Having initially focused purely on start-up investments, we are now considering investments at later stages as well, including expansion-led capital and management buyouts with an enterprise value of up to €50m.\r\n \r\nTo date, we have invested in nearly 20 businesses, mainly in the UK, originating both from within Unilever and from external sources. Our focus is to support businesses that deliver a compelling consumer proposition in growth markets, whether that be product or service led. We also have interests in several technology-led spin outs where we have been able to utilise a technology that has emerged through Unilever’s leading research labs.\r\n \r\nWe have a strong team of 11, drawn both from within Unilever and the private equity sector, we are based in central London.",

"description": "Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) is a leading non-government organization (NGO) of Bangladesh established with the motto of ‘Divine and Humanitarian Service’ in 1958 by Hazrat Khanbahadur Ahsanullah (r). an eminent educationist, social reformer and spiritual leader of the Indian sub-continent. The founding aim of DAM is the social and spiritual development of the human community at large. DAM made paradigm shift in the mid-seventies from welfare to development approach with programme operation primarily in education and human development sectors. Since that time DAM has been diversifying its development interventions with expansion of programme coverage both geographically and in population. With its multifaceted and diversified programmes and activities DAM is now in a very unique position to work with the people, particularly the disadvantaged, with need-based services toward improvement of their living conditions.\r\n\r\nDhaka Ahsania Mission launched first community learning centre, locally known as Gonokendra, in 1987. The centre is meant for lifelong learning and community development. There are more than 100 Gonokendras across the country, of which five are ICT-based. As the objectives of the centres were sharing knowledge and information, they started with traditional tools. Each of the centres is functioning as a community-based information centre of local GO-NGO extension departments. People can come to the centres to read newspapers and exchange experience, learn from success stories, get information about innovations, which can improve their livelihoods. A few centres started using computer for interactive information communication. By working together, the women of Aspire make their own choices and take control of their future. Aspire's mission is built on the belief that the promotion of human dignity and women’s rights will lead to positive sustainable community development and strong and lasting grassroots reconciliation. Every year Aspire adopts 100 women in Kigali into its training program. They are divided into working groups of 25-30 and through participation in the twelve month curriculum, which includes rights based education in basic literacy, healthcare and business and skills training and counselling services, the beneficiaries of this programme will be able to read and write, be more aware of their rights and empowered to exercise them, have collected a range of practical skills and built a network of community friendship support.\r\n\r\nThe women are encouraged to pass these skills to their children and communities – reinforcing these vital lessons to a wider audience. This in itself is self-sustaining and promotes the creation of successful and peaceful communities. Peace Ruzage founded the Aspire programme in 2007, after she observed idle and frustrated groups of women in her neighbourhood arguing amongst themselves. Peace spent time talking with her neighbours and discovered the women were bored and marginalised from society, lacking hope for their own and their children’s futures. Most of the women were illiterate, uneducated, unskilled widows and single mothers with many children.\r\n\r\nDue to disempowerment, impoverishment, lack of awareness of their rights, teamed with the inability to express themselves, they had little chance of changing their circumstances. Poverty had forced some of the women into prostitution and illegal trading, many were suffering from HIV/AIDs, and were victims of domestic and sexual violence, substance abuse, and violence during the war and Genocide. Peace assumed the traditional role of ‘wise aunty’, and offered her veranda as a safe, open area where the women and their children could spend time and socialise. It became a forum for mediation between antagonists. She kick-started an important process, encouraging the women to talk to one another, work, and solve problems together.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, the legacy of Rwanda’s past has meant that some ethnic tension still exists in parts of the community. This tension can impede positive, local development and reconciliation. Rooted in her commitment to human dignity, equality and a peaceful future, Peace has successfully brought together women - regardless of their background - to be educated, trained, work and to socialise, thereby promoting cooperation, friendship and reconciliation. The Aspire women have formed a strong network of friendship and support, they have started sustainable economic activities, and they are increasingly aware of their rights and empowered as a result- all of which sprung from simple dialogue and cooperation.\r\n\r\nNetwork for Africa is advocating for, and financially supporting Aspire so that it can sustain and develop its vital programme empowering vulnerable women of Kigali.",

"description": "Earth Water was founded on the simple concept, ‘If you had the chance, would you change the world’.\r\n\r\nIt is Earth Water International's mandate to give 100% of our net profits through Akvo to provide clean drinking water to millions of refugees around the world. Everyday 6000 people die because of the lack of drinkable water, most of these deaths are among children. For this reason our shareholders are every man, woman and child living around the world without the most essential element needed to sustain human life: clean fresh water. In order to get our money to where it is needed the most as effectively and efficiently as possible, Earth Water International has secured the cooperation and support of the UNESCO-IHE. Akvo's partner network possesses the infrastructure, personnel and expertise to ensure that the money from the sale of Earth Water directly benefits those who need it the most. We at Earth Water are proud to support their efforts.",

We ensure access to universal, high quality, comprehensive healthcare including primary care and care for infectious diseases such as malaria.\r\n2. We integrate healthcare with education, microfinance, and community mobilization to address the root causes of poverty and disease.\r\n3. We partner with the poor in destitute communities. We listen to their needs, assets, and priorities. We bring together local wisdom and international expertise.\r\n4. We strengthen and compliment the public sector, avoid building parallel systems, and advocate for evidence-based policy change.\r\n5. We are serious about measuring impact, and we practice evidence-based development.\r\n",

"description": "The Ecological Management Foundation (EMF) is a typical non-profit, network organization: the head office is based in Amsterdam and staffed by a committed group of part-time employees and volunteers; several partner organizations around the world share the same ideals and ambitions and provide support where and when needed.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, EMF is dedicated to improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities in developing countries. EMF identifies, promotes and incubates small-scale projects that are innovative, practical, solution-oriented, and have a broad impact in the target country. We achieve this through providing three types of services:\r\n\r\n1) Think tank:\r\nWe watch trends and set out a vision on the kind of innovation that would alleviate the shortage of clean water in developing countries. We spread awareness of third world water issues through articles, documentaries and workshops.\r\n \r\n2) Match Maker:\r\nWe build networks and translate trends and visions from the think tank into viable projects and initiatives by bringing key partners together.\r\n\r\n3) Incubator:\r\nWe initiate pilot projects and compile business plans and road maps to scale up successful pilots.",

"description": "The Palestinian Department of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage (DACH) has been in existence now for more than 12 years since its re-establishment in August 1994. The inauguration of the DACH, under the Palestinian National Authority, was a momentous event and represents the revival of the Department of Antiquities established in 1920 under the British Mandate and terminated with the political events of 1948, when Israel was established. Subsequently, Jordan assumed those responsibilities for the West Bank, and Egypt for the Gaza strip.\r\n\r\nWhen the DACH was established it possessed no archaeological records or finds from excavations undertaken previously.\r\n\r\nMoreover, because of inadequate opportunities for field training, the Department inherited a serious shortage of qualified personnel. The new situation gives Palestinians an independent role to explore the history of Palestine from its primary material sources, a task reserved until recently for foreign archaeologists. This situation had often led to the political and ideological use of this material and interpretation without objective scientific controls.\r\n\r\nThe establishment of the DACH marks the beginning of the local field school of archaeology. The perspective on which the Department is basing its efforts in research, education, preservation, and legislation is basically that of contemporary internationally accepted standards. It is the modern humanistic understanding that views the integral role of Palestinian culture within Archaeology in Palestine human culture, making archaeology in Palestine a scientific enterprise within the setting of international scientific Endeavour. The old antiquities law of 1929 was grounded in the conventional concept of archaeology. \r\n",

"description": "The Faculty of Archaeology of Leiden University is the only archaeology faculty in the Netherlands. This independence makes it possible to pursue an efficient and stimulating policy in the fields of education and research, and to take advantage of new developments. The faculty is located in the Reuvens Building on the Reuvensplaats.\r\n\r\nThe ambition of the faculty is to develop into a prominent archaeological research and training centre at a European level. In European terms, the faculty is an averagely-sized institute, with a wide range of specializations and several specialist (laboratory) facilities. Leiden can pride itself on a long archaeological tradition, going back to Professor Reuvens at the beginning of the 19th century.\r\n\r\nApart from the traditionally strong Prehistory of Northwestern Europe and Classical Archaeology, Leiden offers (as the only university in the Netherlands) a specialization in the Palaeolithic, and in the archaeology of the civilizations of the Near East, Asia, and the Americas, as well as a number of archaeological sciences, such as pollen analysis, archaeozoology, computer applications, ceramology, and microwear analysis.\r\n\r\nThe variety of non-western language and culture studies within the Faculty of Arts (CNWS), and the presence in Leiden of the National Museums of Ethnology and Antiquities, as well as Naturalis, are also enhancing factors.\r\n\r\nA clearly social responsibility of archaeology is the care of the material heritage of past cultures. International treaties (for instance Valetta) state that archaeological investigations should be carried out prior to large building projects. The faculty is active in this field via a commercial company. Hence, students get quickly involved in the practical side (traineeships) of archaeology, with attention to the managerial side of archaeological work. In addition, the faculty has agreements of cooperation with local archaeological services in the surroundings (Leiden, The Hague, Delft).\r\n\r\nAt present, the faculty has a strong market position in the Netherlands. In the last few years, the faculty has been able to welcome more than 80 new students annually. At present, the total number of students amounts to about 350.\r\n",

"description": "The East London Child and Youth Care Centre have been in existence since 1924. In the early years, emphasis was placed on custodial care, i.e. feeding, clothing, education and housing the orphans of war. The Home was in the Malcomess House, which was run as a large institution.\r\n\r\nTwenty-Two years ago, the Children’s Home acquired 5 houses in areas around the city. The children are now housed in group-homes, to create a hild-friendly environment. They range in ages from birth to 18 years. Each home can care for approximately 11 to 13 children. Most of the children in care are from disadvantaged communities, or dysfunctional families, and have been severely neglected; these include our HIV positive children. On average, there are around 121 children in full-time care.\r\n\r\nThe services of the East London Child and Youth Care Centre have developed over the last 84 years from purely residential care programmes to include community-based programmes focused on prevention and early intervention. A child should only be institutionalised as a last resort, and the emphasis is on keeping the child in his/her own environment.\r\n\r\nIn the nearby Fort Grey informal settlement, the Ubuntu Care, Development and Empowerment Centre was established in 1999. The centre provides a one-stop facility, where the community can come for support, guidance and assistance when in crisis (rape, drug abuse, violence, family problems, etc.). The centre provides aftercare facilities for children from the Sinomonde, Fort Grey and Santa Primary schools. A childcare in schools programme is operating in Willow Park School and Fort Grey Primary. An HTA Project (High Transmission Area) is also provided in this area. The Isibindi programme was launched in Fort Grey and Ncera Village three in March 2008.\r\n\r\nIn March 2008 the directors of the House on the Rock Section 21 Company approached the East London Child and Youth Care center to assist in managing the Centre. After consultation with the Department of Social Development it was agreed that we would manage the center until a long-term solution was found.\r\n\r\nThe services and programmes offered are diverse and adapted to the needs of the community served by the East London Child and Youth Care Centre. The Centre aims to not duplicate services, but network with existing organisations where possible in order to provide comprehensive services throughout the community.",

With teaching a staff of over a hundred and a student population of one thousand one hundred and thirty five girls, it is also one of the largest educational institutions in the Maltese Islands. Like all other state secondary level schools in Malta it offers an educational programme which follows the National Minimum Curriculum for Secondary Schools.\r\nThe school (formerly known as St. Mary's Grammar School) is named after Can Gian Piet Agius de Soldanis (1712 - 1770) a pioneer in Maltese linguistics and philosophy. Born in Victoria, Gozo, Agius de Soldanis is mostly remembered as the author of a history book about Gozo: Gozo Antico e Moderno, Sacro e Profano.",

"description": "Established in 1987, FUNDAUNIBÁN’s mission is to design and execute quality of life improvement programs for banana-producing communities and agro-industrial regions in Colombia. Specifically, FUNDAUNIBÁN’s integral development programs are based in the Urabá region of the department of Antioquia and the Santa Marta region of the department of Magdalena. The organization’s administrative headquarters is located in the city of Medellin.\r\n\r\nFUNDAUNIBÁN implements activities in the fields of housing and community infrastructure; formal education; environmental sustainability and conservation of natural resources; capacity building to promote civic participation and self-determination; and economic development focused on training, technical assistance, and credit to microenterprises, cooperatives and family businesses.\r\n\r\nFUNDAUNIBÁN's work is guided by the four methodological principles of participation, community-led management, collaboration and inter-institutional coordination. The organization believes in approaching its social, economic, housing and community infrastructure projects through partnerships and values transparency in how it informs internal and external stakeholders about these initiatives’ progress and outcomes. The promotion of education at all levels serves as the foundation for FUNDAUNIBÁN's work in economic and social development and environmental conservation. ",
