"description": "The ‘Arthavida Foundation’, inaugurated on 1st of July 2011, is an organisation solely dedicated towards alleviating poverty and empowering the poor in Sri Lanka through micro-finance activities.\r\n\r\nThe roots of Arthavida can be traced to its sister organisation ‘Arthacharya Foundation’, which was established in 1992. ‘Arthacharya’, a Sanskrit term referring to ‘economic behavior’, amply defines the activities of the Foundation which seeks to uplift the economic behavior and life quality of the poor. Up till 2011, Arthacharya’s activities mainly revolved around two core areas, namely non-micro finance and micro-finance activities. The non-micro finance activities, consisting of aspects such as participatory waste management, water supply, sanitation and nutrition programmes, were based on grants received from various credit sources worldwide, with no repayment conditions attached. Facilitation for micro-finance activities were also funded from similar sources, but were received as loans which required repayment at concessionary interest rates.",

"description": "The Village Education Resource Center (VERC) was established in 1977 as a project of Save the Children-USA with funding from UNICEF. In 1981 it was indigenized as a Private Voluntary Development Organization (PVDO). VERC was designed to fill the void of in-country capacity building support to government and related community and rural development agencies. Its initial activities included communication, education, training material development, imparting training, conduct participatory action research and technology promotion.\r\nVERC’s field program evolved out of its need for an environment to apply its innovations in participatory development. VERC also worked to undertake capacity building activities of the rural poor, beginning with women’s literacy, health and sanitation and human resource development.\r\nRight from the beginning, it was however obvious that VERC’s main forte was its training services. Its commitment to quality materials, content and trainers quickly led to its recognition as a leading organization in this field. Its variety of development education, management, sectoral and skill training courses have reached almost around 417680 people to March 2012.\r\nVision : A self-reliant society based on justice, equity and sustainability, where every human being has the equal opportunity to maximize their potentials.\r\nIn all its work, VERC is committed to the principle of “self-actualization” a process of raising people’s consciousness to a level at which they can realize their potentials and are motivated to reorder their lives. \r\nPROGRAMS\r\nEntering its 36th year of operation, VERC’s activities have both grown and diversified as to include:\r\nField level\r\n\r\n Institution Building & Income Generation\r\n Water, Sanitation Hygiene Promotion, Arsenic Mitigation & Technology \r\n Development\r\n Education\r\n Health – Preventive and Clinical support on maternal and child health \r\n care\r\n Environmental Protection\r\n Assisting the GOB in promoting good governance in the country \r\n Disaster Preparedness and Management\r\n Integrating Disability Issues in Community Development\r\n\r\nSupport Services \r\n Training & Communication\r\n Research, Monitoring, Evaluation & Documentation\r\n Capacity Building ofs Local Organisations and Strengthening of Local \r\n Government \r\nAbout eighty percent of VERC's services are aimed at the interest of the poor women and children. In many of its human development efforts, VERC’s success has been encouraging, though along with its share of ups VERC has had to endure its share of downs as well. It is in the face of adversity that VERC has learnt many of its most valuable lessons. A long-term strategic framework has been developed by which VERC hopes to maximize sustainability of its development efforts.\r\n",

"description": "At least 265 Organisations, Churches, Mosques, Schools and other Community Groups take part in the trainings by Kitale AIDS Programme. Whilst in some areas these organisations group themselves as registered Community Based Organisations (CBO's) elsewhere they take up the responsibilities for their community volunteers individually. Although very different in character all organisations share in the task of mainstreaming HIV/AIDS and its related issues in their respective communities. Whilst doing so they make many contributions in kind such as provision of free venues, no rent for office space, totally voluntary educational activities (sessions, theatre performances, club work etc), help for sick and needy people, greatly reduced food expenses and sometimes even payment for own food. Translated into monetary terms this accounts to at least 8.400 Euro per year. If the now completely voluntary efforts of 1.230 active community volunteers would be paid at the common rate of 15 Euro per month this would translate into an additional 221.400 Euro per year!",

In our work we stress the interlinkage between governance, democracy, gender equality and women’s rights. \r\n\r\nOur programs and activities are designed from a rights based perspective. We aim at increasing accountability of duty bearers through advocating and building capacity for participatory policy monitoring; as well as setting up accountability mechanisms with other civil society groups. \r\nAt the same time we work on building voice of the rights holders, through capacity building and public awareness; and strengthening civil society in Suriname. By creating spaces for dialogue we bring right holders and duty bearers together- different stakeholders building towards a common agenda at a common table, through processes of dialogue, capacity building and advocacy.\r\nThe specific strategy we employ translates into our engagement in almost all sectors and thematic areas concerning all aspects of human rights and sustainable development. Our thematic engagements also depend on our partners need for our assistance.\r\nProjekta also serves as main coordinator of NGO networks in Suriname, recognized by both national government agencies, and international community as primary contact and source of information for engagement with NGO’s and civil society.",
