"description": "Nosim Women Organization is a local NGO in Kenya. It is located in Kajiado town, a distance of 80kms from Nairobi. It was registered in 2001 under the NGO Act (1990) and has been active in Kajiado central district since then. NOSIM is led by women from the marginalized Maasai community and aims to counter the negative cultural practices that affect health and gender relations within the Maasai community. The organization focuses on cultural issues like female genital mutilation (FGM), human/children’s rights, water and sanitation, livelihoods, education (especially the girl child) and HIV&AIDS.\r\n\r\nThe primary purpose of NOSIM is to empower women and children in the Maasai pastoral community to identify and achieve their own development initiatives and promote decision making. The organization’s development approach is described as based on participation, women empowerment, local capacity building/training, gender equality, advocacy, sustainability and accountability. The organization considers the development of strong linkages with the community as a priority in the attainment of its programmatic and organizational goals. The organization has established strong linkages with women groups and other organized social groups. \r\n\r\nNOSIM’s vision is described as ‘An empowered Maasai woman and girl child enjoying equal opportunities to enable them to maximize life’s opportunities’. Their mission is ‘to create awareness and sensitization to the Maasai girl child and woman which will empower them to operate in an enabling environment’. \r\n\r\nWASH is one of the four strategic pillars in the work of NOSIM, besides Livelihoods, Health and Education. NOSIM’s activities on WASH specifically consist of borehole drilling, extension of pipelines, establishment of water drinking points, introduction of hand washing with soap, and introduction and increasing of latrine use. They address WASH mainly from an institutional perspective, focusing on schools. \r\n\r\nNOSIM has a good working relationship with the government. The government of Kenya provides technical support to NOSIM. In sensitization seminars, relevant ministries provide experts in different professions e.g. health and education officers who facilitate the seminars. The government also provides licensing for projects e.g. borehole drilling and construction activities. Supervision of seminars and projects are also done the Government officers. \r\n",

"description": "The NSWP was established as an informal alliance in 1990 by a group of sex worker rights activists working within sex work projects around the world. Over the years, NSWP has conducted activities in partnership with other organisations, and the principle of the participation of sex workers in policy and programme development has been accepted at many levels. Despite lacking resources and recognition, the NSWP has influenced policy and built leadership among sex workers and facilitated the development of regional and national networks of sex workers and sex work projects. Significantly, NSWP participation in the global response to HIV/AIDS was largely responsible for the term 'sex worker' replacing 'prostitute'. More than mere political correctness, this shift in language had the important effect of moving global understandings of sex work toward a labour framework which signposts solutions to many of the problems faced by sex workers. It also questions the stigma of sex work and represents greater recognition of sex workers as rights bearers, with the capacity to make a difference. As a result of NSWP advocacy, female, male and transgender sex workers have presented the case for protection of their human rights at international forums such as international and regional conferences on AIDS, the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing 1995, UNGASS, the UNAIDS Programme Co-ordinating Board and the Global Fund consultations. The NSWP successfully lobbied for wording of the UN convention against trafficking in persons (the Palermo Protocol) to ensure that trafficking is defined as including force or coercion. NSWP, along with its regional networks, was also successful in urging UNAIDS to reconsider its 2007 policy guidelines on HIV and sex work.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the NSWP, through its member organisations, published Making Sex Work Safe and a regular journal (Research for Sex Work); maintains global and regional listservs; and manages a website containing some of the most influential and important work on HIV and sex work. The NSWP’s work has been widely acknowledged and NSWP regional networks and members have received various awards.\r\n\r\nFollowing an organisational review completed in 2007, which recommended the NSWP formalise its membership structure, becoming a network of organisations (rather than individuals) and establishing a secretariat in the global north, the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP) registered as a not-for-profit private company limited by guarantee, with its registered office in Scotland, in October 2008.\r\n\r\nThe Global Network of Sex Work Projects exists to uphold the voice of sex workers globally and connect regional networks advocating for the rights of female, male and transgender sex workers. It advocates for rights based health and social services, freedom from abuse and discrimination, and self determination for sex workers. \r\n\r\nNSWP members are united by common core beliefs and values and are committed to: \r\n- Acceptance of sex work as work\r\n- Opposition to all forms of criminalisation of sex work (including sex workers, clients, management and others related to sex workers)\r\n- Support for self-organisation and self-determination of sex workers\r\n\r\nNSWP is led by sex workers; member organisations are therefore expected to be sex worker-led and to ensure the meaningful participation of sex workers in every level of their organisation. Regions are expected to ensure the voices of female, male and transgender sex workers are heard within their region as well as giving voice to sex workers living with HIV and those using drugs. \r\n\r\nAdditionally all members must be committed to challenging stigma and discrimination, to defending human rights, to challenging policies and practices that negatively affect the lives and health of sex workers, and to promoting rights based services and policies. \r\n \r\nThe NSWP aims are to:\r\n- provide practical information and opportunities for information sharing among organisations and projects which provide services to men, women, and transsexuals who work in the sex industry.\r\n- raise awareness of the health and welfare needs of sex workers. \r\n- advocate at regional and global level for policies and action, which further the human rights of sex workers. These rights include the right to health and a safe working environment free from abuse, violence, and discrimination. \r\n- develop and maintain links between service providers, sex worker organisations and relevant international institutions and agencies. \r\n- facilitate opportunities for the voices of sex workers to be heard in relevant international forums. \r\n\r\nThe NSWP conducts a mix of pro-active and re-active policy advocacy to support human rights and evidence based approaches to female, male and transgendered sex workers and strengthening sex worker communities. The work is arranged around: \r\na) Communications and advocacy. Information relevant to sex workers human rights and health is not sufficiently accessible, particularly for those who do not read English. The NSWP summarises, translates and distributes relevant information to it members and beyond. This is particularly important for places where there are no organised sex workers groups or rights based sex work programmes. Five languages have currently been prioritised - Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. NSWP advocacy is supported by policy analysis, research and consultation with members. \r\nb) Building Capacity and Solidarity - Training and skills building for and among sex worker organisations and leaders is achieved by developing and providing tools, training, space and support on issues such as human rights, health interventions, law and policy, ethics and technologies.",

"description": "aandi, which in Sanskrit means a new beginning; is one of the largest and fastest growing social sector organisations in India working to make poverty history.\r\nFounded in 1998 our work has 3 broad sectors: Child Rights, Safe Drinking Water and Sustainable Livelihoods. We also have a research arm that takes up action researches and other field based trials to check out innovations and their potential to positively influence policy. Our ideology revolves around building sustainable models within the social sector that deliver critical services efficiently and equitably to underserved communities.\r\n\r\nIt is our belief that in a globalised world for any social activity to be effective the involvement and contribution of all stakeholders direct or indirect plays an important role in making it responsive, responsible and sustainable for the communities in question. In this effort we work together with governments, communities, corporates and civil society institutions to channelise their collective resources – financial, technical and human – into creating new approaches to solve widespread poverty-related issues across the country. The aim is to make the most efficient and equitable use of every rupee spent in the sector.\r\n\r\nThis has been our journey since 1998 from when these public-private partnerships have helped us create sustainable, affordable solutions to long-pending development problems of the country: ensuring the rights of a child , sustainable livelihood opportunities for the underserved and safe drinking water & sanitation to rural households and so on.\r\n\r\nNaandi with a team of 300 + employees and hundreds of community workers is presently working in nine states: Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Nagaland, Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra touching the lives of more than 4 million underserved people.",

"description": "The Nederland-Batam foundation (Neba) is a small Dutch-based development aid organization. Since 1987 the foundation offers social and medical aid to underprivileged people in Indonesia. We do so because we think that everybody is entitled to an independent and humane life and good quality healthcare and socio-economic development of underprivileged are essential to achieve this. \r\n\r\nThe Nederland-Batam foundation aims to contribute to the independence and self-reliance of underprivileged so that they can shape their own lives and achieve their human rights. And because independence and self-reliance are our core-values Neba realizes its activities through cooperation with local Indonesian organizations.\r\n\r\nNeba is active in 3 main areas in Indonesia; Batam and surrounding islands, the Jakarta/Bandung area on Java island and the province of North-Sulawesi. \r\n\r\nOn Batam we support HIV/AIDS and maternal health related projects.
