"description": "The NSWP was established as an informal alliance in 1990 by a group of sex worker rights activists working within sex work projects around the world. Over the years, NSWP has conducted activities in partnership with other organisations, and the principle of the participation of sex workers in policy and programme development has been accepted at many levels. Despite lacking resources and recognition, the NSWP has influenced policy and built leadership among sex workers and facilitated the development of regional and national networks of sex workers and sex work projects. Significantly, NSWP participation in the global response to HIV/AIDS was largely responsible for the term 'sex worker' replacing 'prostitute'. More than mere political correctness, this shift in language had the important effect of moving global understandings of sex work toward a labour framework which signposts solutions to many of the problems faced by sex workers. It also questions the stigma of sex work and represents greater recognition of sex workers as rights bearers, with the capacity to make a difference. As a result of NSWP advocacy, female, male and transgender sex workers have presented the case for protection of their human rights at international forums such as international and regional conferences on AIDS, the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing 1995, UNGASS, the UNAIDS Programme Co-ordinating Board and the Global Fund consultations. The NSWP successfully lobbied for wording of the UN convention against trafficking in persons (the Palermo Protocol) to ensure that trafficking is defined as including force or coercion. NSWP, along with its regional networks, was also successful in urging UNAIDS to reconsider its 2007 policy guidelines on HIV and sex work.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the NSWP, through its member organisations, published Making Sex Work Safe and a regular journal (Research for Sex Work); maintains global and regional listservs; and manages a website containing some of the most influential and important work on HIV and sex work. The NSWP’s work has been widely acknowledged and NSWP regional networks and members have received various awards.\r\n\r\nFollowing an organisational review completed in 2007, which recommended the NSWP formalise its membership structure, becoming a network of organisations (rather than individuals) and establishing a secretariat in the global north, the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP) registered as a not-for-profit private company limited by guarantee, with its registered office in Scotland, in October 2008.\r\n\r\nThe Global Network of Sex Work Projects exists to uphold the voice of sex workers globally and connect regional networks advocating for the rights of female, male and transgender sex workers. It advocates for rights based health and social services, freedom from abuse and discrimination, and self determination for sex workers. \r\n\r\nNSWP members are united by common core beliefs and values and are committed to: \r\n- Acceptance of sex work as work\r\n- Opposition to all forms of criminalisation of sex work (including sex workers, clients, management and others related to sex workers)\r\n- Support for self-organisation and self-determination of sex workers\r\n\r\nNSWP is led by sex workers; member organisations are therefore expected to be sex worker-led and to ensure the meaningful participation of sex workers in every level of their organisation. Regions are expected to ensure the voices of female, male and transgender sex workers are heard within their region as well as giving voice to sex workers living with HIV and those using drugs. \r\n\r\nAdditionally all members must be committed to challenging stigma and discrimination, to defending human rights, to challenging policies and practices that negatively affect the lives and health of sex workers, and to promoting rights based services and policies. \r\n \r\nThe NSWP aims are to:\r\n- provide practical information and opportunities for information sharing among organisations and projects which provide services to men, women, and transsexuals who work in the sex industry.\r\n- raise awareness of the health and welfare needs of sex workers. \r\n- advocate at regional and global level for policies and action, which further the human rights of sex workers. These rights include the right to health and a safe working environment free from abuse, violence, and discrimination. \r\n- develop and maintain links between service providers, sex worker organisations and relevant international institutions and agencies. \r\n- facilitate opportunities for the voices of sex workers to be heard in relevant international forums. \r\n\r\nThe NSWP conducts a mix of pro-active and re-active policy advocacy to support human rights and evidence based approaches to female, male and transgendered sex workers and strengthening sex worker communities. The work is arranged around: \r\na) Communications and advocacy. Information relevant to sex workers human rights and health is not sufficiently accessible, particularly for those who do not read English. The NSWP summarises, translates and distributes relevant information to it members and beyond. This is particularly important for places where there are no organised sex workers groups or rights based sex work programmes. Five languages have currently been prioritised - Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. NSWP advocacy is supported by policy analysis, research and consultation with members. \r\nb) Building Capacity and Solidarity - Training and skills building for and among sex worker organisations and leaders is achieved by developing and providing tools, training, space and support on issues such as human rights, health interventions, law and policy, ethics and technologies.",

Indian NGOs: BISWA (Orissa), IIRD (Rajasthan), ESAF (Maharashtra), SAMBHAV (Madhya Pradesh), Bharathi (Tamil Nadu), RDO Trust (Tamil Nadu) and Dutch NGO WASTE are joining hands with insurance organizations like TATA-AIG (India) and\r\nfinancial institutions like SNS-REAAL (Netherlands), NHB (India), NABARD (India) etc., to attempt to mobilize funds from end-user households to build 1 million sanitation systems. Since toilets do not generate income directly, there is a reluctance to invest in them. Therefore, innovative micro-credit and financial schemes that combine loans with micro-insurance packages are being tried out to mobilize household investment towards toilets. \r\n\r\nFINISH is a public-private partnership project aimed at setting up 1 million sustainable sanitation systems in India. \r\n\r\nFor more information on FINISH please contact programme director: SA Bhave at\r\nsadanand8bhave@yahoo.co.in",

"description": "Established in 1972 to assist with relief and rehabilitation of greater Rangpur-Dinajpur immediately following the War of Independence, the RDRS programme evolved into a sectoral then comprehensive effort. Formerly the Bangladesh field programme of the Geneva-based Lutheran World Service, RDRS became an autonomous national NGO in 1997. RDRS however maintains strong international connections. With LWF (as an Associate Programme); with ACT International; with its core partner agencies mainly in Europe, North America and Japan; and with regional networks such as AZEECON, SAGA and others.\r\n\r\nRDRS came into being at the time of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, in 1971. Set up by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) to help refugees fleeing conflict across the border, it returned with them after liberation to carry out much-needed rehabilitation in the devastated and long-neglected northwest – greater Rangpur - Dinajpur Districts. In 1976, a sectoral development programme was launched to assist the poorest in agriculture, community development, health and women’s economic activities. Construction of roads, bridges, markets and schools continued.\r\nDuring these years, RDRS was the leading non-governmental agency in the northwest. It is also credited with introducing many major innovations: the treadle pump (its most famous invention, allowing crops to be grown in winter); wheat production and other crop diversification; vegetable gardens; and, women’s advancement, not least the picture of women on bicycles.\r\nBy the late 1980s, an integrated Comprehensive programme superseded its sectoral work, focused on conscientisation and group organization of the poor, emphasizing social, educational and economic elements. Physical infrastructure development continued under the Rural Works Project. \r\nSince then, RDRS successes have included the ‘greening the north’ through its roadside and homestead tree plantation programme; improving life on the chars (river islands on the Brahmaputra); raising awareness of women’s rights; promoting savings, credit and skills training to improve the livelihoods of the poor and, the emergence of Union Federations - self-managed people’s organisations of the rural poor. \r\nThe RDRS programme continues to evolve and innovate. Current realities mean the programme now comprises a range of various projects and financing, large and small, which all contribute to following vision and mission.\r\n\r\nVision \r\n\r\nThe achievement by the rural poor of meaningful political, social, and economic empowerment, peace and justice and a sustainable environment through their individual and collective effort.\r\n\r\nMission \r\n\r\nRDRS works with the rural poor & their organization \r\n• Build their capacity and confidence\r\n• Claim and establish their rights\r\n• Promote good governance\r\n• Improve access to resources and services \r\n\r\n",

"description": "SANA is a registered NGO in Kenya established from the former Rural Domestic Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (RDWSSP), a bilateral programme between the Government of Kenya (GoK) and the Government of the Netherlands (GoN), which ran between 1983 and 2001.\r\n\r\nSANA was developed to encourage water and sanitation development in Nyanza region.\r\n\r\nThe former programme, RDWSSP reached out to 3,000 communities and facilitated the installation of 16,400 latrines and 1,500 water points in all districts of Nyanza Province. (See map on the right). SANA has prepared a 5 year plan to implement a further 1,000 water points and 10,000 sand units\r\n\r\nDistricts covered by SANA in Nyanza Province\r\nInterest in the sector has been growing over the years through campaigns both nationally and internationally leading to formulation of Vision 21, PHAST and the emergence of the new water policy in Kenya, Sessional Paper No. 1 (1999) on Water Resources Development and Management.\r\nThe immediate stakeholders in the former RDWSSP garnered support and established SANA, which was registered in October 2000. Since then efforts towards positioning SANA within the water and sanitation sector have attracted considerable attention from patner stakeholders, including the local community and leaders from Districts in the Province.",

The women wanted to address the numerous issues of drought, migration, water and fodder shortage, falling productivity in their traditional occupations of agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries and later the loss of resources and land to industrialization. Therefore, Sahjeevan, from its inception developed a strong gender perspective on natural resources. Our professionals also learnt and developed pedagogy of learning from and respecting traditional wisdom.",

"description": "SANNAM is a network of nurses and midwives of the SADC region, which was formed in 2002. This was as a result of deliberations that took place at a satellite meeting preceding the International Aids Conference in Durban in 2000. National Nurses Associations had in their own countries been working on improving the conditions for nurses, however in the absence of mechanisms to share best practices; they had been left to re invent the wheel.\r\nNurses and midwives of the region realized that they have to join hands in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic that was and is still hitting the SADC region hard. Thus this network was formed. SANNAM has made tremendous strides towards strengthening NNAs/NNOs (National Nursing Associations/Organisations) through capacity building, networking and sharing of best practices. Its 15 member NNOs/NNAs currently represent over 200,000 Nurses and Midwives. \r\n\r\nThis regional structure is registered in terms of the Non-profit Organizations Act of 1997 in South Africa and coordinates all projects from its Secretariat established at 605 Church Street (DENOSA Headquarters), Pretoria 0001, South Africa. \r\n\r\nThe Secretariat is led by an Executive Director, supported by a qualified Finance Officer and an Administrative Secretary and overseen by an Executive Committee of five members, who are presidents of member NNAs/NNOs. The secretariat ensures the effective implementation and management of regional projects through coordinating meetings, contracting services effectively, and monitoring and evaluation. It also serves to strengthen the network and ensure that programmes are integrated through sharing information and consolidating the organisation. \r\nThe Secretariat is managed in agreement with labour regulations of the host country (South Africa) and collaborates with SADC Secretariat Health Sector and HIV/AIDS Unit for regional concerns and partnership in some projects. Member NNAs/NNOs are legal entities registered in their countries. The organization has initiated negotiations with the SADC secretariat for long –term sustainability.\r\n\r\nSANNAM collaborate with other regional and international organizations such as: CIDA through CNA, ICN, WHO – Afro, ILO, UNAIDS, EQUINET, Universities…and is member of the GHWA.\r\n\r\nSANNAM has received support from CORDAID since 2009 to implement a 2 year project that aimed at improving the working conditions of Nurses and Midwives in the region through strengthening the lobbying and advocating capacity of NNAs/NNOs. The results of this project inspired the need to further enhance advocacy capacity of Nursing and Midwifery leaders at national and peripheral level for effective involvement in decision making and influencing health policies.\r\n\r\nSANNAM vision is: Improved regional health services through strengthening National Nurses Associations/Organisations (NNAs/NNOs); its activities focus on: networking, capacity building, experiences sharing, twinning partnership, lobby and advocacy, research (not well developed) and support to members (e.g coaching and solidarity interventions).",

"description": "For almost 100 years we have been working for equality and the human rights of women and girls to water and sanitation. We do this together with partners in 10 African and Asian countries. Our goal is a world in which all women and girls can exercise their right to water and sanitation, resulting in a healthier and more just society. \r\n\r\nIn a rapidly changing world grappling with major crises in the areas of climate, health and human rights, Simavi focuses on three areas where we believe we can achieve the greatest impact with our projects, lobbying and campaigns: equality, climate and power. \r\n\r\nWe want to increase the involvement and leadership of women in water and sanitation. We believe that women's and girls' access to climate-resilient water and sanitation is at the heart of climate justice. We are also convinced that women's voices and expertise are crucial for change when it comes to water and sanitation. \r\n\r\nOur work is part of the Sustainable Development Goals and Simavi focuses specifically on three interconnected SDGs: water and sanitation (SDG6); gender equality (SDG5) and climate (SDG13).
