Established in 1967, the Association currently comprises 58 hospitals, 114 health centres and clinics, and 10 health training institutions. Membership has gone up from 25 in 1967 to 182 in 2012. The network members collectively have a staff strength of approximately 7,300. \r\n\r\nCHAG was initially founded in 1967, as a Voluntary Professional Association and subsequently registered as a Corporate Body in 1968 under the Trustees (Incorporation) Act, 1962 Act 106, the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference and the Christian Council of Ghana being the main stakeholders in the Association. The Ghana Pentecostal Council was later admitted into membership as an Associate Member. \r\n\r\nThe governance structure of CHAG comprises three distinct layers of the Council, the Board and the Secretariat. The Board is composed of nominated representatives of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Christian Council of Ghana and the Ghana Pentecostal Council. The Board is tasked to support and monitor the implementation of decisions and programmes by the secretariat that serve the interest of members. It was established as a joint mandate to the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Health (MoH). The mission of the two ministries was to facilitate the provision of health education to the door steps of school children for early detection of disability and also to inculcate into them health promotion habits, attitudes and values as means of improving child survival, school attendance, retention and achievements. The MoE was given the lead role while the MoH provided technical support.\r\n\r\nProgramme objectives:\r\n- Conduct training to build capacity of teachers, school children and community members for the \r\n effective implementation of school health programmes;\r\n- Develop appropriate Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials;\r\n- Inculcate into school children health-promoting habits and values of good hygiene and sanitation \r\n practices including hand washing with soap;\r\n- Bring health education and related health services to the doorsteps of school children for early\r\n detection of defects and disability for prompt referral and management;\r\n- Assist in the prevention and management of communicable and non communicable diseases;\r\n- Promote good environmental sanitation and hygiene practices in schools, which are gender\r\n friendly;\r\n- Promote healthy lifestyles including healthy diet, avoiding alcohol and tobacco consumption,\r\n illicit drugs, physical inactivity and premarital sex.\r\n\r\nThe structure of SHEP\r\nNational - Formerly the Bangladesh field programme of the Geneva-based Lutheran World Service, RDRS became an autonomous national NGO in 1997. RDRS however maintains strong international connections. With LWF (as an Associate Programme); with ACT International; with its core partner agencies mainly in Europe, North America and Japan; and with regional networks such as AZEECON, SAGA and others.\r\n\r\nRDRS came into being at the time of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, in 1971. Set up by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) to help refugees fleeing conflict across the border, it returned with them after liberation to carry out much-needed rehabilitation in the devastated and long-neglected northwest – greater Rangpur - Dinajpur Districts. In 1976, a sectoral development programme was launched to assist the poorest in agriculture, community development, health and women’s economic activities. Construction of roads, bridges, markets and schools continued.\r\nDuring these years, RDRS was the leading non-governmental agency in the northwest. It is also credited with introducing many major innovations: the treadle pump (its most famous invention, allowing crops to be grown in winter); wheat production and other crop diversification; vegetable gardens; and, women’s advancement, not least the picture of women on bicycles.\r\nBy the late 1980s, an integrated Comprehensive programme superseded its sectoral work, focused on conscientisation and group organization of the poor, emphasizing social, educational and economic elements. Physical infrastructure development continued under the Rural Works Project. \r\nSince then, RDRS successes have included the ‘greening the north’ through its roadside and homestead tree plantation programme; improving life on the chars (river islands on the Brahmaputra); raising awareness of women’s rights; promoting savings, credit and skills training to improve the livelihoods of the poor and, the emergence of Union Federations - self-managed people’s organisations of the rural poor. \r\nThe RDRS programme continues to evolve and innovate.
