The organization was founded to help address the evidence gap in off-grid water systems as to what was working, what wasn’t and why. Today Safe Water Network works with the private and public sector to overcome the obstacles to local sustainability and scale. They empower communities, work with national, regional and local government authorities in India and Ghana, as well as partner with NGOs and private sector foundations and companies. With offices in Accra, New Delhi and New York, Safe Water Network oversees field initiatives to develop and refine models that can be taken to scale. They also foster best practice through publications, workshops and other events. Some of their partners include: Merck & Co, PepsiCo Foundation, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and Newman's Own Foundation.",

"description": "Dalit is a Bengali word, stands for “oppressed”. Many also decode Dalit as untouchable. Dalit people have not been socially included in mainstream due to their so called “impure” profession e.g. skinning, tanning, shoe polishing, sweeping, sewerage cleaning, burying of dead bodies, saloon, drum beating, washing, etc. Literacy rate among the Dalits is about 25% which is far behind from the national average.\r\n\r\n“Dalit” to “DALIT” as an Organization\r\nThe organization has been named “DALIT” to represent the Dalit and indigenous community people. DALIT got registration from NGO Affairs Bureau (N.1374) in 1999. Some Dalit people were the visionary-dreamers of DALIT and autobiography of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar was their immense inspiration. DALIT approaches to the Dalit community with employment opportunities, health and education facilities. Actually DALIT is a one of the non profit organization, working for empowerment of socially excluded groups to lend a hand them to meet up their basic needs. Human resource development and exploring potentiality of the Dalit indigenous community people are the ultimate goal and objective of the organization. DALIT started its Water, Sanitation, Arsenic Mitigation and Hygiene Promotion in 2003 through community led ‘integrated, participatory, empowering’ approach. DALIT’s goal is to provide sustainable and integrated water, sanitation, arsenic mitigation and hygiene promotion services in the remote rural areas and break the contamination cycle of unsanitary latrines, contaminated water and unsafe hygiene practices. The program aims to ensure access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene promotion services for the disadvantaged communities in remote rural areas of Khulna, Jessore and Satkhira districts with the donor support. The core of the program is the CBOs as main actor at community level to assess existing water and sanitation situation of the entire village and identify issues that need urgent action. They select sites for community water sources, collect contribution money and monitor usage and maintenance of community water points and latrines. To strengthen the capacity of CBOs, DALIT provided various training for their capacity development in a way to achieve national targets as well as Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) sets the target of achieving 100% sanitation and safe water coverage by 2015. \r\n\r\nDALIT interventions are to improve the health of the disadvantaged population in an affordable, equitable and sustainable way in reducing the burden of disease, relieve human suffering and ensure considerable economic benefits, with particular focus on reducing child morbidity and mortality. Mention that hand washing alone can reduce mortality by 42%. Among the constraints to improve water and sanitation are the lack of hygienic knowledge and practices, insufficient and inadequate financial resources, and inappropriate adaptation of drinking water sources and sanitation systems. The community led approaches in the ASWASH program may help to conceptualize the water and sanitation situation, leading towards a solution overcoming these constraints. It will help the community to understand the necessity of integrating safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices, which might be a more effective measure than providing only complimentary hardware.\r\nThe situation of rural sanitation, hygiene and water supply in Bangladesh indicates that 32% people use sanitary latrines, 9% people open defecating, 20% people use hanging latrines, 7% children with diarrhea, 15% safe disposal of faces of children of under 5, and 72%* people have access to safe drinking water. Amref has 50 years’ experience in health development. In 1957, three surgeons founded the Flying Doctors Service of East Africa, laying the foundation for what is now one of the continent’s leading health development and research organisations. Today, Amref implements its projects through country programmes in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan and South Africa. Training and consulting support are provided to an additional 30 African countries.\r\n\r\nKnowledge is a core product of Amref activities. Amref implements projects to learn, and shares this evidence-based knowledge with others to advocate for changes in health policy and practice. Based on the belief that health is a basic human right, Amref seeks to empower communities to take control of their health and to establish a vibrant and participatory health care system made up of communities, health workers and governments.\r\n\r\nOur Strategic Focus:\r\nAmref strategy seeks to strengthen health systems and to design and enhance interventions that improve people’s access to health through their active participation. Informed by Africa’s health crisis, Amref’s comparative advantage and five decades’ experience of working with communities and health systems in the region, the Amref strategy will be pursued through three interdependent programme themes:\r\n- Community Partnering for Better Health\r\n- Health Systems and Policy Research\r\n- Capacity Building",

"description": "Pump Aid is a water and sanitation organisation that tackles poverty by working with local communities in southern Africa. We do this by establishing sustainable supplies of clean water and safer sanitation provisions. Pump Aid has developed a low-cost, sustainable and appropriate technology, the Elephant Pump and Elephant Toilet, to provide these solutions to water and sanitation. Both of these have won the prestigious St Andrews Prize for the Environment and Pump Aid won the World Bank Market Place award for innovation in 2006.\r\n\r\nThe long-term effects of our work will ensure greater health, gender and economic impact and increased agricultural production. Pump Aid works in Malawi and Zimbabwe; we also have a pilot programme in Liberia.\r\n\r\nWe are currently working on increasing our capacity to do monitoring and evaluation as well as improving our learning from the work we do. We also focus on improving our simple technology to make it more sustainable still through the development of a new model pump.\r\n\r\nDo contact us if you want to know more!",

Utilizing local knowledge of the people at grass root and also available resources at local level DASCOH has put forward an alternative participatory development process. It has developed a trend workforce who has professional learning as well as the capacity of being flexible in decision making. DASCOH is using coaching method to develop human capital and thus helping to develop the capacity of local government institutions, which is reflected in the project planning and management with local government, private sector, donors and the community.Currently, it operates two projects, the Sustainable Solution for the Delivery of Safe Drinking Water (SDSD) and the Public Health Project Rajshahi (PHPR).\n\n\n\nWith financial support from the Swiss Red Cross (SRC), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), DASCOH has been operating projects in the water and sanitation sector (WatSan), largely in response to the arsenic water contamination crisis. The WatSan sector has served as an entry point to an increasing engagement to strengthening the governance capacity, of the lowest local government institution (the Union Councils).",
