"description": "The Bernard van Leer Foundation funds and shares knowledge about work in early childhood development. The foundation was established in 1949 and is based in the Netherlands. Our income is derived from the sale of Royal Packaging Industries Van Leer N.V., bequeathed to the foundation by Dutch industrialist and philanthropist Bernard van Leer (1883 to 1958, pictured). (More about our history and income).\r\n\r\nOur mission is to improve opportunities for children up to age 8 who are growing up in socially and economically difficult circumstances. We see this both as a valuable end in itself and as a long-term means to promoting more cohesive, considerate and creative societies with equal opportunities and rights for all. \r\n\r\nOur grantmaking works primarily through supporting programmes implemented by local partners in selected countries. Our partners include public, private and community-based organisations. Working through partnerships is intended to build local capacity, promote innovation and flexibility, and help to ensure that the work we fund is culturally and contextually appropriate.\r\n\r\nWe also aim to leverage our impact by working with influential allies to advocate for young children. Our free publications share lessons we have learned from our own grantmaking activities and feature agenda-setting contributions from outside experts. Through our publications and advocacy, we aim to inform and influence policy and practice not only in the countries where we operate but globally.",

"description": "Between today and 2015, 700,000 mothers will not survive delivering their children unless the available healthcare improves. The rate of maternal mortality is disturbingly high, particularly in fragile countries such as the Central African Republic, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Corruption and a failing administration continually impair healthcare in these countries.\r\n\r\nThe time has come to make healthcare accessible to all people regardless of whether they live in rich or poor areas. The approach used tightens controls and enables patients to take part in deciding their own treatment. In addition, staff remuneration has been made dependent on the achieved results in order to motivate staff to go the extra mile. An approach is called for that not only limits patient contribution to healthcare but also improves its accessibility.\r\n\r\nAll in all, it is time for change. Healthy women are the pillars of both their families and of society. Not only should they be informed how to stay healthy, but also that it is their right to do so; healthcare must be accessible to them. Medical supervision both before and during their pregnancy is crucial. Cordaid works on improving this for all women.\r\n\r\nCordaid aims at providing affordable and accessible healthcare to all, which it has done for many years. Its approach -- using the most recent developments and finance methods -- is followed throughout the world.",

"description": "The Connect4Change consortium consists of six Dutch development and specialist ICT organisations (IICD, ICCO, Akvo, Cordaid, Edukans, Text to Change), all with extensive experience and vision on how to integrate information and communication technologies in their programmes to alleviate poverty and improve development.\r\n\r\nICT has changed and is changing the world. It is one of the main drivers behind globalisation, the creation of economic opportunities and empowerment of individuals. ICT has changed the lives of millions for the better and is an important tool in fighting poverty. Yet, many lack the possibility to profit from the opportunities arising. Realisation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will be accelerated by using ICT in a smart and sustainable way. It is against this background that Dutch development organisations and specialized ICT organisations Akvo, Cordaid, Edukans, ICCO and IICD have decided to collaborate by setting-up the Connect4Change Consortium. The consortium works closely together with preferred partner Text to Change.\r\nThe Connect4Change Consortium has a vision of a world where people, in particular young people and women and girls, are able to access relevant information and create their own future. Information and communication technologies are a powerful instrument that can speed up the process of development and empowerment of individuals. "description": "Walking for Water is the International variant of the Dutch Wandelen voor Water campaign.\r\n\r\nWalking for Water is an awareness and fundraising initiative which takes place around World Water Day (22 March). School children aged 10-13 are sponsored by friends and family to walk 6 kilometres, while carrying 6 litres of water in a backpack. With two important results: kids learn about global water issues and raise funds to help solve them. Lectures by teachers and external guest on the importance of clean drinking water and proper sanitation ensure the educational nature of the event.\r\n\r\nThe experience helps kids understand what many children their age in developing countries must do every single day, often at the expense of being in school. It is a motivating and effective community event to engage the younger generation on an important topic and teach them that they can make a difference in the lives of others.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\nThe concept of Walking for Water was pioneered in the Netherlands by NGO Aqua for All, and has grown in popularity every year since it started 8 years ago. Results have been impressive — in 2010, 18.000 children from over 400 schools Walked for Water, raising €1.2 million for water projects around the world. Schools choose a project to fund with the money raised, and see the project unfold online.",
