During a trip to Thailand they discovered tremendous needs among blind children in that country. Not only because of their physical handicap, but also because of the stigma and rejection they face. Education was not available for blind children. That was the reason to start a foundation.\r\n\r\nThrough the years\r\nThrough the years the small family foundation has grown to a well-organized foundation that has become an important party in helping the blind and visually impaired in developing countries. The foundation found, and still finds, its inspiration in the Gospel that calls upon us to reach out to the poor and the underpriviliged.\r\n\r\nExtended\r\nThe primary mission of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD The Netherlands was to educate blind children. Later on, the field of work broadened. We discoverd that a lot of children become needlessly blind, so prevention and treatment of blindness was added. Also there came a demand to help people who were irreversibly blind. Rehabilitation and low vision services were added. In recent years the focus has switched to inclusive development. That means that the society is equipped for equal participation of persons with a disability.\r\n\r\nLIGHT FOR THE WORLD\r\nIn 2011 Dark & Light joined LIGHT FOR THE WORLD, a European confederation of national development NGOs committed to saving eyesight, improving the quality of life and advocating for the rights of person with disabilities in the underprivileged regions of our world. LIGHT FOR THE WORLD has members in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic and The Netherlands.\r\n\r\nSince 2012, Dark & Light Foundation is called LIGHT FOR THE WORLD The Netherlands. As a confederation member we still have our own identity, mission, vision, board and staff.\r\n\r\nLIGHT FOR THE WORLD The Netherlands supports about 40 projects in 11 countries in Africa and Asia. On a yearly basis about 5 million euro is spent on projects. The office is based in Veenendaal, The Netherlands with about 14 staff. Deze projecten werden gefinancierd door VNG in het Logo South programma. De verantwoordelijkheid voor het HIV/Aidsproject (2003-2010) was opgedragen aan het bestuur van de stichting. De 3 grote VNG-projecten zijn eind 2010 afgesloten. This independence makes it possible to pursue an efficient and stimulating policy in the fields of education and research, and to take advantage of new developments. The faculty is located in the Reuvens Building on the Reuvensplaats.\r\n\r\nThe ambition of the faculty is to develop into a prominent archaeological research and training centre at a European level. In European terms, the faculty is an averagely-sized institute, with a wide range of specializations and several specialist (laboratory) facilities. Leiden can pride itself on a long archaeological tradition, going back to Professor Reuvens at the beginning of the 19th century.\r\n\r\nApart from the traditionally strong Prehistory of Northwestern Europe and Classical Archaeology, Leiden offers (as the only university in the Netherlands) a specialization in the Palaeolithic, and in the archaeology of the civilizations of the Near East, Asia, and the Americas, as well as a number of archaeological sciences, such as pollen analysis, archaeozoology, computer applications, ceramology, and microwear analysis.\r\n\r\nThe variety of non-western language and culture studies within the Faculty of Arts (CNWS), and the presence in Leiden of the National Museums of Ethnology and Antiquities, as well as Naturalis, are also enhancing factors.\r\n\r\nA clearly social responsibility of archaeology is the care of the material heritage of past cultures. International treaties (for instance Valetta) state that archaeological investigations should be carried out prior to large building projects. The faculty is active in this field via a commercial company. Hence, students get quickly involved in the practical side (traineeships) of archaeology, with attention to the managerial side of archaeological work. In addition, the faculty has agreements of cooperation with local archaeological services in the surroundings (Leiden, The Hague, Delft).\r\n\r\nAt present, the faculty has a strong market position in the Netherlands. Kalikot, Humla, Mugu and Dolpa, a Program Support Office at Nepalgunj and a Coordination Office in Kathmandu. \r\n\r\nKarnali Zone is endowed with abundant natural resources like flora, fauna, water, agriculture, horticulture, tourism, mines, minerals, lakes etc. But, unfortunately, these have not been tapped to the least for the benefits of the people for their livelihood improvement due to continued state neglect such as lack of appropriate development policies and commitment for Karnali Zone. As a result, the people of Karnali Zone continued to remain very poor deprived of adequate basic facilities like health, education, food, employment, markets, communication etc. since time immemorial and falls at the bottom of Human Development Index. More so, the caste and gender discrimination in Karnali Zone is comparatively high resulting in lack of access of women, Dalits and marginalized people to resources, opportunities and decision making processes from social, economical and political perspectives. In accordance with the local culture the village for children is called \"Lord Buddha Home for Children\". This complex facilitates in a shelter for hundred children, girls as well boys, in small family houses for 10 children each. The children are raised by their \"own\" mother, who gives them the loved and respect they deserve. A health centre wich is also available for the local community, a pray- annex recreation building and staff rooms are part of the village. A primary school will soon get under construction. Since this year there is also a vocational training centre, wich is also available for the children and youth from the local community.\r\nThe buildings are surrounded by a play yard, sportfields, a kitchen garden and soon here will be a small farm for hte kids.\r\n\r\nBecause of the numbers and the problems of the outcast children in Bodhgaya region, it's impossible to house all the outcast children in the village. To prevent theze children from derailing, The \"Lord Buddha Home for Children\" provides Community Empowerment programs about health care, education and employment for these children and their families. In this context healthcare is the foundation for a healthy society. When people are healthy, it becomes easier for them to follow an education learn a trade ans work towards a better life. Therefore we have setting up Multi Activity Centres (MA|C's), run by local people, where people can learn how to control their helath, the helath of their family and how to improve the local living conditions.\r\nThese extensions to the program are seen as innovative elements in finding a solution for the current problems facing the orphans and outcast children in and around Bodhgaya. they add enormous value to the program.\r\n\r\nThe Stichting Kinderhulp Bodhgaya/Child Welfare Bodhgaya Foundation is cooperating the programs with the NGO Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra in Hazaribag, India.
