberia in 1991, in response to Liberia’s civil conflict. Unfortunately due to the severity of the fighting Concern Worldwide was forced to leave in 1992, but returned again in 1996, continuing to support emergency programmes in Liberia throughout the subsequent conflict and to the present day. During the conflict, Concern Worldwide implemented emergency programmes distributing NFIs in IDP Camps, as well as livelihoods and emergency environmental health, focusing on clean water, sanitation and hygienic practices. \r\n\r\nToday, Concern Worldwide is implementing in three counties five-year thematic programme strategies, delivering comprehensive programmes in Grand Bassa, Lofa and Montserrado counties, in the areas of:\r\n\r\nEnvironmental Health (WASH) – focusing on access to safe water and sanitation facilities (e.g. through latrine and water point construction/rehabilitation) and health and hygiene promotion.\r\n\r\nEducation – focusing on primary education, increasing access to and quality of education, as well as protection and governance within the sector.\r\n\r\nLivelihoods – focusing on increasing food security (particularly through increased and diversified agricultural production), income generation activities and adult literacy.\r\n\r\nHIV and AIDS – focusing on providing care, treatment, support, and livelihoods opportunities to people living with and/or affected by HIV and AIDS.\r\n",

"description": "The organisation:\r\nVia local partners Connect International (CI) supports local communities to develop themselves. To reach this, innovative information systems and technologies are used. These so called Smart tecs are simple and affordable water- and sanitation solutions that in general can be produced locally.\r\nThe keyword is reparability, users are able to the maintenance themselves and spareparts are affordable and available. A Smart tec example is the rope pump, an innovative low cost handpump now used by 3 million people. Others examples are Rota sludge and Baptist well drilling, Tube groundwater recharge, Easy drip irrigation, Siphon water filters and VIP latrines.\r\n\r\nThe partnership: \r\nConnect International supports Akvo with examples of good practices but also informs on failures, this because experiences indicate, “Simple is not easy”. A successful introduction of a simple technology requires, professional guidance. Learning from the past and combining the experiences of the Akvo partners, cost of water and sanitation can be reduced and sustainability increased.",

"description": "Imagine homeless children, parents who cannot afford to pay school fees, or an orphan who is the only caretaker of his or her siblings. Poverty and conflict have a disastrous effect on a child’s healthy development.\r\n\r\nEveryone agrees that a caring home for every child is something we all want. The same goes for finding foster families for those children who might otherwise be left homeless, or providing family coaches to support the families of children with disabilities. And finally, everyone wants to be able to provide families that are living in extreme poverty with financial support to prevent their children from having to work at a young age.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, all children are entitled to adequate education that is provided by qualified teachers and an involved government, with parents’ committees that stimulate their sons and daughters to go to school.\r\n\r\nA comprehensive approach is needed to enable all children of each family to go to school. Such an approach not only has to stimulate all parties involved to tackle the issue, including public authorities, parents, students and teachers, but also has to reward the achievement of good results.",

They are also the ones who will have to leave behind their homes, jobs and farmland when fleeing from acts of war. Often they do not have anything or anyone to fall back on.\r\n\r\nDisasters affect structural development, destroying investments of years. This means that the most effective disaster response demands synergy between disaster risk reduction and humanitarian aid. Using our 100 years of experience, Cordaid connects emergency aid with sustainable development.\r\n\r\nWe work with communities and organisations to reduce the impact of disasters and be prepared when disasters do strike.\r\n\r\nCordaid is able to offer immediate help in the most remote areas of the world through our extensive network of partners.\r\n\r\nTogether with local communities and organisations, Cordaid works toward reducing the impacy of disasters.",

"description": "Poverty and inequality cause tensions; it is the lack of prospects that creates conflicts. Earning a living wage allows people to regain control of their lives, to care for their families and to shape their futures. As a result, people will start working together and their communities will flourish.\r\n\r\nPeople living in fragile areas require capital to start their own business. If there are any financial institutions at all, they often are new to the business or inexperienced and lack the knowledge to reach many of their customers. Such institutions require support to grow but cannot find the investors that are prepared to take risks.\r\n\r\nIt requires expertise of conflict transformation, financial expertise as well as an insight into local circumstances to invest responsibly in financial institutions in fragile areas. The more fragile an area, the more an international development organization has to be prepared to bear risks, including financial risks.\r\n\r\nCordaid invests in a lasting peace. It does so by supporting microfinance institutions, entrepreneurs and companies, with expertise, advice and financial resources.\r\n\r\nCordaid offers clear investment policies and consideration for risk management as well as its own investment capital, but above all, Cordaid has compassion.",

However, resources are often more of a curse: they are at the root of severe environmental damage, violations of human rights, conflicts, and poverty.\r\n\r\nDeveloping countries that possess natural resources are the stage for power struggles between multinational corporations and governments. And the stakes are only increasing as the prices are rising and shortages occur. People often do not have sufficient powers to protect their own interests. This has to change and it can be changed.\r\n\r\nIt is about time that communities benefit from the resources their land provides. "description": "Food is a basic necessity of life. Yet more than 800 million people in developing countries aren’t getting enough of it. Small-scale farmers are the people that drive the development of regions that are torn by war and conflicts. They ensure that communities have enough to eat, they serve as employers and they bring together people who previously didn’t trust one another.\r\n\r\nWhen farmers work together they always provide a fresh basis for peaceful development. By working together they have more impact in boosting production. They are also better placed to speak from a position of strength when negotiating with their governments for improved services, infrastructure, access to water when it’s in short supply, grazing land and clearer land rights.\r\n\r\nCordaid helps create the right preconditions for small-scale farmers. By offering the required technological knowhow and training, for example. By giving them more insight into the market and improving their access to it. And by strengthening the position of farmers in their region and country.\r\n\r\nCordaid contributes to food security and works on reducing the number of conflicts. In this way Cordaid is creating the opportunities for communities to flourish.\r\n",

"description": "Between today and 2015, 700,000 mothers will not survive delivering their children unless the available healthcare improves. The rate of maternal mortality is disturbingly high, particularly in fragile countries such as the Central African Republic, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Corruption and a failing administration continually impair healthcare in these countries.\r\n\r\nThe time has come to make healthcare accessible to all people regardless of whether they live in rich or poor areas. The approach used tightens controls and enables patients to take part in deciding their own treatment. In addition, staff remuneration has been made dependent on the achieved results in order to motivate staff to go the extra mile. An approach is called for that not only limits patient contribution to healthcare but also improves its accessibility.\r\n\r\nAll in all, it is time for change. Healthy women are the pillars of both their families and of society. Not only should they be informed how to stay healthy, but also that it is their right to do so; healthcare must be accessible to them. Medical supervision both before and during their pregnancy is crucial. Cordaid works on improving this for all women.\r\n\r\nCordaid aims at providing affordable and accessible healthcare to all, which it has done for many years. Its approach -- using the most recent developments and finance methods -- is followed throughout the world.",

"description": "Capital is required by entrepreneurs, farmers, developers of housing projects, and health clinics to invest in their businesses. They also need savings accounts and insurances to cover setbacks. However, entrepreneurs in poor countries often do not have access to these facilities. Institutions and funds that provide microfinance in circumstances where banks do not operate can offer a solution to those entrepreneurs.\r\n\r\nCordaid invests in microfinance institutions and funds that offer loans, guarantees and capital stock to people and businesses that have no other options. We do so in regions that involve a greater risk than other investors are willing to take.\r\n\r\nSuch investments require financial expertise as well as the best possible knowledge of the actual, local circumstances. To acquire such knowledge, Cordaid conducts thorough risk analyses and studies. It also offers tailor-made investments that fit the capacity and needs of the institutions and funds that provide microfinance. And, finally, it strives for insight into the microfinance organizations’ business plans and their client protection principles.\r\n\r\nCordaid has been investing in cost-effective entrepreneurship for over 16 years. Its capital amounts to 70 million euros, which has been invested in over 100 microfinance organizations in 12 countries.",
