"description": "Help Self Help Centre (HSHC) is a local Kenyan NGO, founded in 1993. It has evolved over the years from a service delivery organization to one working across a broad spectrum of integrated development activities mainly focused on sustainable natural resource management, market led conservation and value chain development. Specifically, we work on four program areas: Agribusiness, Natural Resource Management (NRM), Nature Based Enterprises (NBE) and Climatic Change: All these programs are interlinked and they influence one another. \r\n\r\nThe innovativeness of HSHC programs is demonstrated by being the first organization in Kenya to have produced biodiesel commercially from natural seeds. We have also managed to commercialize a forest based essential oil (cape chestnut) using a unique business model that is meant to maximize local returns and motivate people to conserve the forest. These two has offered a concrete alternative income stream to local farmers in an environment that is increasingly becoming unfriendly to agriculture because of the impact of climatic change.",

"description": "The Hydraulic Research station is (HRS) is a pioneer centre for water research activities in Sudan located in Wad Medani. It is one of the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources (MOIWR) general directorates and represents its research arm.\r\n\r\nHydraulic Research Station was established in 1976 through generous help from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to lend support for sound and sustainable national water resource development and management. Development of HRS as UNDP/UNESCO assisted project was completed in 1986. By then all responsibilities were turned over to HRS MOIWR\r\n\r\nOver the years, HRS has established a reputable record of research achievements in areas like river training, sediment transport and management, irrigation engineering and management, and water resources planning and management.\r\n\r\nHRS acquired this reputation from long practice, experience and excellent performance in solving real life problems. There is a strong link between the applied research activities and the needs of the National Water Research Centre and the Ministry of Irrigation & Water Resources plans. In addition, the HRS carries out studies for other ministries, governmental and non-governmental bodies and consulting firms. Also, technical training and international cooperation in river engineering subjects have been helpful to build institutional capacity and sustain technology transfer programs ",

Home of Hope is made up of different houses, where small groups of children live under the supervision of their ‘house parents’. There are currently 90 children living at Home of Hope. \r\n\r\nThe progress that the children make at Home of Hope is enormous and so rewarding. When they arrive they are very often scared and traumatised by their past – you only have to look into their eyes to see their pain. After a while you will see huge changes – their confidence grows and big smiles soon replace tears. Most of all they learn how to become children again. ",

"description": "There are about 7-9 million homebased workers in the Philippines doing both piece-rated and own account work in rural and urban areas. Like many others working in the informal economy, they suffer from invisibility, poor working and living conditions, lack of resources and social protection.\r\n\r\nPambansang Tagapag-ugnay ng mga Manggagawa sa Bahay (PATAMABA) Inc. or the National Network of Homeworkers, was founded in May 1989 with the objective of creating, strengthening, consolidating and expanding the national network of homebased workers and providing support services for their personal, social and economic well-being.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA helps homebased workers form self-sustaining groups at the grassroots level. At the policy level, it acta to raise awareness about homebased workers and to bring about the necessary policy changes for the benefit of this informal sector.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA has a total membership of about 14,138, 98 percent of whom are women as end of 2003 in its formal registry. Most of these women work in garments, footwear, bamboo, weaving, toy-making, food processing, handicraft and other cottage industries. In addition, the PATAMABA youth sector has been actively recruiting from among their ranks, and has reported a membership of at least 2,000.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA’s key initiatives include education and training, socio-economic assistance, networking and advocacy, social protection and the empowerment of women.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\n\r\nIt all started in 1975, I when a group of rural women founded the Association of the New Filipina (known as KaBaPa), to work for equality, development and peace as laid down by the United Nations in its declaration of International Women’s Year.\r\n\r\nIn the 1980s, community organizers from the KaBaPa together with researchers from the University of the Philippines (UP) came to know that thousands of women, even in the remotest of villages, did farmed-out work for exporters and local manufacturers. These women embroidered dresses and tablecloths, and sewed children’s clothes and schoolbags. They were also weavers, food producers/processors, and makers of handicrafts, footwear, novelty items, fashion accessories and furniture.\r\n\r\nCommon features observed in this group of women homeworkers were low piece rates, poor working conditions, lack of access to resources and to social protection, lack of proper organization and an absence of awareness about their rights as workers and women. Many of them were being exploited by profit-hungry middlemen and exporters; their work was enriching many foreign importers and Filipino traders. For example, some of them who made baby dresses earned a measly ten US cents for a product sold for 15 US dollars at US department stores.\r\n\r\nThe KaBaPa realized that it had a large number of homeworkers among its ranks. When the International Labour Organization (ILO) asked KABAPA leaders to work on a project to organize homebased workers in 1988, they quickly consented.\r\n\r\nDuring a meeting convened by KABAPA of 29 homebased worker-leaders from nine provinces, it became evident that homebased work was a widespread phenomenon in the Philippines and that they all shared similar circumstances and needs. They also realized that they were in many ways ‘invisible’ to the rest of society, especially policy-makers, and that if they wanted to better their lives, they would have to organize themselves at a national level. With this realization, Pambansang Tagapag-ugnay ng mga Manggagawa sa Bahay (PATAMABA), the National Network of Homeworkers, was born.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA was first formed as a committee within KaBaPa. Later, in May 1989, PATAMABA Inc. became independent. It, however, continues to work in close collaboration with KaBaPa.\r\n\r\nThe (ILO), together with KaBaPa, the University of the Philippines, and the Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE), launched Program HOPE aimed at organizing and assisting homeworkers in the Philippines. A systematic awareness raising campaign for homeworkers, with special emphasis on women, was set in motion.\r\n\r\nFor the women themselves, this was the first time they actually began to think of themselves as workers rather than just rural women/housewives with special needs and rights. They saw themselves contributing so much to the national economy yet remained neglected, unrecognized, and invisible in national statistics.",

"description": "A fair, free and sustainable world – that is what Hivos, the Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation, wants to contribute to. Together with local organisations in developing countries, Hivos strives for a world in which all citizens – both men and women – have equal access to resources and opportunities for development.\r\nHivos is a Dutch non-governmental organisation guided by humanist values. A number of its core values are human dignity and self determination, an aversion to dogmas and totalitarian regimes, and a sense of mutual solidarity. The organisation is committed to poor and marginalised peoples in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It strives for the long-term improvement of their circumstances and for the empowerment of women in particular.\r\n\r\nThe work of Hivos aims at structurally alleviating poverty, with an emphasis on civil society building and on sustainable economic development. The efforts of Hivos are focused on nine themes: financial services and business development; sustainable production; human rights and democratisation; HIV/AIDS; gender, women and development; art and culture; ICT & media; advocacy and communication; and the knowledge programme. You can read more about each one of these themes on this website.\r\n\r\nJoining forces and pooling resources is crucial to achieve the objectives of Hivos. Hivos supports over 800 partner organisations in more than 30 countries through financial means and institutional support as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience. In addition, Hivos works together with a number of organisations, companies and governments in the Netherlands and Europe, and it belongs to various national and international networks. Hivos also conducts advocacy activities itself in the Netherlands, throughout Europe and worldwide.\r\n\r\nHivos is a non-governmental organisation with a societal goal which plays a public role. Hivos is one of the four largest organisations in the ‘co-financing system’ of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Dutch general public, the Dutch government, other sponsors, partners and partner organisations in developing countries are the most important stakeholders.\r\n\r\nHivos is ISO certified; it has the CBF quality mark and is one of the beneficiaries of the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.",

The secrets to the rise of Angkor are to be found in the lesser known temples and the countless prehistoric settlements and cemeteries across Cambodia.\r\n\r\nHeritage Watch was founded in 2003 as a result of a sharp increase in the destruction of Cambodia’s precious cultural heritage - especially the looting of ancient temples and cemetery sites nationwide. \r\n\r\nHeritage Watch is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the world, through research, education, and advocacy.\r\n\r\nIts mandate is to:\r\n • study threats to cultural heritage, including the illicit trade in antiquities, the looting of archaeological sites, and loss of historic architecture, among others.\r\n\r\n • educate the public on the artistic, informational, historical, cultural, and economic importance of heritage resources\r\n\r\n • increase access to and awareness of national and international law affecting cultural property, while working with the proper authorities to implement, enforce, and improve it.\r\n\r\n• Promote responsible tourism that furthers cultural and economic development and encourage the tourism industry to support the arts, culture, heritage and development.\r\n\r\n• foster communication between relevant governmental and intergovernmental agencies, nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions, and individuals\r\n\r\nHeritage Watch has undertaken a diverse range of projects aimed at both the supply and demand end of the international antiquities trade as well as promoting responsible tourism in Cambodia.",
