"description": "The project called DHMIS, involves a variety of stakeholders. It is centered around the City Medical Officers (CMO) office, The African Inland Church of Tanzania (AICT), The Evangelical, Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), the Roman Catholic Church all in Mwanza. The Regional Health Director of the Christian Social Services Commission (CSSC) acts as project Chairperson.\r\n\r\nThe main reason which triggered for this project was lack of accurate and timely data in the health sector. This is a national problem. During the Round Table workshop in 2005, health information systems were identified as an appropriate way to improve the quality of health data and to reinforce the management of the health system. This problem is more severe for health facilities owned by civil society. Without proper data, proper analysis would be impossible and hence automatically affect the quality of decisions to be made. Also without proper data keeping, access to the secretarial basket funding is limited and the interventions of the Civil Society Organizations (CSO) remains relatively small. Furthermore, a data driven health sector is more responsive to the end users, more accurate in its interventions, more accountable and fosters a learning environment that would promote the analysis of data closer to the points of data generation. This reduces the reliance on centralized knowledge generation and intervention planning. At national level the need for appropriate health information is recognized and included in the Health Systems Strengthening Program III. This is further elaborated in an eHealth strategy. In DHMIS, the national government is involved through the CMO and RMO. Staff from MoH will be invited to visit the project. A former visit resulted in substantial support.\r\nICT has been identified as a critical tool in development today and has vast potentials in improving the delivery of health services. The District Health Management Information Systems (DHMIS) in Mwanza envisages the establishment of an adequate network to facilitate quick and quality Health Management Information System covering the main health units and programs in the region. The project has previously supported the building of Health Management Information Systems at various facilities that are owned and managed by the three biggest Faith Based Organizations and the Government operating in Mwanza; namely DHMIS project is designed to assist the facilities and parent organizations to manage their operations better. In addition, this project has built the capacity of the CMOs office to receive, store, analyze and re-transmit vital health data both to the higher administrative levels of the government as well as downward to the data generators. These various information systems were then woven together with a simple, yet robust communication platform (AfyaPro) with which data can be shared instantaneously.",

"description": "The project:\r\nOver 1 billion people, mainly on the African continent, do not have access to clean drinking water. In the next 25 years, one third of the planet’s population (2,7 billion people) will have to deal with serious water shortage. Our behaviour in The Netherlands has a big impact on water shortage elsewhere on the planet, something a lot of young people will not be aware of.\r\n\r\nThe Watercarriers for Africa are Erik Alblas (32), secondary school teacher of sociology, and Annemieke Plat (28), postwoman. Our goal is to point out the consequences of our consumptive behaviour on the scarcity of water on a global scale, especially to youngsters. On average we use 4000 litres of water a day per person, of which 95% is used in other parts of the world, producing the goods that we buy in our supermarkets. Often these places of production are the same parts of the world in which people are plagued by water scarcity.\r\n\r\nOur activities:\r\n-Starting September of 2012, we will get on our bicycles and cycle from Cape Town to Leiden; a voyage of 20.000 kilometres through some 20 countries. During our trip we will generate media-attention by writing about our experiences of (the effects of) water shortage in the places we come through, and about the shortage that we will undoubtedly experience ourselves, while cycling. We will also visit projects that are aimed at ameliorating access of clean water.\r\n-Various primary schools and colleges follow our progress as we go: we will interact with pupils via e-mail, Skype and films. Alongside, those pupils are provided with an educational programme about the use of water in The Netherlands and in Africa, and the relationship with their own patterns of consumption: what, in practical terms, can they do to reduce their use of water? Also we will generate contact between the Dutch pupils and their contemporaries in the countries we pass through.\r\n-With our trip we will collect for the financial support of local water projects.",

"description": "The Promoting Human Rights and Education in Bangladesh (PHREB) is a not-for-profit, human rights organization, head quartered in Chittagong, Bangladesh. We create, strengthen and expand opportunities for girls and women in Bangladesh. We believe that if girls and women are given the opportunities to fully realize their potentials, they will be the main solutions to the poverty, maternal & neo-born mortalities and gender based violence. PHREB works with, for and on behalf of girls and women to realize the fully sexual and reproductive health and rights for women in Bangladesh. \r\n\r\nFounded in 2004, PHREB works in Chittagong Hill Tracts, Chittagong Metropolitan City, Moheshkhali Island sub-district, Kutubdia Island sub-district and Cox's Bazar Sadar sub-district. \r\n\r\nWe work in partnership with Cordaid in the Netherlands, Kios in Finland and Swedish Amnesty Fund in Sweden. We began our work in 2005 with the financial support from ICCO in the Netherlands. \r\n\r\nCurrently, we have 32 full time staff and 109 teachers and 7 volunteers.\r\n\r\nBKAF is the largest alliance of adolescent girls in Bangladesh with more than half a million members and supporters. PHREB initiatated BKAF in 2005 with an aim to empower adolescent girls to speak out, demand and access their human rights by improving their self-esteem, life-skills and leadership and focusing on the issues of sexual and reprodutive health and rights and violence against girls and women. "description": "The purpose of the Australian Government’s aid program is to promote Australia’s national interests through contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction. The best way to reduce poverty is to promote sustainable economic growth. The aid program will have a much stronger focus on promoting economic growth than it has in the past. We will use more of Australia’s aid funding to expand trade in our region, create jobs, build skills, boost incomes, reduce economic insecurity, and empower women and girls. The aid program will contribute to Australia’s broader economic diplomacy efforts to deliver greater prosperity for Australia, our region, and globally.\nThe Government is committed to an effective and efficient aid program with a strong culture of accountability and performance. Making performance count involves better linking performance assessments with aid funding decisions. With a stronger emphasis on promoting economic growth, private sector development and trade, and delivering value for money, we will build an aid program that is effective in reducing poverty in our region and improves the lives of millions of people in developing countries.",

"description": "The Rabobank Foundation is committed to entering into relationships of equality with all of its partners. In concrete terms this means it prefers to loan than give money. In keeping with these principles, the Rabobank Foundation’s partners likewise always proactively contribute a great deal to the project. They not only contribute through financial contributions from the local community and the customers/members, but also make a vital contribution in the form of manpower, commitment and dedication. Rabobank Foundation employees are also deployed to provide on-site and hands-on assistance by tapping into the vast knowledge of the Rabobank Group in fields including food and agri, financing and co-operative formation.\r\n\r\nThe key question with regard to providing support is always: Will this support provide the prospect of financial self-sufficiency? This means that the support provided must pave the way for the involved co-operatives to ultimately continue providing services to their members without receiving external support. Mobilising the members’ own savings makes a major contribution towards achieving this aim at savings and credit co-operatives. In this way the support received from the Rabobank Foundation is leveraged as an empowering catalyst for development. \r\n\r\nAnother key role performed by the Rabobank Foundation entails guiding, advising and coaching co-operative organisations in developing countries. This provides organisations in developing countries with access to unique banking expertise and experience relating to business and private financing, internal organisation, co-operative management and administration, ICT systems and product development. "description": "There are about 7-9 million homebased workers in the Philippines doing both piece-rated and own account work in rural and urban areas. Like many others working in the informal economy, they suffer from invisibility, poor working and living conditions, lack of resources and social protection.\r\n\r\nPambansang Tagapag-ugnay ng mga Manggagawa sa Bahay (PATAMABA) Inc. or the National Network of Homeworkers, was founded in May 1989 with the objective of creating, strengthening, consolidating and expanding the national network of homebased workers and providing support services for their personal, social and economic well-being.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA helps homebased workers form self-sustaining groups at the grassroots level. At the policy level, it acta to raise awareness about homebased workers and to bring about the necessary policy changes for the benefit of this informal sector.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA has a total membership of about 14,138, 98 percent of whom are women as end of 2003 in its formal registry. Most of these women work in garments, footwear, bamboo, weaving, toy-making, food processing, handicraft and other cottage industries. In addition, the PATAMABA youth sector has been actively recruiting from among their ranks, and has reported a membership of at least 2,000.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA’s key initiatives include education and training, socio-economic assistance, networking and advocacy, social protection and the empowerment of women.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\n\r\nIt all started in 1975, I when a group of rural women founded the Association of the New Filipina (known as KaBaPa), to work for equality, development and peace as laid down by the United Nations in its declaration of International Women’s Year.\r\n\r\nIn the 1980s, community organizers from the KaBaPa together with researchers from the University of the Philippines (UP) came to know that thousands of women, even in the remotest of villages, did farmed-out work for exporters and local manufacturers. These women embroidered dresses and tablecloths, and sewed children’s clothes and schoolbags. They were also weavers, food producers/processors, and makers of handicrafts, footwear, novelty items, fashion accessories and furniture.\r\n\r\nCommon features observed in this group of women homeworkers were low piece rates, poor working conditions, lack of access to resources and to social protection, lack of proper organization and an absence of awareness about their rights as workers and women. Many of them were being exploited by profit-hungry middlemen and exporters; their work was enriching many foreign importers and Filipino traders. For example, some of them who made baby dresses earned a measly ten US cents for a product sold for 15 US dollars at US department stores.\r\n\r\nThe KaBaPa realized that it had a large number of homeworkers among its ranks. When the International Labour Organization (ILO) asked KABAPA leaders to work on a project to organize homebased workers in 1988, they quickly consented.\r\n\r\nDuring a meeting convened by KABAPA of 29 homebased worker-leaders from nine provinces, it became evident that homebased work was a widespread phenomenon in the Philippines and that they all shared similar circumstances and needs. They also realized that they were in many ways ‘invisible’ to the rest of society, especially policy-makers, and that if they wanted to better their lives, they would have to organize themselves at a national level. With this realization, Pambansang Tagapag-ugnay ng mga Manggagawa sa Bahay (PATAMABA), the National Network of Homeworkers, was born.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA was first formed as a committee within KaBaPa. Later, in May 1989, PATAMABA Inc. became independent. It, however, continues to work in close collaboration with KaBaPa.\r\n\r\nThe (ILO), together with KaBaPa, the University of the Philippines, and the Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE), launched Program HOPE aimed at organizing and assisting homeworkers in the Philippines. A systematic awareness raising campaign for homeworkers, with special emphasis on women, was set in motion.\r\n\r\nFor the women themselves, this was the first time they actually began to think of themselves as workers rather than just rural women/housewives with special needs and rights. They saw themselves contributing so much to the national economy yet remained neglected, unrecognized, and invisible in national statistics.",
