"description": "Slums are areas full of potential. Almost half of the urban world population is living in slums and they want to progress in life. They provide a wealth of creativity and talent and are potential consumers.\r\n\r\n‘Smart solutions for slums’ is what Cordaid is working on. We connect the people living in slums with companies, authorities, knowledge centers and investors. It is our aim to work jointly toward homes, electricity, sanitation, clean drinking water, waste disposal and safety. This should result in both livable and sustainable neighborhoods.\r\n\r\nCordaid enables creativity and ideas to be converted into actions for the future. To achieve a cost-effective and future-proof strategy, Cordaid works together with companies and other stakeholders.\r\n\r\nCordaid sees potential opportunities in slums. It has done so for many years in seven of the biggest cities in Latin America and Africa: San Salvador, Port-au-Prince, Guatemala City, Cape Town, Nairobi, Kisumu and Addis Ababa.",

"description": "Why are women barely playing a role in the reconstruction of their countries?\r\n\r\nWomen are crucial contributors to their societies. They are the ones who cross ethnic and religious borders and who see to the healthy development of their children. They are the ones to advocate for education, employment and new opportunities for young people.\r\n\r\nPeace can only last when women are also involved.\r\nYou would think it speaks for itself.\r\n\r\nIn reality, the situation is different. Women are not treated equally; not by their families, their communities or their governments. They are almost virtually absent during peace talks; only in one in ten cases are women present at the negotiation table. Their interests are neither well-received nor are they acted on.\r\n\r\nCordaid supports the process of uniting local women and provides them with national and international stages - from Afghanistan to Colombia, Sudan to Sri Lanka - to consolidate their positions. Together they define their roles as well as strengthen their positions.",

"description": "Overcome poverty and shape one's own life: this is what the German Development Service (DED) works for. It operates worldwide with organisations in countries where people suffer from poverty and its many consequences on nutrition, health, and the opportunity to participate in social and political life. DED's goal is to improve these people's lives fundamentally. As a public-benefit organisation, DED cooperates with local partners. DED technical advisers are experienced and committed experts on limited-term assignments, who work with local active organisations to induce positive change. DED also works with local experts and specialists to ensure the sustainability of this development process, thereby strengthening local competences and partner organisations' responsibility and initiative, so that local people can shape their future themselves in the long term. DED technical advisers in turn benefit from the knowledge, experience and contacts of their local colleagues. This knowledge is of inestimable value for effective cooperation.\r\nDED also offers young people the opportunity to gain experience worldwide. The Young Professionals Programme is a scholarship scheme which enables young people embarking on a career and university graduates to work in a project during a one-year stay in a DED partner country, to get to know how DED and its partners work, and to develop social competence for living and working in another culture. The Young Professionals Programme is intended to encourage them and, at the same time, enhance their subsequent opportunities to work in development cooperation institutions in Germany and abroad. DED also offers young people aged 18 to 23 the opportunity to participate in \"weltwärts\" – the international volunteer programme of the German Federal Government.\r\nDED operates on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). With its nuanced range of personnel and services, DED is recognised worldwide as one of the leading European development services for personnel cooperation. Since its formation in 1963, more than 16,000 technical advisers have worked on reducing poverty through sustainable development. Currently, some 2 000 technical advisers are working in 48 countries.",

"description": "The project called DHMIS, involves a variety of stakeholders. It is centered around the City Medical Officers (CMO) office, The African Inland Church of Tanzania (AICT), The Evangelical, Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), the Roman Catholic Church all in Mwanza. The Regional Health Director of the Christian Social Services Commission (CSSC) acts as project Chairperson.\r\n\r\nThe main reason which triggered for this project was lack of accurate and timely data in the health sector. This is a national problem. During the Round Table workshop in 2005, health information systems were identified as an appropriate way to improve the quality of health data and to reinforce the management of the health system. This problem is more severe for health facilities owned by civil society. Without proper data, proper analysis would be impossible and hence automatically affect the quality of decisions to be made. Also without proper data keeping, access to the secretarial basket funding is limited and the interventions of the Civil Society Organizations (CSO) remains relatively small. Furthermore, a data driven health sector is more responsive to the end users, more accurate in its interventions, more accountable and fosters a learning environment that would promote the analysis of data closer to the points of data generation. This reduces the reliance on centralized knowledge generation and intervention planning. At national level the need for appropriate health information is recognized and included in the Health Systems Strengthening Program III. This is further elaborated in an eHealth strategy. In DHMIS, the national government is involved through the CMO and RMO. Staff from MoH will be invited to visit the project. A former visit resulted in substantial support.\r\nICT has been identified as a critical tool in development today and has vast potentials in improving the delivery of health services. The District Health Management Information Systems (DHMIS) in Mwanza envisages the establishment of an adequate network to facilitate quick and quality Health Management Information System covering the main health units and programs in the region. The project has previously supported the building of Health Management Information Systems at various facilities that are owned and managed by the three biggest Faith Based Organizations and the Government operating in Mwanza; namely DHMIS project is designed to assist the facilities and parent organizations to manage their operations better. In addition, this project has built the capacity of the CMOs office to receive, store, analyze and re-transmit vital health data both to the higher administrative levels of the government as well as downward to the data generators. These various information systems were then woven together with a simple, yet robust communication platform (AfyaPro) with which data can be shared instantaneously.",

"description": "Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) was globally established in 2002 with a mission: to connect youth with technology; to build human capacity; to instill an entrepreneurial way of thinking, and to provide the tools for community-led economic and social development. Combining the power of young entrepreneurs, technology, and innovative community solutions, DOT programs stimulate economic growth and create a framework for community development to secure the future success of youth, with a particular focus on young women.\r\n\r\nDOT operations in Ethiopia were established in 2006. DOT's work toward alleviating poverty and eradicating inequality instills a spirit of development and progress among its young population. DOT provides the training and the skills to allow young Ethiopians to harness their potential and find opportunities to improve their livelihoods.\r\n\r\nDOT Ethiopia Programs\r\nIn Ethiopia, DOT currently implements ReachUp! and StartUp! programs. Carefully selected interns deliver these programs in chosen communities to thousands of keen participants, who are intent on bettering their lives with newly-acquired life skills and technology competencies.\r\n\r\nDOT Ethiopia program reaches out to vulnerable youth and young women looking to find employment and/or private sector opportunities. Up to date, DOT Ethiopia has directly engaged over 9,000 national youth and women with very minimal resources to apply relevant Information Communication Technologies (ICT) to gain business and life skills to improve their access to market and employment opportunities. Since its inception, DOT Ethiopia has established vital partnerships with international organizations, local government offices, education institutions, local community-based organizations (CBO), associations, and microfinance institutions to better serve vulnerable and resource-poor youth. It is through these partnerships that DOT selects its beneficiaries, adding valued services to the services already provided by its partner organizations to their targeted beneficiaries.\r\n\r\nOver the last few years, DOT has learned that its unique methodology is well-suited for local youth as it successfully tailors to their local needs. Youth are an important target group for economic growth as they have an ability to learn quickly and can influence poverty reduction for future generations. DOT believes that its short-term investment in youth human capital development is a long-term poverty relief strategy for generations to come.",

"description": "Dalit is a Bengali word, stands for “oppressed”. Many also decode Dalit as untouchable. Dalit people have not been socially included in mainstream due to their so called “impure” profession e.g. skinning, tanning, shoe polishing, sweeping, sewerage cleaning, burying of dead bodies, saloon, drum beating, washing, etc. Literacy rate among the Dalits is about 25% which is far behind from the national average.\r\n\r\n“Dalit” to “DALIT” as an Organization\r\nThe organization has been named “DALIT” to represent the Dalit and indigenous community people. DALIT got registration from NGO Affairs Bureau (N.1374) in 1999. Some Dalit people were the visionary-dreamers of DALIT and autobiography of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar was their immense inspiration. DALIT approaches to the Dalit community with employment opportunities, health and education facilities. Actually DALIT is a one of the non profit organization, working for empowerment of socially excluded groups to lend a hand them to meet up their basic needs. Human resource development and exploring potentiality of the Dalit indigenous community people are the ultimate goal and objective of the organization. DALIT started its Water, Sanitation, Arsenic Mitigation and Hygiene Promotion in 2003 through community led ‘integrated, participatory, empowering’ approach. DALIT’s goal is to provide sustainable and integrated water, sanitation, arsenic mitigation and hygiene promotion services in the remote rural areas and break the contamination cycle of unsanitary latrines, contaminated water and unsafe hygiene practices. The program aims to ensure access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene promotion services for the disadvantaged communities in remote rural areas of Khulna, Jessore and Satkhira districts with the donor support. The core of the program is the CBOs as main actor at community level to assess existing water and sanitation situation of the entire village and identify issues that need urgent action. They select sites for community water sources, collect contribution money and monitor usage and maintenance of community water points and latrines. To strengthen the capacity of CBOs, DALIT provided various training for their capacity development in a way to achieve national targets as well as Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) sets the target of achieving 100% sanitation and safe water coverage by 2015. \r\n\r\nDALIT interventions are to improve the health of the disadvantaged population in an affordable, equitable and sustainable way in reducing the burden of disease, relieve human suffering and ensure considerable economic benefits, with particular focus on reducing child morbidity and mortality. Mention that hand washing alone can reduce mortality by 42%. Among the constraints to improve water and sanitation are the lack of hygienic knowledge and practices, insufficient and inadequate financial resources, and inappropriate adaptation of drinking water sources and sanitation systems. The community led approaches in the ASWASH program may help to conceptualize the water and sanitation situation, leading towards a solution overcoming these constraints. It will help the community to understand the necessity of integrating safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices, which might be a more effective measure than providing only complimentary hardware.\r\nThe situation of rural sanitation, hygiene and water supply in Bangladesh indicates that 32% people use sanitary latrines, 9% people open defecating, 20% people use hanging latrines, 7% children with diarrhea, 15% safe disposal of faces of children of under 5, and 72%* people have access to safe drinking water. "description": "Making water and sanitation available in poor countries is a problem massive in size and urgency, hundreds of millions of units are necessary right now. \r\nOnly Gandhi's solution -self-reliance- can provide this, and this with the means of the poor only. If the billions of rural poor only have a bush knife as tool, then the water pump they may need should be made with only that bush knife and resources available to them. \r\n\r\nIf these billions of rural poor would be motivated by the quality of an adequate design made available to them they would put this information to practice. \r\n\r\nHow with such limited means crucial quality can be achieved is mission and task of Foundation \"Demotech, design for self-reliance\". Demotech finds such solutions by tenacious research in its laboratory and during field work, Experience gained is shared with for whom it matters in its website, video-reporting and published papers.\r\n\r\nThe Demotech Rope Pump design from 1975, first field tested in 1976 in Burkina Faso, embodied many of the required qualities for unsupported self-sustained use at the Bottom of the Pyramid. Demotech and others have reported where, when and how this happened. \r\nPopularity of the Rope Pump design induced some NGO's to partly subsidized providing of this water pump, often with a more centralized manufacture with industrial means. In practice this led to the same failure of other industrial produced hand pumps due to difficulty to maintain and find spare parts while numbers of pumps realized where a fraction of set targets.\r\n\r\nOn our website you will find many projects that are designed with a similar approach. Examples are, Hydraulic Rampumps, Furniture, Administration system, Sanitation, Transport, Engineering for the Bottom of the Pyramid work shops, etc. \r\n\r\nAgain Demotech sees it as its task to generate, field test and publish a design for a hand driven water pump that fulfills all criteria for rapid self-reliant and self-sustained application required for reaching Millennium Development Goals. Design targets are set higher then in 1975. Functional performance to be equal or better then existing hand pumps to depth of 70 meters. Cost within the reach of the extreme poor (<1$/p/day). Made with local materials and tools only, according to local craft practice. Self-explaining setup and construction limits need for training to demonstration and peer-to-peer spread of knowledge. \r\n\r\nBench marks of success will be immediate un-invited, un-subsidized copying of the water pump where demonstrated and needed. A bench mark that takes more time to set is development of income generation by manufacture and local selling of the rope pump. A third bench mark is the occurrence of change in life-style because of easier access to water. \r\n\r\nRe-design is Demotech's job. Demotech explores and puts to practice the possibilities of a different approach to development, which takes into account the social construction of technology and critically deals with the process of their innovation and implementation. Demotech treats people as creators of development and active collaborators in the process of shaping technology.\r\n\r\nAll the work that it takes to realize such bench marks describes best how our organization Demotech functions and performs: all but easy going!",

"description": " Dhaka WASA (Water Supply & Sewerage Authority) was established in the year 1963 as an independent organization, under the East Pakistan ordinance XIX. In 1989, the drainage system of Dhaka city also handed over to DWASA from DPHE. Again in the year 1990, Water, Drainage & Sanitation service of Narayangonj city handed over to DWASA.\r\n\r\n Based on the tremendous geographical expansion and population growth over the last two decades, DWASA's activities has been reorganized by Dhaka WASA Act, 1996 and according to this act, DWASA it is operating as a service oriented commercial organization. Now, the jurisdiction of Dhaka WASA is more than 360 Sq. km and the population is about 125 million. \r\n\r\n At present the service area of DWASA extended to Mirpur and Uttara in the North and to Narayanganj in the South. For better operation, maintenance and customer care, the total service area of DWASA is divided into 11 geographic zones, which includes 10 in Dhaka City and 1 in Narayanganj. There is an office for each zone and this office carries out the responsibilities of engineering operation as well as revenue activities. So that respected consumers can obtain all possible services and counseling from one place.",
