During a trip to Thailand they discovered tremendous needs among blind children in that country. Not only because of their physical handicap, but also because of the stigma and rejection they face. Education was not available for blind children. That was the reason to start a foundation.\r\n\r\nThrough the years\r\nThrough the years the small family foundation has grown to a well-organized foundation that has become an important party in helping the blind and visually impaired in developing countries. The foundation found, and still finds, its inspiration in the Gospel that calls upon us to reach out to the poor and the underpriviliged.\r\n\r\nExtended\r\nThe primary mission of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD The Netherlands was to educate blind children. Later on, the field of work broadened. We discoverd that a lot of children become needlessly blind, so prevention and treatment of blindness was added. Also there came a demand to help people who were irreversibly blind. Rehabilitation and low vision services were added. In recent years the focus has switched to inclusive development. That means that the society is equipped for equal participation of persons with a disability.\r\n\r\nLIGHT FOR THE WORLD\r\nIn 2011 Dark & Light joined LIGHT FOR THE WORLD, a European confederation of national development NGOs committed to saving eyesight, improving the quality of life and advocating for the rights of person with disabilities in the underprivileged regions of our world. LIGHT FOR THE WORLD has members in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic and The Netherlands.\r\n\r\nSince 2012, Dark & Light Foundation is called LIGHT FOR THE WORLD The Netherlands. As a confederation member we still have our own identity, mission, vision, board and staff.\r\n\r\nLIGHT FOR THE WORLD The Netherlands supports about 40 projects in 11 countries in Africa and Asia. On a yearly basis about 5 million euro is spent on projects. The office is based in Veenendaal, The Netherlands with about 14 staff. Its current programs focus on three thematic areas: Governance & Human Rights, Sustainable Livelihoods & Health, and Humanitarian Support Services. We also have a business arm through the Private Sector Engagement in Development, where we work with various transnational companies for community relations services, training on human rights framework and various other needs. LITE-Africa advances these thematic areas through:\nProgrammes: LITE-Africa develops and implements high impact, community centered programmes. Each of its programmes builds off past programmes to strengthen, expand, deepen and implement lessons learned. This approach allows beneficiaries to gain maximum returns from its programmes. Its existing programmes add value to its donors because of its wide reach and measurable outcomes; this also allows it to inform the work of policy makers, government officials and oil companies (with respect to corporate social responsibility). In addition to this, it will continue to develop and implement new and innovative programmes in the various areas.\nResearch and Development: The high impact programmes which LITE-Africa implements at the community level are use as a tool to inform policy nationally and internationally. Its expertise has allowed it to produce assessments of existing development policies and practices; these assessments have been key in stimulating national dialogue and strengthening government transparency and accountability. Moreover, its expertise allows it to produce policy briefs, opinion editorials and media content using the Niger Delta as a case study in developing effective community level programmes within and beyond the Niger Delta. Salinization reduces cotton yields by 20-30% on slightly salinized lands, 40-60% on moderately salinized lands, and 80% or more on heavily salinized lands. Agriculture faces declining productivity as high water tables, inappropriate irrigation and under-maintained drainage systems increase salinization and water logging and the fertility of arable land declines. This reduction in the resource base is estimated to cost about $1 billion annually in foregone economic output. 30,000 Ha are being lost to salinity build up each year.\r\nRecognizing the severity of the land degradation scenario, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan issued a decree on October 30, 2007, No. УП-3932 \"On efficient strengthening of land reclamation system”. In these endeavours, LWF Nepal cooperates within its networks that include ecumenical, government and non-government, and community-based partner organisations.\r\n\r\nEstablished in 1984, LWF Nepal is a leading international INGO active in both development and humanitarian works. Originally engaged in sectoral development, then community development projects, LWF Nepal made a major switch in 1997 to empowerment projects. It considers right-based approach as the key to development process. \r\n\r\nLWF Nepal designs and implements all development and emergency works following empowerment and human rights-based approach that builds capacity and competence of poor, oppressed and vulnerable people to collectively achieve improvements for their quality and dignified lives. At the one hand, this approach enhances the rights holders in leading the way through proactive interventions while at the other hand it attempts to make state and other stakeholders accountable in their duties. LWF Nepal works through integrated and collaborative approach to reflect the interdependent and multifaceted nature of poverty, exclusion and injustice on the ground. It tries to ensure that the need for action is coherent and inter-connected. The integrated approach includes deliberate efforts to ensure operational collaboration with other actors and thematic programs that become supplementary and complementary to each other. \r\n\r\nLWF Nepal has three strategic thematic areas;\r\n- Emergency Response and Disaster Risk Management (ERDRM): Thematic objective is to see affected people and communities are prepared for, able to respond effectively to, and recover from all types of disasters and complex emergencies.\r\n- Sustainable Livelihoods: Thematic objective is to demonstrate greater number of poor and marginalized achieves sustainable livelihoods. Specifically, the theme aims to improve food securities of poor and marginalized families, women’s access to and control over financial services and family income, health status, including HIV and AIDS prevention and access to and quality of education improved.\r\n- Peace, Reconciliation and Human Rights: Thematic objective is to achieve marginalized people with whom LWF Nepal works benefit from peaceful and harmonious local environment, the full exercise of their human rights as well as participation in decision making at the local, regional and national context. \r\n\r\nIn additional to above-mentioned priority themes, LWF Nepal implements gender equity, environment and Health and HIV and AIDS related works as cross cutting themes across the agency i.e. program, organizational management and individual behaviors.\r\n", "notes": "", "can_create_projects": false, "enforce_program_projects": false, "use_project_roles": false, "public_iati_file": true, "enforce_2fa": false, "can_become_reporting": false, "iati_prefixes": null, "primary_location": 372, "content_owner": null, "original": null, "password_policy": null, "codelist": null, "internal_org_ids": [] }, { "id": 1174, "total_budgets": [], "recipient_org_budgets": [], "region_budgets": [], "country_budgets": [], "total_expenditures": [], "documents": [], "locations": [ { "id": 1057, "latitude": 8.544795, "longitude": 37.978128, "city": "Wolisso", "state": "", "address_1": "", "address_2": "", "postcode": "", "iati_country": "ET", "country": 12, "location_target": 1174 } ], "logo": "https://storage.googleapis.com/akvo-rsr-production-media-files/cache/8e/fa/8efa781b09d45e0c967075fefb80ec7b.jpg", "latitude": "8.544795", "longitude": "37.978128", "city": "Wolisso", "current_user_permissions": { "can_create_iati_export": false, "can_edit_iati_export": false }, "created_at": "2013-05-01T21:57:12+02:00", "last_modified_at": "2015-02-26T13:56:57.928870+01:00", "name": "Maak Ethiopie Gezonder", "long_name": "Stichting Maak Ethiopie Gezonder", "language": "nl", "organisation_type": "N", "currency": "EUR", "new_organisation_type": 22, "iati_org_id": null, "url": "http://www.maak-ethiopie-gezonder.nl/", "facebook": "", "twitter": "", "linkedin": "", "phone": "", "mobile": "", "fax": "", "contact_person": "Dr J.P.R.Doornbos", "contact_email": "Info@maakethiopiegezonder.nl", "description": "De stichting ‘Maak Ethiopië Gezonder’ is opgericht in september 2011 op initiatief van Hans Doornbos, als gynaecoloog werkzaam in het St. Luke’s Hospital in Ethiopië.
