"description": "PEN is a non-political organisation representing writers of the world, defending free-expression and encouraging literature. We live by a strong PEN Charter, which champions the ideal of “one humanity living in peace in one world”. Is this not an ideal to uphold for all people on all continents, including Africa?\r\n\r\nWrite! Africa Write! becomes a call for African writers to say what they wish to say and to eschew the divisions of the past in favour of the idea of one humanity living in peace on one continent. Originally PEN stood for Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Editors, and Novelists. A leading voice of literature, PEN now brings together poets, novelists, essayists, historians, playwrights, critics, translators, editors, journalists and screenwriters in a common concern for the craft and art of writing and a commitment to freedom of expression through the written word. Through its 145 Centres in more than 104 countries, PEN International operates on all six continents. The South African PEN Centre (PEN SA) is a branch of PEN International.\r\n\r\nPEN SA welcomes new members – to qualify for membership you need to be a published writer (one literary work or more published by a recognised publisher) or a person deemed by the committee to be recognised as of sufficient standing. Membership of PEN SA is open to all South Africans, including non-South Africans permanently resident in South Africa. The committee is the final judge of any candidate for election to PEN SA. Candidates for membership are also required to agree to subscribe to the PEN Charter. If you are in agreement with the PEN Charter and would like to be considered for membership please email Deborah Horn-Botha information regarding your publication/s (your literary “CV”) and she will pass it on to the committee.",

"description": "Plan is an international development organisation promoting children’s rights. Plan has been operating in Finland since 1998. Plan International was founded in 1937.\r\n\r\nPlan Finland is the largest child sponsorship organisation in Finland. Plan has no religious or political affiliations. Tens of thousands of Finns support our work and share our mission to remove poverty and fulfill children's rights across the globe. Our vision is a world where human rights are respected and children realise their full potential as members of society. In addition to development projects and child sponsorship in developing countries, we also work on a national level in Finland, focus on corporate partnerships, advocacy work and communication. We not only listen to children but ask them to actively participate in our work and make decisions for themselves.\r\n\r\nPlan receives funding from individual donors, corporate partners, The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the EU and the UN. Through Plan, your help is delivered quickly and reliably. Plan International works in 69 countries and runs development programs in 50 countries. There are fundraising national offices in 22 countries, Finland being one of them. \r\n\r\nThe immediate goal of Plan’s work is to fulfil children’s rights throughout the world. We want a world where human rights are respected and children can live up to their potential as full members of society.",

"description": "RNW Media: a media organisation for social change. In parts of the world where change is hard to achieve because freedom of speech is restricted, we use media to make lives better.\r\nWe work with people aged 15 to 30. If you want to change society, young people are the ones who make a difference. But to shape a better future, they need information. So we help them get access to independent journalism and media.\r\n\r\nOur three core themes are democracy and good governance, sexual health and rights and international justice. This reflects the ideals of our home country the Netherlands, with its democratic tradition, open-minded attitude to sexuality and global standing as the home of the International Criminal Court.\r\n\r\nCreating communities\r\nWe have a talented team of young journalists and specialists from all over the world, who are passionate about the value of their work. And unique to RNW Media is our close relationship with partner organisations and citizens in our target regions. We talk, we team up, we work together on an equal footing. We draw on local expertise to co-create and exchange content. Our vast network isn’t just about media production, it’s about people. We build and connect communities.\r\n\r\nRNW Media is devoted to using media in innovative ways, leaving behind old models of broadcasting and news production. We help young media producers to connect with their audiences, in specific communities, using persuasive storytelling. Our training centre RNTC believes in creativity and fresh approaches to content. And we’re excited by the way social media and the world online brings people together.\r\n\r\nMedia with the courage for change\r\nRNW Media works with countries where freedom of expression is severely restricted. The list today includes China and 17 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Arab world. We give access to information that isn’t available in the local media because of laws or taboos.\r\n",

"description": "For almost 100 years we have been working for equality and the human rights of women and girls to water and sanitation. We do this together with partners in 10 African and Asian countries. Our goal is a world in which all women and girls can exercise their right to water and sanitation, resulting in a healthier and more just society. \r\n\r\nIn a rapidly changing world grappling with major crises in the areas of climate, health and human rights, Simavi focuses on three areas where we believe we can achieve the greatest impact with our projects, lobbying and campaigns: equality, climate and power. \r\n\r\nWe want to increase the involvement and leadership of women in water and sanitation. We believe that women's and girls' access to climate-resilient water and sanitation is at the heart of climate justice. We are also convinced that women's voices and expertise are crucial for change when it comes to water and sanitation. \r\n\r\nOur work is part of the Sustainable Development Goals and Simavi focuses specifically on three interconnected SDGs: water and sanitation (SDG6); gender equality (SDG5) and climate (SDG13).

Founded in the Netherlands nearly 50 years ago, we have built a long-term, local presence in 38 of the poorest countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Our global team of local and international advisors work with local partners to equip communities, businesses and organisations with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to increase their incomes and gain access to basic services – empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and guide their own development. \r\n\r\nOur mission is to make a lasting difference in the lives of millions of people living in poverty. \r\n\r\nBy sharing our specialist expertise in Agriculture, Energy and Water, Sanitation & Hygiene, we contribute to solving some of the leading problems facing the world today – helping to find local solutions to global challenges and sowing the seeds of lasting change. We recognise that sustained poverty reduction requires people living in poverty to both contribute to and benefit from growth while having access to quality basic services. With this in mind, our work focuses on enabling the four factors we have learnt are essential for successful development: inclusive development, systemic change, local ownership, and contextualised solutions.\r\n\r\nNext to our many country offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, we also have an affiliate office in Washington D.C. SNV USA’s primary goal is to connect North American partners and donors to a global network of technical advisors implementing innovative solutions to alleviate poverty through sustainable and locally-led development.",

"description": "Sympany is a social entrepreneur. Sympany has neither political nor religious backgrounds. The revenue Sympany generates through the collection, sorting and selling textiles is put in to help people from disadvantaged situations. Every year the organisation provides around 20 million kilograms of clothing and other textiles a second life. It will be worn again and recycled into new products. In addition, Sympany provides employment opportunities for people with a distance to the labor market. All clothing is sold. The money goes through the foundation affiliated Sympany⁺ to projects in DR Congo, Malawi, Angola and India to self-reliance and sustainability with an increasing focus on the textile industry. Sympany wants to teach farmers to get more from their land without additional burden on the environment. Sympany trains students in practical professions as seamstress and keep everything they do, the balance between people, planet and value in mind.",
