"description": "Established in 1972 to assist with relief and rehabilitation of greater Rangpur-Dinajpur immediately following the War of Independence, the RDRS programme evolved into a sectoral then comprehensive effort. Formerly the Bangladesh field programme of the Geneva-based Lutheran World Service, RDRS became an autonomous national NGO in 1997. RDRS however maintains strong international connections. With LWF (as an Associate Programme); with ACT International; with its core partner agencies mainly in Europe, North America and Japan; and with regional networks such as AZEECON, SAGA and others.\r\n\r\nRDRS came into being at the time of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, in 1971. Set up by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) to help refugees fleeing conflict across the border, it returned with them after liberation to carry out much-needed rehabilitation in the devastated and long-neglected northwest – greater Rangpur - Dinajpur Districts. In 1976, a sectoral development programme was launched to assist the poorest in agriculture, community development, health and women’s economic activities. Construction of roads, bridges, markets and schools continued.\r\nDuring these years, RDRS was the leading non-governmental agency in the northwest. It is also credited with introducing many major innovations: the treadle pump (its most famous invention, allowing crops to be grown in winter); wheat production and other crop diversification; vegetable gardens; and, women’s advancement, not least the picture of women on bicycles.\r\nBy the late 1980s, an integrated Comprehensive programme superseded its sectoral work, focused on conscientisation and group organization of the poor, emphasizing social, educational and economic elements. Physical infrastructure development continued under the Rural Works Project. \r\nSince then, RDRS successes have included the ‘greening the north’ through its roadside and homestead tree plantation programme; improving life on the chars (river islands on the Brahmaputra); raising awareness of women’s rights; promoting savings, credit and skills training to improve the livelihoods of the poor and, the emergence of Union Federations - self-managed people’s organisations of the rural poor. \r\nThe RDRS programme continues to evolve and innovate. Current realities mean the programme now comprises a range of various projects and financing, large and small, which all contribute to following vision and mission.\r\n\r\nVision \r\n\r\nThe achievement by the rural poor of meaningful political, social, and economic empowerment, peace and justice and a sustainable environment through their individual and collective effort.\r\n\r\nMission \r\n\r\nRDRS works with the rural poor & their organization \r\n• Build their capacity and confidence\r\n• Claim and establish their rights\r\n• Promote good governance\r\n• Improve access to resources and services \r\n\r\n",

"description": "Established in 1979, the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) is involved in various social development programmes aimed at helping the rural communities living around Tata Steel's operational units.\n\nPrior to the setting up of TSRDS, Tata Steel's community initiatives were conducted through its rural and community services division. However, the fundamental differences between the imperatives of rural and urban development prompted the company to reclassify its community initiatives programmes under three units: Community Development and Social Welfare, TSRDS and Adivasi and Harijan Welfare Cell, now known as the Tribal Cultural Society.\n\nTSRDS covered 32 villages around Jamshedpur (in the state of Jharkhand in eastern India) in its first year of operation. Today, the Society has seven separate units, six in Tata Steel's operational areas, and covers 600 villages in the states of Jharkhand and Orissa (also in eastern India). TSRDS is actively involved in the spheres of livelihood generation, health and hygiene, and people empowerment.\n\nTSRDS has expanded its agenda and identified the advancement of education, sports and self-reliance as tools to ensure a better quality of life for the people it works with.",

With the right political will, resources and drive \r\nwe believe that our vision is achievable. Yet 4,000 children die every day because they do not have access to safe water or sanitation. In West Africa, Tree Aid supports projects in Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, and Niger. \r\nIts West Africa office is located in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and its programme of work focuses on four areas: \r\n(i) agroforestry and natural resources management (NRM); \r\n(ii) forest governance; \r\n(iii) enterprise development and trade; and \r\n(iv) food security and nutrition. \r\nTree Aid’s work on NRM includes subcatchment NRM management. In Ghana, for instance, it has supported water buffering and restoration of riverbank under the framework of the Bongo River Trees Project. \r\nAs part of Tree Aid’s approach to delivering long term, sustainable impact, it works closely with policy makers, governments, and local authorities. \r\nTree Aid will be leading WP 1 (subcatchment‐level NRM) with the support of the Burkina Faso National Agency for Integrated Water and Resources Management and WP 8 (policy analysis & influencing) in collaboration with the other DRYDEV Burkina Faso partners and ICRAF.",

"description": "Established in 1989, ADEMO was the first DPO in Mozambique with around 80,000 members spread throughout the country’s 11 provinces. But ADEMO suffers – as do so many developing world DPOs – from scarce resources, which is why DDP partnered ADEMO in the Disability and Development Programme (DADP), in which the central element was to develop ADEMO’s capacity to represent disabled people throughout Mozambique.\n\nRecognised as the ‘voice’ of disabled people in Mozambique, ADEMO have made links with a range of government ministries, such as Health, Women and Social Affairs, Labour and Education, which consult ADEMO on provisions for disabled people when drafting new policies.\n\nDDP and ADEMO continue to work together to develop sustainable programmes such as income generation at the provincial level and to address the issue of the exclusion of disabled people from HIV/AIDS policies and programmes in Mozambique, where HIV prevalence is high.\n\nAt the same time, ADEMO and DDP know that the most effective means of securing the inclusion of disabled people as full and equal citizens will be through advocacy (lobbying and campaigning) and so the programmes we run together will continue to include training and resources to strengthen ADEMO’s skills in this area.",

"description": "ETC Urban Agriculture (ETC-UA) is the advisory group and resource centre working in the field of urban agriculture and food security since 1992. Its mission is to improve capacities of local authorities, NGOs and CBOs, governmental organisations and other stakeholders regarding urban agriculture.\r\n\r\nIncreasingly people live in cities, and urban poverty and urban food insecurity are rapidly rising. Growing food, herbs and medicinal plants, and raising animals in vacant open spaces in and around the cities, provides the urban poor with nutritious food and an important source of income. Urban farming also contributes to other urban issues such as social inclusion, urban water management, recycling of urban wastes, urban greening, recreation and ecological education.\r\n\r\nThe staff of ETC Urban Agriculture consists of experienced professionals of various disciplines, programme assistants, as well as a unit secretary and financial officer. This team is assisted on demand by specialists involved in other ETC units. ETC Urban Agriculture advisors have long term experience in various aspects of sustainable agricultural development in both the urban and rural context in a large number of countries.\r\n\r\nExpertise & Services\r\n\r\nETC-Urban Agriculture organises its team and work around the following main themes:\r\n\r\n1. Urban agriculture, poverty alleviation and local economic development.\r\n\r\nUrban agriculture can play an important role as a complementary strategy for poverty alleviation, social inclusion and local economic development. ETC-UA supports the transition from subsistence to market oriented farming by assisting in technology development, improved farm management, strengthening of farmers organisations, supporting micro-enterprises involved in production of compost and other inputs, as well as in food processing, market analysis and development of direct producer-consumer linkages, etcetera. Special attention is given to women and unemployed youth.\r\n\r\n2. Urban agriculture, food security and nutrition.\r\n\r\nUrban agriculture can make important contributions to improvement of food security and nutrition of the urban poor by production for (home) consumption and local exchange or sales of surpluses which substantially enhances access of poor urban families to fresh foods at reasonable prices and reduces food costs allowing to save income for other essentials (medicines, school fees).\r\nETA-UA assists in designing strategies to enhance security of land use, introduction of low cost micro-farming technologies and nutritional education. Special attention is given to disadvantaged groups and families affected by HIV-Aids.\r\n\r\n3. Reuse of urban organic wastes and waste water in urban agriculture\r\n\r\nReuse of urban organic wastes and wastewater in agriculture under proper management, converts wastes into valuable resources (nutrients and water) for farmers, while reducing negative impact on health and environment. ETC-UA supports this by documenting and dissemination of best practices, by assisting in the set up of household and community based waste collection and compost production units, and by assisting in the design and implementation of municipal strategies that reduce the health and environmental risks associated with reuse of wastewater while enhancing its socio-economic benefits.\r\n\r\n4. Integration of urban agriculture in urban planning and design\r\n\r\nIntegration of agriculture in the urban planning system is an important precondition for the development of sustainable and safe urban agriculture for income and food as well as for urban greening, micro-climate regulation, landscape and biodiversity management, creation of buffer zones and land reserves, water management and recreational options for the citizens (agro-tourism). ETC-UA supports inclusion of urban agriculture in urban land use planning and the design of new neighbourhoods or slum development projects. Promotion of multi-functional land use is often an important focus.",
