It was founded as a Farm School in 1939 by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton, a British national who settled in Kenya in the 1920s. In 1950, the School was upgraded to an Agricultural College offering diploma programmes. The Egerton Agricultural College Ordinance was enacted in 1955. In 1979, the Government of Kenya and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded a major expansion of the institution. In 1986, Egerton Agricultural College was gazetted as a constituent college of the University of Nairobi. The following year, 1987, marked the establishment of Egerton University through an Act of Parliament.\r\n\r\nEgerton University has three (3) Campuses and one Campus College. Through sports CREATA has been running two main programs namely; Sports for Development Program, Peace and Governance Program. This year, CREATA is rolling out Football for WASH (F4WASH) program in 60 primary schools in Migori County – a four year program funded by KNVB and UNICEF. \r\n\r\nSports for Development program started as voluntary process where communities were mobilized though football to address the issues of education in Uriri in Migori County. Through the junior sports clubs created, parents came together to form savings associations. Through this savings scheme parents are able to save money for thier children’s school fees, as the organisation boosts their savings through matching funds. Currently we have turnover of about USD 100 per month. In the first year of operating this fund (2012) CREATA was able to fully sponsor 3 children in high school. We are however hoping that this turnover is going to increase and pay for more students. CREATA has establishing 50 sports clubs and about 5 active parents associations. \r\n\r\nIn our Peace and Governance program, CREATA with the funding of IFP Kenya has recently carried out a baseline survey of the knowledge gaps in the communities about the new constitutions and is currently rolling out community training, awareness and forums on the contents of the new constitution. In this project, coaches and sports clubs are the main ambassadors of the message, principles and spirit of the new constitution. \r\n\r\nVision: \r\nCREATA envisages a peaceful, transformed society and a just world where the integrity of creation and human dignity are the pillars for sustainable development. \r\n\r\nMission:\r\nOur aim is to enhance peace, education, human solidarity using sports as a catalyst for community transformation and development. Specifically, we work on four program areas: Agribusiness, Natural Resource Management (NRM), Nature Based Enterprises (NBE) and Climatic Change: All these programs are interlinked and they influence one another. \r\n\r\nThe innovativeness of HSHC programs is demonstrated by being the first organization in Kenya to have produced biodiesel commercially from natural seeds. We have also managed to commercialize a forest based essential oil (cape chestnut) using a unique business model that is meant to maximize local returns and motivate people to conserve the forest. These two has offered a concrete alternative income stream to local farmers in an environment that is increasingly becoming unfriendly to agriculture because of the impact of climatic change.", "notes": "", "can_create_projects": false, "enforce_program_projects": false, "use_project_roles": false, "public_iati_file": true, "enforce_2fa": false, "can_become_reporting": false, "iati_prefixes": null, "primary_location": 289, "content_owner": null, "original": null, "password_policy": null, "codelist": null, "internal_org_ids": [] }, { "id": 4123, "total_budgets": [], "recipient_org_budgets": [], "region_budgets": [], "country_budgets": [], "total_expenditures": [], "documents": [], "locations": [ { "id": 5510, "latitude": 0.672615, "longitude": 35.508039, "city": "NAIROBI", "state": "", "address_1": "P.O BOX 11964, NAIROBI KENYA", "address_2": "00100,GPO", "postcode": "", "iati_country": "KE", "country": 27, "location_target": 4123 } ], "logo": "https://storage.googleapis.com/akvo-rsr-production-media-files/cache/fa/2f/fa2fd4a67815fe43b16a0e7b813787e5.jpg", "latitude": "0.672615", "longitude": "35.508039", "city": "NAIROBI", "current_user_permissions": { "can_create_iati_export": false, "can_edit_iati_export": false }, "created_at": "2017-03-17T13:11:25.357105+01:00", "last_modified_at": "2017-03-20T12:38:04.858305+01:00", "name": "CREAW", "long_name": "Centre for Rights Education and Awareness", "language": "en", "organisation_type": null, "currency": "EUR", "new_organisation_type": 22, "iati_org_id": null, "url": "http://creawkenya.org/ke/", "facebook": "", "twitter": "", "linkedin": "", "phone": "", "mobile": "254 720 357664", "fax": "", "contact_person": "Wangechi Wachira ", "contact_email": "info(at).creaw.org", "description": "The Centre for Rights, Education and Awareness (CREAW) is a registered, feminists, non-profit women’s rights organization with a vision of “A transformed and Just global society”. The Mission of the organization is “To champion, expand and actualize women’s rights”. CREAW has created a niche in championing women rights in Kenya, through the use of bold, innovative and holistic interventions for the realization of women’s rights. \r\n\r\nIn the theory of change, CREAW believes that social transformation can happen through a shifting of social norms and practices that curtail the realization of women’s rights. This is done through legislative and policy advocacy, activism, public awareness, public interest litigation and innovative research. The desired change should be evident in attitudes, knowledge, skills, levels of awareness, behavior and health at personal, family, communal and societal levels. \r\n\r\nIn CREAW’s views, change requires a catalyst. As that catalyst, CREAW sees its role as lying in: Civic engagement, mentorship, dismantling patriarchy, seeking accountability at all levels, awareness raising, working through smart networks and movement building, broadening and deepening knowledge, inclusiveness and constant innovation. CREAW’s values are based on one fundamental principle of “Love’ actualized through it’s values:- Integrity, Professionalism, Passion, Innovativeness and Synergy. FIT is part of a network of organizations initiated by ILO in six African Countries in East Central and West Africa in the early 90s. FIT has identified personnel to be a key resource in development and therefore places Capacity Building at the core of its activities.\r\n\r\nFIT believes that effective services that blend well with the objectives of development agencies, governments and those of target beneficiaries will increase growth and generate employment. Our strategy for sustainable livelihoods is to improve the supply of sustainable development services and skills to communities and SMEs through capacity building and access to markets and or services.\r\n\r\nIn Kenya and most countries in Sub Saharan Africa 80% of the population reside in rural areas with approximately 90% deriving their livelihoods from agriculture and agriculture related activities. The highest poverty levels are also to be found in the rural areas. FIT has therefore concentrated on promoting initiatives in the rural areas aimed at promoting agriculture as a business.\r\n\r\nFIT therefore believes that targeting the poorest people to be able to participate in their own development will spur sustainable poverty alleviation across board. Hence FIT Programmes have focused on promoting initiatives that are cost effective and can be implemented by the people themselves.\r\n\r\nFIT Resources offers exceptional collective knowledge and experience in innovative approaches to agricultural & enterprise development, intervention design, implementation and evaluation, management, and diversification of income resources among the rural poor. Our programmes have helped many entrepreneurs and development organizations to restructure and rationalize and commercialize their activities in order to improve wealth creation leading to improved and sustainable livelihoods.\r\n\r\n\r\nWhat we do\r\n\r\nBroadly, FIT promotes SME development through:\r\n\r\n•\tResearch\r\n•\tDesign and implementation of programmes\r\n•\tProject analysis, design and or management \r\n•\tMonitoring and Evaluation of SME projects\r\n•\tCapacity building for institutions who work with SMEs\r\n\r\nMain Focus\r\n\r\nFIT works with and through:\r\n\r\n•\tMedia houses in the development and implementation of commercially viable media programmes that benefit smallholder farmers mainly in rural communities. FIT builds capacities of Media staff and consultants,\r\n•\tDonors, Governments and trade associations that promote smallholder farmers in specific sub-sectors especially honey and the horticultural sub-sectors. FIT builds capacities of staff and consultants working for governments and donors and,\r\n•\tFinancial institutions that support micro-entrepreneurs in agribusiness. FIT builds capacities of staff and consultants in financial institutions. \r\n\r\n\r\nStandards and Monitoring\r\n\r\nAll FIT projects are subject to continuous monitoring, feedback and regular reviews to ensure that the assignments are completed within prescribed timeframe and emerging issues consistently addressed.\r\n\r\nInstitutional Links\r\n\r\nNetworking is a fundamental component of FIT’s business strategy. FIT was established by ILO as a network of organisations in six East, Central and West Africa. The network provides FIT enormous opportunities experience sharing and support amongst the network members. At the same time, ethnic rivalries continue to hinder development and disrupt lives. However, all this is beginning to change, thanks to a new movement based on community conservation\r\n\r\nHow NRT works\r\nNRT was established in 2004. Its mission is to develop resilient secure peace and conserve natural resources. It does this in a number of ways. It raises funds for the conservancies. It provides them with advice on how to manage their affairs. It supports a wide range of training and helps broker agreements between conservancies and investors. It also monitors performance, providing donors with a degree of oversight and quality assurance.\r\nNRT’s highest governing body is the Council of Elders. The chairs of the conservancies make up the majority, and are joined by institutional members representing county councils, local wildlife forums, the Kenya Wildlife Service and the private sector. The Council guides NRT policy and is responsible for drawing up the bylaws for its operation and administration. It also appoints eight of the 15-member Board of Directors, to whom the chief executive officer is answerable.\r\nNRT is now widely seen as a model of how to support community conservancies. Its success has helped shape new government regulations on establishing, registering and managing community conservancies in Kenya.\r\n\r\nThe role of community conservancies \r\nBy the end of 2014, 27 community conservancies, operating under the umbrella of the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), were managing over 30,000 km² of land and safeguarding the future of a wide range of species, from elephant to Grevy’s zebra, from the endangered hirola to rhinoceros. With more than 60% of Kenya’s wildlife living outside formally protected areas, community conservancies will assume ever greater importance.\r\n\r\nImpact on Wildlife, Environment and Livelihood\r\n\r\nThe conservancies have brought about significant improvements in rangeland management and helped to stabilize, and frequently increase, wildlife populations. The area of land with significant biodiversity under improved conservation management increased from 5,400 km² in 2008 to over 27,400 km² in 2013. Conservancy rangers, supported by NRT, are play¬ing a significant role in tackling ivory poaching and other wild¬life crimes. Just as importantly, the conservancies have helped to bring peace and security to areas which have been plagued by violent conflict. \r\nWith the help of NRT, the conservancies created over 800 per¬manent jobs, and a further 830 casual jobs, in 2013, and im¬proved the welfare of a significant proportion of the 320,000 people whom they serve. They have generated millions of dol¬lars of investment, brought much-needed services to remote areas – for example, over 1,810 young people benefited from school and university bursaries in 2013 – and helped to change the mindsets of marginalized communities, who are now in¬creasingly willing to take charge of their own destinies.\r\n", "notes": "", "can_create_projects": false, "enforce_program_projects": false, "use_project_roles": false, "public_iati_file": true, "enforce_2fa": false, "can_become_reporting": true, "iati_prefixes": null, "primary_location": 2612, "content_owner": null, "original": null, "password_policy": null, "codelist": null, "internal_org_ids": [] }, { "id": 2358, "total_budgets": [], "recipient_org_budgets": [], "region_budgets": [], "country_budgets": [], "total_expenditures": [], "documents": [], "locations": [ { "id": 2474, "latitude": 0.016667, "longitude": 37.066667, "city": "Nanyuki", "state": "", "address_1": "P.O Box 764", "address_2": "", "postcode": "", "iati_country": "KE", "country": 27, "location_target": 2358 } ], "logo": "https://storage.googleapis.com/akvo-rsr-production-media-files/cache/de/5e/de5e61a6787d6f7f19ad2930edd78ea6.jpg", "latitude": "0.016667", "longitude": "37.066667", "city": "Nanyuki", "current_user_permissions": { "can_create_iati_export": false, "can_edit_iati_export": false }, "created_at": "2014-10-27T14:02:04+01:00", "last_modified_at": "2015-07-20T16:39:49.492183+02:00", "name": "Laikipia Wildlife Forum", "long_name": "Laikipia Wildlife Forum", "language": "en", "organisation_type": "N", "currency": "EUR", "new_organisation_type": 22, "iati_org_id": null, "url": "http://www.laikipia.org/index.php", "facebook": "", "twitter": "", "linkedin": "", "phone": "+254 202166626", "mobile": "+254 726 500260", "fax": "", "contact_person": "Dr Mordecai Ogada", "contact_email": "communications@laikipia.org", "description": "The Laikipia Wildlife Forum is a dynamic, membership led conservation organisation supporting, coordinating and facilitating pan-Laikipia conservation and natural resource management. Its activities focus on capacity-building voluntary community resource persons, providing a variety of (group) counselling- and psycho-education services whilst also planning to provide trainings for a fee.\r\n\r\nOriginally started and run by the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) in 1993 as ‘Kitale AIDS Programme’, in December 2009 the programme was registered as a national Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) separate from the Catholic Church. Whilst implementing its HIV preventive activities the urgent need to address major underlying and related societal problems became apparent. \r\nThis lead to efforts towards re-branding. In April 2017 KAP is finalizing its process for name change with relevant Kenyan Authorities: from ‘Kitale AIDS Programme (KAP)’ to ‘Kitale Community Advancement Programme (KAP)’.\r\n\r\nKAP’s main objective is “To facilitate, promote and create innovative and sustainable educational and counselling approaches to mitigate the impact of societal breakdown, especially violence, abuse, trauma, addictions, HIV/AIDS and related problems and environmental degradation”.\r\nIts main areas of interest are (A) Trauma Management, Prevention and Peace, (B ) Addiction Prevention, Community-Based Treatment & Referral, (C) HIV/AIDS Behaviour Interventions and (D) Comprehensive Recovery for Extra Vulnerable Youths. Care for the environment is integrated in all components.\r\nKAP sees societal cohesion, community ownership, personal responsibility, true commitment and therefore true voluntarism as vital prerequisites for healing and defeating violence, trauma, addiction, HIV and restoring environmental damage. KAP’s work is based on a strong and practical spirituality with an ecumenical and interfaith character.\r\n\r\nBetween 2002 - 2016 KAP trained and followed-up 3,885 volunteers with 70% still active 8 months after training with at least 1 activity per week. KAP has 14 staffs and 25 community trainers. \r\n\r\nKAP’s activities show to impact people deeply and lead to sincere efforts towards healing, peace and addiction-free and/or safe(r) behaviours. These include reduction of participants’ risky, violent or disruptive relationships and addictions, improved communication with partners and others, addressing of different sorts of stigma, ethnic imbalance and reconciliation between warring parties, and also increase in Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing, -treatment and addressing of (the many) STIs, use of medical (HIV) treatment and preventive tools. Participants say that they are much helped by KAP’s psychological counseling sessions. Usually these concern extremely difficult domestic situations of neglect, loneliness, violence, (gang) rapes, including of young children, and broken families and relationships.
