AFSRT contributes to the empowerment of rural communities in the Northern and Eastern regions of Uganda, through provision of appropriate information, skills and resources for equitable support of grassroots’ communities and their institutions to enhance participatory, economically dynamic and environmentally sustainable rural development.\r\n\r\nWe are working in Lango, Teso and Bunyoro sub-regions for the purpose of bridging the existing gaps in the service provision, especially in the agricultural, health, education, water and sanitation, and environmental sectors. In recent years the organisation has been scaling up its activities all geared towards sustainable development.",

Its action is in line with the policy set out in France’s Framework Document for Development Cooperation. This document was approved at the end of 2010 and in 2011 was translated into a three-year contract specifying objectives and resources between the French Government and AFD.\r\n\r\n--\r\n\r\nL’Agence Française de Développement (AFD) est un Etablissement Public à caractère Industriel et\r\nCommercial relevant de la loi bancaire en tant qu’établissement financier spécialisé.

"description": "Afya Connect (4) Change Lake Zone (also called AfyaC4C) intends to implement Health Management Information System (HMIS) in order to improve the capacity of the hospitals/health centers and dispensaries of Faith Based Organization (FBO) Private owned health facilities and Public owned health facilities along the Lake Zone to assist them provide quality and efficient health care services to the community. \r\nThe project aims at enabling the said facilities to obtain accurate and timely data that will affect the quality of decisions to be made. Also facilities will be able to accurately supervise and account for all the revenue collected.\r\nICT will change the way people store, retrieve, present and share information. This will improve the pace at which organizations performs their activities while reducing costs by taking advantage of knowledge and tools made available by this digital age. Streamlining organizational activities while improving responsiveness to client’s need, which is a key distinguishing factor that will add competitive edge to modern organisation. It also allows to make use of telemedicine and eLearning to further enhance the capacity and quality of care.\r\nThe main reason which triggered for this project was lack of accurate and timely data in the health sector. This is a national problem. During the Round Table workshop in 2005, health information systems were identified as an appropriate way to improve the quality of health data and to reinforce the management of the health system. This problem is more severe for health facilities owned by civil society. Without proper data, proper analysis would be impossible and hence automatically affect the quality of decisions to be made. Also without proper data keeping, access to the secretarial basket funding is limited and the interventions of the Civil Society Organizations (CSO) remains relatively small. Furthermore, a data driven health sector is more responsive to the end users, more accurate in its interventions, more accountable and fosters a learning environment that would promote the analysis of data closer to the points of data generation. This reduces the reliance on centralized knowledge generation and intervention planning. At national level the need for appropriate health information is recognized and included in the Health Systems Strengthening Program III. This is further elaborated in an e-Health strategy. \r\nICT has been identified as a critical tool in development today and has vast potentials in improving the delivery of health services. The Afya Connect (4) Change Lake Zone envisages the establishment of an adequate network to facilitate quick and quality Health Management Information System covering the main health units and programs in the region. The project has previously supported the building of Health Management Information Systems at various facilities that are owned and managed by the three biggest Faith Based Organizations and the Government operating in Mwanza; namely Afyac4c is designed to assist the facilities and parent organizations to manage their operations better. In addition, this project has built the capacity of the CMOs office to receive, store, analyze and re-transmit vital health data both to the higher administrative levels of the government as well as downward to the data generators. These various information systems were then woven together with a simple, yet robust communication platform (AfyaPro) with which data can be shared instantaneously.",

"description": "African Monitor has taken time to understand how the poor currently live and survive, hypothesizing that a better understanding of how communities currently survive will lead to improved understanding of how development actors can work with grassroots communities to strengthen and sustain their livelihoods. We at African Monitor learnt that most of the poor survive by engaging actively and creatively in small income generating activities within the informal sector. They consist of the rural poor primarily engaged in agriculture, the isolated urban poor located in slums and shanty towns, and masses of young people excluded from formal economic activity. Realizing this, the question African Monitor is asking is “how does one design development systems and economies which works for grassroots communities?”\r\n\r\nFrom the perspective of grassroots communities with which African Monitor works, the message is clear – the African Moment will be realized when all of Africa’s citizens are able to effectively access the continent’s resources and economic opportunities so that they can independently generate and sustain their own livelihoods. It is clear that grassroots communities are largely not seeking handouts – but rather seek the same opportunities afforded to others, which make it possible to survive and thrive. To address this current urgent need, African Monitor has adopted an agenda to Unlock the African Moment for grassroots communities, by promoting policies, approaches and practices that increase grassroots’ ‘capability to function’; and those that unlock the grassroots potential to be the drivers of Africa’s economic rejuvenation.",

ACC places emphasis on a three tier approach of integrating Knowledge, Environment and Livelihoods in resolving principal problems facing Biodiversity Conservation in East Africa. To achieve this, ACC serves a number of complimentary functions: Forging interdisciplinary approaches to Conservation advanced training, Research into issues with broad application and policy implications. ACC developed from a small nucleus of Kenya Nationals associated with Wildlife Conservation International (Kenya) WCI, a Division of NYZS the Wildlife Conservation Strategy to respond to conservation challenges in East Africa. In its formative years, ACC pioneered research methods in Ecosystems research and Ecotourism. It also pioneered Community-based Conservation concepts and practices. ACC selects pilot Conservation projects with a high chance of success and broad application in these areas ACC believes in saving African wildlife through sound Science, local initiatives, and good Governance. \r\n\r\nA primary aim is to bring together the people and skills needed to build East Africa’s capacity to conserve Wildlife. ACC achieves its Mission through programs that conserve Ecosystems and maintain continuous and open Landscapes and those that improve the incomes and Livelihoods of local Communities through the sustainable utilization of Wildlife and Natural Resources. ACC also seeks to establish strong Community-based institutional structures that address common and salient conservation and livelihood challenges. ACC’s conservation programs are based on a multi-pronged approach. Although the African Conservation Centre’s core mandate is conservation, this cannot take place in a vacuum. Communities impacted by conservation activities must become part and parcel of the total Conservation efforts. To this end, Scientists studying the conservation of Fauna and Flora or any other Natural Resources increasingly engage with Communities that share the relevant Ecosystems with the subjects of Conservation.",

"description": "Africa Alive! is a youth-serving organization started in 1998 with a vision to build and empower a healthier HIV/AIDS free generation of African youth. The mission of Africa Alive! is to promote positive behavior change among young people through advocacy, empowerment, partnership and resource/community mobilization, in order to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa. \r\n\r\nThe initiatives developed and undertaken by Africa Alive! over the past years have adopted the strategic approach of creating a favorable environment for, and promoting broad based community discourse on healthy and high risk sexual behaviors. The organization’s mandate promotes the full participation of young people at every level of programme implementation. Africa Alive! uses audience and message strategy of edutainment (entertainment education). \r\n\r\nThis approach combines entertainment and education to attract the attention and provide a forum for delivering behaviour change messages. Africa Alive! reaches African youth by tapping into popular, creative channels of communication that appeal to youth in Africa and all over the world such as;\r\n• Radio and TV drama that help educate and promote safe behaviours by depicting and discussing HIV/AIDS prevention and dealing with the decision-making process regarding sexual activity \r\n• Puppetry- using puppetry and folk media as an entertainment and educational tool of reaching the youth with appropriate messages on their reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention, including community sensitization and mobilization on the uptake of other RH services such as STI screening, FP services and VCT.\r\n• Traveling road shows (music performance and quiz) that reach both urban and rural areas, getting youth involved in talking about HIV/AIDS\r\n• Radio and TV variety/talk shows with phone-ins, discussions, and mini-draws addressing HIV/AIDS\r\n• Peer education outreach in schools\r\n• Training and working with young music artiste and club DJs as youth advocates on RH/HIV/AIDS issues and\r\n• Comics with HIV/AIDS prevention messages.\r\n• Sporting events with prevention messages at break, on tickets, and at HIV/AIDS information booths in and around the venue.\r\n",

This flagship project is being supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the Ministry of Health, who are currently conducting a Randomised Control Trial through IPA (Innovations for Poverty Action) to establish the impact of CHCs on community health. \r\n\r\nOur team is a dedicated group of local development practitioners based out of Zimbabwe and Rwanda, committed to assisting rural and urban communities in developing countries improve their standards of living through safe hygiene, water, sanitation and poverty alleviation, women's empowerment, food security and sustainable livelihoods using Community Health Clubs as a vehicle for change. \r\n\r\nTo this end we provide assistance in all aspects of a CHC programme, including feasibility, design, development of training materials, training of trainers, research, monitoring and evaluation, and are the foremost organization for research, dissemination, advocacy and mentoring in the Community Health Club Approach. \r\n\r\nWe support local and international NGOs, Agencies and particularly strengthening Environmental Health Departments within Ministries of Health in Africa. "description": "AFORD Foundation (Aid for Development) is a local non-governmental organisation operating in the northern region of Ghana, with its headquarters in Tamale. AFORD was founded in 1996 and registered in 1997 by a group of development workers desiring to assist victims of the 1994 ethnic conflict in the northern region to rebuild their lives.\r\n\r\nThe organization has since grown from providing relief to victims of the conflict, to assisting in the general development of communities affected by the conflict.\r\n\r\nAFORD is dedicated to assisting poor and deprived communities and vulnerable groups i.e. women and children to improve their standard of living through their own initiatives and efforts. AFORD works with the communities, identifying their needs and initiating and implementing programs to address those needs. We have supported communities in six (6) districts of the Northern Region namely Tamale, Yendi, Savelugu-Nanton, Tolon-Kumbungu, Central and West Gonja, to find innovative, practical and sustainable ways to apply knowledge and improve their health as a catalyst for growth and development of their livelihoods. We have inspired and enabled marginalized and vulnerable people and communities to find their voice, to make it heard, and to take action to improve their own health and well being. \r\n\r\nVision\r\nPeaceful Northern Ghana where meaningful and sustainable livelihood is attainable by all and poverty and disease are a thing of the past.\r\n\r\nMission\r\nWork in partnership, using participatory communication approaches to improve the health and well-being and eventually the livelihoods of disadvantaged and vulnerable people in communities. \r\n\r\nObjectives\r\n- Strengthen local capacity and support initiatives that enable disadvantaged people to identify and voice their own health and development needs.\r\n- To increase awareness and disseminate information about clean drinking water, good sanitation, and good hygienic behaviour being key determinants of good health.\r\n- Promote attitudes, practices and behaviours that ensure good health and healthy society as a prerequisite for sustainable development in the communities.\r\n- Provide education to the most marginalized people in communities that will enable them demand their social, economic and political rights through lobbying and negotiation with traditional authorities and local government officials\r\n- Provide traditional leaders with capacities for service-oriented leadership and developing consensus in the community around key decisions.\r\n- Promote structures and processes at the local level for collective deliberation between traditional rulers and community members.\r\n\r\n",

"description": "A fair, free and sustainable world – that is what Hivos, the Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation, wants to contribute to. Together with local organisations in developing countries, Hivos strives for a world in which all citizens – both men and women – have equal access to resources and opportunities for development.\r\nHivos is a Dutch non-governmental organisation guided by humanist values. A number of its core values are human dignity and self determination, an aversion to dogmas and totalitarian regimes, and a sense of mutual solidarity. The organisation is committed to poor and marginalised peoples in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It strives for the long-term improvement of their circumstances and for the empowerment of women in particular.\r\n\r\nThe work of Hivos aims at structurally alleviating poverty, with an emphasis on civil society building and on sustainable economic development. The efforts of Hivos are focused on nine themes: financial services and business development; sustainable production; human rights and democratisation; HIV/AIDS; gender, women and development; art and culture; ICT & media; advocacy and communication; and the knowledge programme. You can read more about each one of these themes on this website.\r\n\r\nJoining forces and pooling resources is crucial to achieve the objectives of Hivos. Hivos supports over 800 partner organisations in more than 30 countries through financial means and institutional support as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience. In addition, Hivos works together with a number of organisations, companies and governments in the Netherlands and Europe, and it belongs to various national and international networks. Hivos also conducts advocacy activities itself in the Netherlands, throughout Europe and worldwide.\r\n\r\nHivos is a non-governmental organisation with a societal goal which plays a public role. Hivos is one of the four largest organisations in the ‘co-financing system’ of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Dutch general public, the Dutch government, other sponsors, partners and partner organisations in developing countries are the most important stakeholders.\r\n\r\nHivos is ISO certified; it has the CBF quality mark and is one of the beneficiaries of the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.",

Each year, our global ministry touches the lives of more than 30 million people. \r\n\r\nHere in Kenya, we've been working with communities for over 25 years, touching the lives of more than one million people. \r\n\r\nOur work is concentrated in two areas: community development and disaster relief. \r\n\r\nThis means we work with communities through sustainble and long term projects, providing support and the hope of a future. \r\n\r\nWhen a disaster strikes, ADRA Kenya is also able to provide lifesaving relief through support from our partners and the ADRA network.\r\n\r\nAnother important aspect is that ADRA Kenya works with all people - regardless of their ethnic, political, or religious association. \r\n\r\nThis directive is an outgrowth of a deeply held belief that human life is infinitely valuable and that through humanitarian acts we make known the just, merciful and loving character of God in a world filled with misery and pain or political affiliation.
