At that time the country was called Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes who had an ambition to build a railway line from Cape to Cairo and to develop the hinterland economically. With the coming of Independence from Britain in 1980, the country's name changed to Zimbabwe and a few years later, the capital city's name was changed from Salisbury to Harare. The city remains the capital and economic hub of Zimbabwe. In Harare there are now ten Rotary Clubs.\r\n\r\nUp to June 1997 the country formed part of Rotary International District 9250 but at present is one of the four countries of District 9210. Previously the Kingdom of Swaziland and the northern and eastern parts of the then province of Transvaal in South Africa were part of the District. Now the District encompasses Malawi, Zambia and the northern half of Mozambique in addition to the whole of Zimbabwe. This covers a large area of sub-equatorial Africa. So the District Governor annually has a daunting task to visit all the Clubs in this large District.\r\n\r\nAt the time of redistricting there was disappointment at not being able to meet annually close Rotarian friends from Swaziland and South Africa at future assemblies and conferences. However it has created opportunities for further friendships with Rotarians in less developed neighbouring countries in Southern Africa and provided almost unlimited opportunities for service.\r\n\r\nLike the club which sponsored the formation of RC of Harare more than seven decades ago, the Johannesburg Rotary Club, the first on the African continent, the average age of membership continues to be the highest in R I District 9210. Because of this, the club has a goodly number of members now in retirement, so steps continue to be taken to induct younger members. The weekly luncheon attendance by the 70s plus age group, however, remains regular. Their wise counsel on the service committees particularly, based on their experience with major projects many initiated by them in earlier days, is much appreciated and where possible these 'old timers' continue to support the ongoing ones. Membership in general of course realizes that there is the continuous need for an inflow of new younger members to maintain the dynamism for which the club is so well known.\r\n\r\nThe RC of Harare boasts of having provided no less than seven District Governors. Formerly the Bangladesh field programme of the Geneva-based Lutheran World Service, RDRS became an autonomous national NGO in 1997. RDRS however maintains strong international connections. With LWF (as an Associate Programme); with ACT International; with its core partner agencies mainly in Europe, North America and Japan; and with regional networks such as AZEECON, SAGA and others.\r\n\r\nRDRS came into being at the time of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, in 1971. Set up by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) to help refugees fleeing conflict across the border, it returned with them after liberation to carry out much-needed rehabilitation in the devastated and long-neglected northwest – greater Rangpur - Dinajpur Districts. In 1976, a sectoral development programme was launched to assist the poorest in agriculture, community development, health and women’s economic activities. Construction of roads, bridges, markets and schools continued.\r\nDuring these years, RDRS was the leading non-governmental agency in the northwest. It is also credited with introducing many major innovations: the treadle pump (its most famous invention, allowing crops to be grown in winter); wheat production and other crop diversification; vegetable gardens; and, women’s advancement, not least the picture of women on bicycles.\r\nBy the late 1980s, an integrated Comprehensive programme superseded its sectoral work, focused on conscientisation and group organization of the poor, emphasizing social, educational and economic elements. Physical infrastructure development continued under the Rural Works Project. \r\nSince then, RDRS successes have included the ‘greening the north’ through its roadside and homestead tree plantation programme; improving life on the chars (river islands on the Brahmaputra); raising awareness of women’s rights; promoting savings, credit and skills training to improve the livelihoods of the poor and, the emergence of Union Federations - self-managed people’s organisations of the rural poor. \r\nThe RDRS programme continues to evolve and innovate. In that view, water is a key element. Given its expertise in this field, PROTOS particularly stands up for equitable, sustainable and participatory water management in the North and the South.\r\n- Equitable water management assumes solidarity amongst all users, whereby each individual has the right to sufficient water quantities for a well-balanced human development.\r\n- Sustainable water management seeks to optimally use the available water sources without threatening the other users, the environment or the future.\r\n- Participatory water management requires the involvement of each individual and community, including disadvantaged groups, providing the opportunity for them to take control of their own future. In this, a fair gender balance has to be respected.\r\nPROTOS wants to achieve these objectives by:\r\n- Supporting participatory development programmes in the South: via an improvement of access to water, and of distribution and/or valorisation of water, PROTOS aims to improve the socio-economic situation of the local population.\r\n- Being a lever: by strengthening the capacities, the vision and the position of organisations that are able to capitalize on the knowledge fostered by these programmes and capable of making profit of this knowledge in the future.\r\n- Stimulating the cooperation between all parties involved in the planning and implementation of local development, including the civil society organisations and the local authorities.\r\n- Stimulating the debate on the equitable, sustainable and participatory water resources management in both the North and the South.
