"description": "There are about 7-9 million homebased workers in the Philippines doing both piece-rated and own account work in rural and urban areas. Like many others working in the informal economy, they suffer from invisibility, poor working and living conditions, lack of resources and social protection.\r\n\r\nPambansang Tagapag-ugnay ng mga Manggagawa sa Bahay (PATAMABA) Inc. or the National Network of Homeworkers, was founded in May 1989 with the objective of creating, strengthening, consolidating and expanding the national network of homebased workers and providing support services for their personal, social and economic well-being.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA helps homebased workers form self-sustaining groups at the grassroots level. At the policy level, it acta to raise awareness about homebased workers and to bring about the necessary policy changes for the benefit of this informal sector.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA has a total membership of about 14,138, 98 percent of whom are women as end of 2003 in its formal registry. Most of these women work in garments, footwear, bamboo, weaving, toy-making, food processing, handicraft and other cottage industries. In addition, the PATAMABA youth sector has been actively recruiting from among their ranks, and has reported a membership of at least 2,000.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA’s key initiatives include education and training, socio-economic assistance, networking and advocacy, social protection and the empowerment of women.\r\n\r\nHistory\r\n\r\nIt all started in 1975, I when a group of rural women founded the Association of the New Filipina (known as KaBaPa), to work for equality, development and peace as laid down by the United Nations in its declaration of International Women’s Year.\r\n\r\nIn the 1980s, community organizers from the KaBaPa together with researchers from the University of the Philippines (UP) came to know that thousands of women, even in the remotest of villages, did farmed-out work for exporters and local manufacturers. These women embroidered dresses and tablecloths, and sewed children’s clothes and schoolbags. They were also weavers, food producers/processors, and makers of handicrafts, footwear, novelty items, fashion accessories and furniture.\r\n\r\nCommon features observed in this group of women homeworkers were low piece rates, poor working conditions, lack of access to resources and to social protection, lack of proper organization and an absence of awareness about their rights as workers and women. Many of them were being exploited by profit-hungry middlemen and exporters; their work was enriching many foreign importers and Filipino traders. For example, some of them who made baby dresses earned a measly ten US cents for a product sold for 15 US dollars at US department stores.\r\n\r\nThe KaBaPa realized that it had a large number of homeworkers among its ranks. When the International Labour Organization (ILO) asked KABAPA leaders to work on a project to organize homebased workers in 1988, they quickly consented.\r\n\r\nDuring a meeting convened by KABAPA of 29 homebased worker-leaders from nine provinces, it became evident that homebased work was a widespread phenomenon in the Philippines and that they all shared similar circumstances and needs. They also realized that they were in many ways ‘invisible’ to the rest of society, especially policy-makers, and that if they wanted to better their lives, they would have to organize themselves at a national level. With this realization, Pambansang Tagapag-ugnay ng mga Manggagawa sa Bahay (PATAMABA), the National Network of Homeworkers, was born.\r\n\r\nPATAMABA was first formed as a committee within KaBaPa. Later, in May 1989, PATAMABA Inc. became independent. It, however, continues to work in close collaboration with KaBaPa.\r\n\r\nThe (ILO), together with KaBaPa, the University of the Philippines, and the Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE), launched Program HOPE aimed at organizing and assisting homeworkers in the Philippines. A systematic awareness raising campaign for homeworkers, with special emphasis on women, was set in motion.\r\n\r\nFor the women themselves, this was the first time they actually began to think of themselves as workers rather than just rural women/housewives with special needs and rights. They saw themselves contributing so much to the national economy yet remained neglected, unrecognized, and invisible in national statistics.",

"description": "Earth Concept is an unique company that combines regular business principles with a high degree of social responsibility. It sells EARTH-products to consumers at competitive prices under an arrangement whereby 100 % of net profits will be donated to fund water projects. Earth Concepts has been founded in 2007 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands by Patrick de Nekker and Henk Witteveen. The company has set up subsidiaries in the Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Brazil.\r\n \r\nPatrick de Nekker is responsible for the Sales Strategy and Operations. He lives according to the idea: “If you don’t do anything, nothing will happen”. He has 10 years of working experience with companies such as Numico, Hero and Heineken, where he served as a Channel and New Business Manager. Why did Patrick become a founding partner of Earth Concepts? He couldn’t get these words out of his mind: “If you had the chance, would you change the world?” Patrick likes the excitement and satisfaction of being an entrepreneur, while also having the opportunity to increase the value and meaning of his life by helping people throughout the world. In the case of Earth Concepts this means: helping people worldwide to gain access to clean, drinkable water and food.\r\n \r\nHenk Witteveen is responsible for Marketing and Communication. Henk is interested in questions on how to reach people and change the way they usually think and act. He has worked as an entrepreneur in several areas of communication: he was publisher for 10 years of the biggest Dance Magazine, organized the biggest Dance Event in the Benelux, the FFWD Dance Parade with 500.000 visitors and set up many events for various brands. Now it is time to give back and as he states: “Giving back; that feels really good“.",

"description": "The Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust (CPAT) is an independent charitable trust which was established in 1975. Its objective is ‘to advance the education of the public in archaeology’, and this is achieved through three interconnected strands of activity.\r\n\r\nThe Historic Environment Management team maintain the regional Historic Environment Record (HER); provide Planning Services for local authorities, developers and other bodies; and undertake Heritage Management work for Welsh Government, local authorities, landowners, developers and others. \r\n\r\nThe Education and Outreach service provides a wide variety of public engagement, participation and social inclusion opportunities for a range of groups and individuals across the Clwyd-Powys region. This includes events and activities for the general public, as well as work targeted specifically at improving social outcomes and economic aspirations.\r\n\r\nThe Investigation and Research team are responsible for the delivery of archaeological projects funded by private- and public-sector bodies, including Welsh Government. This work enhances the knowledge base which supports Cadw decision-making, enables sustainable development across our region, and delivers training and educational outcomes for professionals, non-professionals and the public.\r\n\r\nThe Administration department maintains a strict control on expenditure, and ensures that the operations of the Trust are conducted in an efficient manner. Governance of the Trust is through a Board of Trustees, which normally meets four times per year. Other activities of the Trust are advised by an Ethics Committee, an Investment Committee, and the Board of Directors of the CPAT HER Charitable Trust. CPAT submits publicly-accessible annual accounts to the Charities Commission, and files returns to Companies House. CPAT is a Registered Organisation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.\r\n",

"description": "The operations of Practical Action's regional office in Nairobi are consolidated across four geographical clusters spread across the northern, central, and southwest parts of Kenya. These are: Somali and Karamoja clusters in the north, the Lake Victoria cluster in the south west of the country and the Nairobi-Nakuru cluster in central Kenya.\r\n\r\nThe work carried out by Practical Action regional office in Kenya is centred on three themes:\r\n\r\nReducing vulnerability\r\nTo strengthen the ability of poor women and men to use technology to cope with threats to their livelihoods from natural disasters, environmental degradation and civil conflict.\r\n\r\nMaking markets work for poor people\r\nTo enable poor women and men to use technologies effectively in systems of production, processing and marketing to build secure livelihoods.\r\n\r\nImproving access to infrastructure services\r\nTo improve the access of poor women and men to locally managed infrastructure services.\r\nThe three areas of work are supervised and guided by three programme team leaders. The programme implementation team consists of project managers who are responsible for managing the different projects that come under each broad theme area.\r\n\r\nIn addition, there is also a Quality Assurance and Fundraising Unit, which incorporates: fundraising, communications and the resource centre. The Unit not only provides support to the organization by giving inputs to evaluation and monitoring of projects and by liaising with donors and funding organizations but also facilitates information sharing of the project experiences, profile raising and financial support for the organisation. It aims to strengthen Practical Action-EA's presence as a lead authority in poverty alleviation through the use of appropriate technologies and processes within the East Africa region. The Eastern Africa office is managed by the Eastern Africa Regional Director, Grace Mukasa.",

"description": "PEPS-C is a Roman Catholic NGO, which was established by the Brothers FIC in collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Wa. PEPS-C was registered and incorporated as a Company limited by Guarantee (NGO), with registration number G. 4,208 at the Registrar General Department, since 1999.\r\n\r\nThe establishment of the centre became necessary when it was realized that a large number of graduates trained by the vocational schools in the upper west region were drifting to the urban areas of southern Ghana because of lack of employment opportunities.\r\n\r\nThe high unemployment rate and poverty of the youth in the region was a social problem. Most of the youth after passing out of technical/vocational institutions migrate to the urban areas of the Upper West Region and also to urban areas of the regions in the south of the country in search of jobs. Migration rate is therefore very high leading to low retention of skilled manpower for the region’s development. PEPS-C as a development actor recognises, this as a social problem, and could only be addressed by putting in place an enabling environment that would attract and retain the skilled youth in the region, and rural areas for socio-economic development. \r\n\r\nDriven by a desire to change this situation, PEPS-C formulated a vision that intends to turn the situation around. This vision is about a future where PEPS-C would become a major development force in reducing youth migration through promoting employment opportunities for the youth of the Upper West Region in technical vocational institutions. \r\n\r\nThe main aim of PEPS-C was to mobilize these Technical/Vocational School leavers into viable producer enterprises to enable them earn a living through sustainable self-employment and thereby increase their retention rate in the Upper West region.\r\n\r\nOver the years, PEPS-C has been able to promote 90 groups of cooperatives or sole producer enterprises, dotted all over the North Western part of the Northern Regions of Ghana, engaged in various fields of technical activities. These enterprises / co-operatives are all engaged in various trade areas such as, building, woodwork, metalwork, textile weaving, batik tie and dye, dressmaking etc. The total number of youth actively engaged in production, stood at +384 of which 249 representing 65% were women and 135 representing 35% were men. PEPS-C has been trying to provide financial and technical support services to these enterprises. \r\n\r\nIn the year 2000 the project was evaluated and some of these enterprises were found to be weak in their business. Some of the identifiable causes of their weakness have been mainly, inadequate knowledge in financial and business management skills and lack of information leading to market access. \r\n\r\nIn this regard, the financial and technical support services have been found to be insufficient. Subsequently, after conducting need assessment among the enterprises, it was thought that besides finding appropriate ways of getting pertinent information, leading to market access, it was necessary to provide this complementary management training, which did not form part of their formal training in the Technical/Vocational schools. By so doing PEPS-C would be promoting viable producer enterprises. The mission and vision formulated by PEPS-C is therefore as follows.\r\n\r\nMission and Vision of PEPS-C\r\n\r\nMission\r\n“Promoting viable producer enterprises towards sustained employment of the skilled youth for the development of the individual and North-western Ghana”\r\n\r\nVision \r\nPEPS-C is committed to the following vision; “Ensuring total sustainability of all enterprises being promoted.”\r\n\r\nThe following strategic objectives have been formulated to address the mission and vision. \r\n\r\nStrategic Development Objectives\r\n• To mobilize the skilled youth into viable producer enterprises to enable them earn a living through sustainable self-employment and thereby increase their retention rate for the development of their communities and the north-western part of the Northern region of Ghana.\r\nStrategic Project Objectives \r\n As the core business of PEPS-C is small enterprise promotion the proposed project seeks to realize the following objectives:\r\n\r\n• To train all the enterprise groups under the support of PEPS-C, in the area of business management, financial management, and entrepreneurship skills development, to enhance their knowledge, and improve their production in both quality and quantity, in the coming three years\r\n\r\n• To research into ways and means of accessing market and market expansion for the product and services of the enterprises\r\n\r\nPEPS-C has a long and accumulated knowledge of small-scale business development in the Upper West Region. This is fundamental in understanding the dynamics of the situation in the region and PEPS-C, definitely has leverage in this regard. It is this accumulated knowledge that enables PEPS-C to identify capacity building as a crucial factor to the success of the enterprises promotion activities. To facilitate this process, PEPS-C has entered into partnership with C4C and IICD to get the necessary assistance in order to build the capacity of teachers in four (4) Vocational Schools using ICT. This is intended to develop their capacity in the use of ICT tools to improve on the quality of their teaching learning activities. The focus is to equip the teachers with the relevant skills of using available ICT tools to enhance the delivery of their lessons and how to access relevant information and materials to improve upon the quality of their teaching learning activities. In the long run it is intended that students will reap the benefits by being equipped with the relevant skills for the job market. It can never be overstressed that this will contribute effectively to the socio-economic development of the youth in the Upper West Region in particular and Ghana as a whole. \r\n \r\nPEPS-C’s intervention in promoting employment for technical and vocational graduates is paramount to the stimulation of economic activities in the rural areas. This move is in line with government’s policy on private sector development.\r\n\r\nPEPS-C in its own capacity is running/undertaken the following\r\n• A community savings and lending micro-finance project known as PEPS-C Enterprise Banking Project (EBANK Project) which afforts enterprise members in their communities the opportunity (skills, simple book keeping and financial knowledge) to form smaller savings and internal lending groups with other community members. This has led to the start-up of a credit union known as Producer Enterprises Cooperative Credit Union [(PECCU) (PECCU is currently operating as a study group under the regulations)] with enterprise members forming the core of it. This became necessery becuase PEPS-C could no longer support its enterprise members financially. PEPS-C initiated all these becuase, we belief that together with our enterprise members we can create and share wealth.\r\n\r\n• A commercial unit/department which trades in materials such as those for building, woodwork, metalwork, and yarns for textile weaving among other services provided to its enterprise members and the general public. \r\n\r\nPEPS-C as a promoter of small scale businesses and enterpreneurs hopes to do more in the years to come.\r\n",

"description": "Potters for Peace is a U.S. based, registered non profit organization working with clay artisans in the developing world. We are also a registered non-governmental organization in Nicaragua where our two person staff carries out a program of offering assistance in design, technical problems and marketing for artisans working in clay, primarily small groups of women living in rural areas.\r\n\r\nPotters for Peace also works worldwide with local partners to set up production facilities for low-cost, low-tech, highly effective ceramic water filters. The filter is based on a ten liter ceramic bucket design originally developed in Guatemala by Fernando Mazariegos. \r\n\r\nPotters for Peace has developed a semi-mechanized technology transfer package which enables production of ceramic filters to be underway almost anywhere in the world after a one month training and set-up session. \r\nPFP does not itself make or sell ceramic filters nor do we have any financial interest in the facilities we set up.",
