School children aged 10-13 are sponsored by friends and family to walk 6 kilometres, while carrying 6 litres of water in a backpack. With two important results: kids learn about global water issues and raise funds to help solve them. Lectures by teachers and external guest on the importance of clean drinking water and proper sanitation ensure the educational nature of the event.\r\n\r\nThe experience helps kids understand what many children their age in developing countries must do every single day, often at the expense of being in school. It is a motivating and effective community event to engage the younger generation on an important topic and teach them that they can make a difference in the lives of others.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\nThe concept of Walking for Water was pioneered in the Netherlands by NGO Aqua for All, and has grown in popularity every year since it started 8 years ago. Results have been impressive — in 2010, 18.000 children from over 400 schools Walked for Water, raising €1.2 million for water projects around the world. Our staffs and volunteers are well equipped with diverse knowledge, skills and attitudes: We have 16 soccer coaches trained under KNVB of Netherlands and Premier Skills of England. The coaches have also been trained in Violence Prevention through football under GIZ of Germany. Our program Coordinators have been exposed and their capacities continuously enhanced through capacity building courses including; Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Early Childhood Development, Guiding and Counseling, Leadership and Development, and financial management\r\n\r\nTYSA has many ways it which it finances its activities and programs. The community where we work has been mobilized to own the programs and therefore offer vital support including human resources, in kind donations and facilities to be used in the projects. TYSA has mobilized large base of local volunteers who give their time back to the community. TYSA has mobilized on line fundraising through Globalgiving, United (streetfootballworld) which supplement community efforts. Fundraising from corporate organizations and foundations also has supplemented community support.\r\n\r\n TYSA collaborates and Networks with several National, Regional and International organization in order to create synergy and experience sharing. Then in 1991, through a nationally competitive process, it became a Special Research of the Australian Research Council. \r\n\r\nAs one of only two federally-funded special research centres on Asia in Australia, its brief was to enhance Australia’s understanding of its Asian environments by providing analysis of social, political, cultural, and economic change in East and Southeast Asia. \r\n\r\nThe Asia Research Centre develops several strategies to maintain its role as an internationally recognized leader in research on contemporary Asia.
