The Department forms a meeting place for students, staff, and researchers from Ancient history, Archaeology, and History. Among our staff we have experts on different periods in the history of man, such as the European Bronze Age, ancient Greece and Rome, the Nordic Middle Ages, pre-industrial peasant society as well as social and political processes in modern times.\r\nThe three subjects (Ancient History, Archaeology and History) offer their own courses from the undergraduate level up to the degree of Ph.D. at the same time as they are part of interdisciplinary education programmes. The Department also offers a programme for future history teachers.\r\nThe department of Historical Studies is host of the prioritised research area Critical Heritage Studies – an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty project with the aim of strengthening cultural heritage research at the University as well as the cooperative work with academic and non-academic heritage institutions locally and globally. \r\nFor more information about UGOT : link to UGOT partner page on NEARCH website\r\n",

"description": "The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC, founded in 1939) is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe (it employs more than 14,000 persons devoted to scientific research in the main fields of knowledge). Belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, its main objective is to develop and promote research that will help bring about scientific and technological progress, and it is prepared to collaborate with Spanish and foreign entities in order to achieve this aim.\r\nThe Institute of Heritage Sciences (Incipit) was created by the CSIC in January 2010 by resolution of its Board of Trustees. Felipe Criado-Boado, as Research Professor of CSIC, is its director. The Incipit has, in fact, a 20-year history and a complex institutional evolution. It started in 1991 as a Research Group devoted to Landscape Archaeology, in the University of Santiago de Compostela. Since 2001 joined the Spanish National Research Council as Landscape Archaeology Laboratory and within the Institute of Galician Studies “Padre Sarmiento”. In 2009, after the conception of a scientific project focused on the interdisciplinary study of heritage, the group is reformulated as Heritage Laboratory (LaPa) to approach and address the problem of how heritage is constituted and valued from a broader and deeply interdisciplinar research project. Finally, in year 2010, it was incorporated into a new research institute of CSIC created at that point and settled in Santiago de Compostela.\r\nFor more information about Incipit : link to Incipit partner page on NEARCH website",

"description": "The Van Eyck is a post academic institute that has turned into an international multiform organization for fine art, design, and reflection. We are a multidisciplinary institute that furthers experiment, research, study, production and exchange. In our institute promising artists, designers, thinkers and curators are given the time and space that is needed to develop their talents, to discover as yet unexplored perspectives and delve into deeper layers of their selves.\r\nAs of 2013 we have embarked on a new course, guided by our institutional compass. The rose of the compass is the comprehensive idea of porosity and fluidity; the four compass points encompass openness as well as connection, self-guidance as well as cooperation. In real terms, this means that the Van Eyck is a welcoming meeting-place where fluid connections exist between institute and surrounding world, between the various art disciplines and between the fields of art and science. The energy flows that are thus generated trigger myriad possibilities and bring the development of talent to a peak. \r\nFor more information about JVE : link to JVE partner page on NEARCH website",

"description": "Solidaridad is an international organization dedicated to responsible food production to feed the growing world population and to providing the world with an alternative to fossil fuels like oil and gas.\r\n\r\nSolidaridad is convinced that the agricultural sector can produce more efficiently so that it will be able to feed the world population in 2050, as well as supply energy and plastic to the industry. That is why Solidaridad is investing in enterprising farmers in developing countries and putting emphasis on the improvement of their land use, so that production can increase while at the same time harm to people and the environment is decreased. \r\n\r\nMining and industry need to switch to a responsible means of production. Worker rights are respected and the environment is preserved for future generations, keeping intact its potential.\r\n\r\nSolidaridad focuses on the production chains that matter worldwide and where changes have great impact: coffee, tea, cacao, fruit, textiles, cotton, soy, palm oil, sugar cane, gold and cattle breeding. - See more at: http://solidaridadnetwork.org/aboutus#sthash.WLXU0RrI.dpuf",

"description": "Although dance is very international and every culture has its own traditional dances, for most children around the world dancing remains just a dream. Parents rather want their children to earn money at young age, than letting them enjoy their childhood. Giving them a chance to dance is a wonderful experience to escape from the hard reality of life. \r\nWe want to give children around the world a fabulous time they will never forget! Chance to Dance aims at dance performance projects in different countries where children are in disadvantaged situations. We emphasize that it is necessary to work for at least one month with a group of children. Starting with playful basic dance classes, we will work towards the final goal: a spectacular show for public at the end of the project. The size of the group can range from 20-80 children. The show will be as professional as possible, depending on the local situation. \r\nWe design and provide costumes for all the children, if possible in cooperation with local tailors We will arrange a stage, lights, a sound system and a great ambiance for the audience, also using local resources. The final show is a very important part of the project giving the children the unforgettable experience of achieving a goal. They will have to remember and combine all the movements, counts, orders, musicality and above this all the confidence to perform in front of an audience. The children will become stars for a moment! \r\nTo make this happen, the community plays an important role. We involve as many people as possible. Teachers, parents and local craftsmen can help us with costumes, lights, sound, building of stage, catering and much more. This way a Chance to Dance project will not only give the children but the whole community an experience never to forget!",

A few years later the collection was moved to the king's palace in the centre of the city and in 1931 it was officially installed in the present building. The original collection was expanded, starting in 1922, by the first excavations of the Délégation Archéologique Française in Afghanistan (DAFA). Through the years, other archaeological delegations have added their finds to the museum until today the collection spans fifty millenniums: Prehistoric, Classical, Buddhist, hindu and Islamic art and stands as one of the greatest testimonies of antiquity that the world has inherited. "description": "Townhouse was established in downtown Cairo in 1998 as an independent, non-profit art space with a goal of making contemporary art and culture accessible to all without compromising creative practice. Townhouse supports artistic work in a wide range of media through exhibitions, residencies for artists, curators and writers, educational initiatives and outreach programs.\r\n\r\nBy establishing local and international relationships, as well as diversifying both the practitioners and audiences of contemporary art, Townhouse aims to support and expand the knowledge, appreciation and practice of contemporary arts in Egypt and the region. \r\n\r\nTownhouse is located in downtown Cairo's bustling car mechanic's district, off of Tahrir Square. The exhibitions program features over 12 exhibitions a year, hosted in the 650-square-meter Factory Space and the First Floor Gallery in the main building. Exhibitions feature the work of young emerging artists alongside those who are internationally recognized. Many local artists with early shows at Townhouse have gone on to exhibit worldwide.\r\n\r\nTownhouse has initiated numerous large-scale events, beginning with the city-wide Nitaq Festival in 2000. PhotoCairo, the first festival in Egypt exclusively dedicated to photography and video, was launched in 2002.\r\n\r\nSince its inception, Townhouse has worked to make the arts accessible to different groups of society, whilst using them as a powerful medium for integration and understanding. Our Outreach Program offers a number of arts workshops for adults and children, with participants coming from all over Cairo, including those with special needs and from marginalized communities.\r\n\r\nTownhouse collaborates with institutions and arts professionals both regionally and internationally to create exhibitions, share resources, and facilitate artist exchanges.",

"description": "Walking for Water is the International variant of the Dutch Wandelen voor Water campaign.\r\n\r\nWalking for Water is an awareness and fundraising initiative which takes place around World Water Day (22 March). School children aged 10-13 are sponsored by friends and family to walk 6 kilometres, while carrying 6 litres of water in a backpack. With two important results: kids learn about global water issues and raise funds to help solve them. Lectures by teachers and external guest on the importance of clean drinking water and proper sanitation ensure the educational nature of the event.\r\n\r\nThe experience helps kids understand what many children their age in developing countries must do every single day, often at the expense of being in school. It is a motivating and effective community event to engage the younger generation on an important topic and teach them that they can make a difference in the lives of others.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\nThe concept of Walking for Water was pioneered in the Netherlands by NGO Aqua for All, and has grown in popularity every year since it started 8 years ago. Results have been impressive — in 2010, 18.000 children from over 400 schools Walked for Water, raising €1.2 million for water projects around the world. Schools choose a project to fund with the money raised, and see the project unfold online.",
