In order to create publicity for this project, Robert Knol will attempt on 24 january 2011 a Guinness World Record of cycling single-handed in less than 80 days from Cairo (Egypt) to Cape-Town (South Africa). The expedition can be followed on the website www.11000km.nl. \r\n\r\nThe past years the Friends of Nyanje foundation supported pupils of the Nyanje hospital employees by donating money for scholarships and supply of school-desks.",

The mission of the Catholic health services in Uganda is derived from the mission of the Church which has a mandate, based on the imitation of Christ and His deeds, to promote life to the full and to heal. These services are committed to a holistic approach in healing by treating and preventing diseases, with a preferential option for the less privileged.\r\n\r\n2. Since the person is at the centre of all activities of the catholic health services, a basic attitude of respect for the human dignity will be the guideline for all. Therefore the principle of subsidiarity will be applied with equity in all relationships within the catholic health service network.\r\n\r\n3. Justice, universality and equality will mark the work of all catholic health units in Uganda. Their work will be done in a professional way and in a spirit of total dedication and transparency. Human life being sacred, the basic attitude of all personnel in catholic health services will be the healing of the person with total respect for life",

"description": "Close the Gap is an international not-for-profit organisation that actively helps to bridge the digital divide. The objective is to assist in improving local knowledge and putting local talent to use by offering cost-efficient IT-solutions to projects in developing countries.\r\n\r\nIn the industrialised world, computers are replaced every three to four years, meaning that companies are increasingly looking for sustainable ways to replace their used devices. At the same time, millions of computers are needed in developing countries.\r\n\r\nIt is here that Close the Gap creates win-win situations. By supplying developing countries with high-quality refurbished IT equipment that is donated by Western countries, Close the Gap creates practical, social and sustainable solutions that enable people to bring about a true change in their lives through the use of IT.\r\n\r\nSince its founding in 2003, Close the Gap has managed to reinstall tens of thousands of PCs donated by companies in Europe, offering local communities and individuals access to information. With the right tools, people in developing countries can significantly improve the quality of their lives. Access to communication technologies is predominantly vital in enabling them to reach this objective. Computers are used for a large variety of applications and have consequently become an essential part of the personal, educational and professional world. One tends to forget that one of the basic assets provided by computers is access to all kinds of information. Hence, the difference that access to information can make to a person’s life is immeasurable.\r\n\r\nWhen donations are made, Close the Gap’s logistic partner collects the IT equipment. It is then checked by professionals, repaired if needed and reconfigured before it is sent off to a designated project.\r\n\r\nClose the Gap is mostly active in Africa, but also in other developing countries in South-East Asia and South-America. The organisation mainly supports projects in the socio-educational sector, such as schools, universities, hospitals and other programmes focusing on the improvement of educational and information facilities.\r\n\r\nHowever diverse the projects may be, they all have one common denominator: to focus on advancing both the individual and the community within a spirit of social education.",

"description": "SEND-West Africa is a consolidation of three autonomous national non-governmental organisations: SEND-Ghana, SEND-Liberia and SEND-Sierra Leone with each country programme guided by an independent strategic plan. SEND became operational in Ghana in 1998; Liberia in 2004; and Sierra-Leone in 2007. Informed by the marked differences in the political and economic contexts of these countries, each country programme has separate management and programming strategies to respond effectively to the respective country needs and peculiarities.\r\n\r\nSEND-Ghana is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in August 1998 with the maiden name: Social Enterprise Development (SEND) Foundation of West Africa. In 2000, SEND-Ghana started the implementation of its first programme – the Eastern Corridor Livelihood Security Promotion Programme (ECLSPP) – aimed at addressing practical development needs of communities through an integrated approach to service delivery. \r\n\r\nSEND Liberia is the second oldest and largest Program. Efforts to establish it started in 1999 but this initiative was aborted due to the escalation of the civil war at the time. In 2003 the comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the war was achieved and SEND, like most civil society organizations, in 2004, renewed engagement with Liberia by registering with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs.\r\n\r\nSEND Sierra Leone’s programme aims to alleviate poverty and promote equality between women and men in Kailahun District. Through its projects SEND-Sierra Leone applies a participatory integrated development approach, which promotes gender equality and includes advocacy for the poor.It aims to work to address basic needs, as well as the systemic causes of poverty and injustice.",

We began in 1974 by offering assistance to poor patients of Bethesda Hospital whose problems could not be solved by the hospital alone. After several years we realized that illnesses in communities are often caused by factors such as poverty, ignorance and social injustice. In order to help the communities solve these problems, CD Bethesda evolved into a primary and holistic health services institution, expanding the scope of our work to include community development, training and education in addition to providing basic health services. These community based programs and trainings empower the people to help themselves overcome their basic health problems giving them hope in their battle to overcome poverty.",

"description": "The Women and Development Project WADEP) is located in the northern part of the Volta Region since 1995. This initiative came as a result of the abject poverty which was analyzed as multidimensional, gendered, dynamic, complex and specific as a result of the location of the district. Women bear the brunt of this as result of culture. They work longer hours and days and had limited access to income earning opportunities yet are responsible for meeting the needs of the household.\r\n\r\nWomen culturally do not make traditional laws but they turn out to be the gatekeepers or custodians even when they are suppressive or detrimental to their development, they faithfully protect it for continuity.\r\n\r\nThough there is some improvement in the education of women and they are participating in the labour force they are hardly found in the top hierarchy. Women’s participation in decision making about issues that concern them is still a challenge.",

"description": "Overcome poverty and shape one's own life: this is what the German Development Service (DED) works for. It operates worldwide with organisations in countries where people suffer from poverty and its many consequences on nutrition, health, and the opportunity to participate in social and political life. DED's goal is to improve these people's lives fundamentally. As a public-benefit organisation, DED cooperates with local partners. DED technical advisers are experienced and committed experts on limited-term assignments, who work with local active organisations to induce positive change. DED also works with local experts and specialists to ensure the sustainability of this development process, thereby strengthening local competences and partner organisations' responsibility and initiative, so that local people can shape their future themselves in the long term. DED technical advisers in turn benefit from the knowledge, experience and contacts of their local colleagues. This knowledge is of inestimable value for effective cooperation.\r\nDED also offers young people the opportunity to gain experience worldwide. The Young Professionals Programme is a scholarship scheme which enables young people embarking on a career and university graduates to work in a project during a one-year stay in a DED partner country, to get to know how DED and its partners work, and to develop social competence for living and working in another culture. The Young Professionals Programme is intended to encourage them and, at the same time, enhance their subsequent opportunities to work in development cooperation institutions in Germany and abroad. DED also offers young people aged 18 to 23 the opportunity to participate in \"weltwärts\" – the international volunteer programme of the German Federal Government.\r\nDED operates on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). With its nuanced range of personnel and services, DED is recognised worldwide as one of the leading European development services for personnel cooperation. Since its formation in 1963, more than 16,000 technical advisers have worked on reducing poverty through sustainable development. Currently, some 2 000 technical advisers are working in 48 countries.",
