"description": "Between today and 2015, 700,000 mothers will not survive delivering their children unless the available healthcare improves. The rate of maternal mortality is disturbingly high, particularly in fragile countries such as the Central African Republic, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Corruption and a failing administration continually impair healthcare in these countries.\r\n\r\nThe time has come to make healthcare accessible to all people regardless of whether they live in rich or poor areas. The approach used tightens controls and enables patients to take part in deciding their own treatment. In addition, staff remuneration has been made dependent on the achieved results in order to motivate staff to go the extra mile. An approach is called for that not only limits patient contribution to healthcare but also improves its accessibility.\r\n\r\nAll in all, it is time for change. Healthy women are the pillars of both their families and of society. Not only should they be informed how to stay healthy, but also that it is their right to do so; healthcare must be accessible to them. Medical supervision both before and during their pregnancy is crucial. Cordaid works on improving this for all women.\r\n\r\nCordaid aims at providing affordable and accessible healthcare to all, which it has done for many years. Its approach -- using the most recent developments and finance methods -- is followed throughout the world.",

However, resources are often more of a curse: they are at the root of severe environmental damage, violations of human rights, conflicts, and poverty.\r\n\r\nDeveloping countries that possess natural resources are the stage for power struggles between multinational corporations and governments. And the stakes are only increasing as the prices are rising and shortages occur. People often do not have sufficient powers to protect their own interests. This has to change and it can be changed.\r\n\r\nIt is about time that communities benefit from the resources their land provides. In order to achieve this goal, an open dialogue based on equality is arranged between companies, governments and the public. Such dialogues aim at moving them to fair and specific agreements. That is what Cordaid does.\r\n\r\nCordaid facilitates an open dialogue so communities can flourish.",

"description": "Poverty and inequality cause tensions; it is the lack of prospects that creates conflicts. Earning a living wage allows people to regain control of their lives, to care for their families and to shape their futures. As a result, people will start working together and their communities will flourish.\r\n\r\nPeople living in fragile areas require capital to start their own business. If there are any financial institutions at all, they often are new to the business or inexperienced and lack the knowledge to reach many of their customers. Such institutions require support to grow but cannot find the investors that are prepared to take risks.\r\n\r\nIt requires expertise of conflict transformation, financial expertise as well as an insight into local circumstances to invest responsibly in financial institutions in fragile areas. The more fragile an area, the more an international development organization has to be prepared to bear risks, including financial risks.\r\n\r\nCordaid invests in a lasting peace. It does so by supporting microfinance institutions, entrepreneurs and companies, with expertise, advice and financial resources.\r\n\r\nCordaid offers clear investment policies and consideration for risk management as well as its own investment capital, but above all, Cordaid has compassion.",

"description": "Imagine homeless children, parents who cannot afford to pay school fees, or an orphan who is the only caretaker of his or her siblings. Poverty and conflict have a disastrous effect on a child’s healthy development.\r\n\r\nEveryone agrees that a caring home for every child is something we all want. The same goes for finding foster families for those children who might otherwise be left homeless, or providing family coaches to support the families of children with disabilities. And finally, everyone wants to be able to provide families that are living in extreme poverty with financial support to prevent their children from having to work at a young age.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, all children are entitled to adequate education that is provided by qualified teachers and an involved government, with parents’ committees that stimulate their sons and daughters to go to school.\r\n\r\nA comprehensive approach is needed to enable all children of each family to go to school. Such an approach not only has to stimulate all parties involved to tackle the issue, including public authorities, parents, students and teachers, but also has to reward the achievement of good results.",

"description": "The Village Education Resource Center (VERC) was established in 1977 as a project of Save the Children-USA with funding from UNICEF. In 1981 it was indigenized as a Private Voluntary Development Organization (PVDO). VERC was designed to fill the void of in-country capacity building support to government and related community and rural development agencies. Its initial activities included communication, education, training material development, imparting training, conduct participatory action research and technology promotion.\r\nVERC’s field program evolved out of its need for an environment to apply its innovations in participatory development. VERC also worked to undertake capacity building activities of the rural poor, beginning with women’s literacy, health and sanitation and human resource development.\r\nRight from the beginning, it was however obvious that VERC’s main forte was its training services. Its commitment to quality materials, content and trainers quickly led to its recognition as a leading organization in this field. Its variety of development education, management, sectoral and skill training courses have reached almost around 417680 people to March 2012.\r\nVision : A self-reliant society based on justice, equity and sustainability, where every human being has the equal opportunity to maximize their potentials.\r\nIn all its work, VERC is committed to the principle of “self-actualization” a process of raising people’s consciousness to a level at which they can realize their potentials and are motivated to reorder their lives. \r\nPROGRAMS\r\nEntering its 36th year of operation, VERC’s activities have both grown and diversified as to include:\r\nField level\r\n\r\n Institution Building & Income Generation\r\n Water, Sanitation Hygiene Promotion, Arsenic Mitigation & Technology \r\n Development\r\n Education\r\n Health – Preventive and Clinical support on maternal and child health \r\n care\r\n Environmental Protection\r\n Assisting the GOB in promoting good governance in the country \r\n Disaster Preparedness and Management\r\n Integrating Disability Issues in Community Development\r\n\r\nSupport Services \r\n Training & Communication\r\n Research, Monitoring, Evaluation & Documentation\r\n Capacity Building ofs Local Organisations and Strengthening of Local \r\n Government \r\nAbout eighty percent of VERC's services are aimed at the interest of the poor women and children. In many of its human development efforts, VERC’s success has been encouraging, though along with its share of ups VERC has had to endure its share of downs as well. It is in the face of adversity that VERC has learnt many of its most valuable lessons. A long-term strategic framework has been developed by which VERC hopes to maximize sustainability of its development efforts.\r\n",

"description": "SANNAM is a network of nurses and midwives of the SADC region, which was formed in 2002. This was as a result of deliberations that took place at a satellite meeting preceding the International Aids Conference in Durban in 2000. National Nurses Associations had in their own countries been working on improving the conditions for nurses, however in the absence of mechanisms to share best practices; they had been left to re invent the wheel.\r\nNurses and midwives of the region realized that they have to join hands in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic that was and is still hitting the SADC region hard. Thus this network was formed. SANNAM has made tremendous strides towards strengthening NNAs/NNOs (National Nursing Associations/Organisations) through capacity building, networking and sharing of best practices. Its 15 member NNOs/NNAs currently represent over 200,000 Nurses and Midwives. \r\n\r\nThis regional structure is registered in terms of the Non-profit Organizations Act of 1997 in South Africa and coordinates all projects from its Secretariat established at 605 Church Street (DENOSA Headquarters), Pretoria 0001, South Africa. \r\n\r\nThe Secretariat is led by an Executive Director, supported by a qualified Finance Officer and an Administrative Secretary and overseen by an Executive Committee of five members, who are presidents of member NNAs/NNOs. The secretariat ensures the effective implementation and management of regional projects through coordinating meetings, contracting services effectively, and monitoring and evaluation. It also serves to strengthen the network and ensure that programmes are integrated through sharing information and consolidating the organisation. \r\nThe Secretariat is managed in agreement with labour regulations of the host country (South Africa) and collaborates with SADC Secretariat Health Sector and HIV/AIDS Unit for regional concerns and partnership in some projects. Member NNAs/NNOs are legal entities registered in their countries. The organization has initiated negotiations with the SADC secretariat for long –term sustainability.\r\n\r\nSANNAM collaborate with other regional and international organizations such as: CIDA through CNA, ICN, WHO – Afro, ILO, UNAIDS, EQUINET, Universities…and is member of the GHWA.\r\n\r\nSANNAM has received support from CORDAID since 2009 to implement a 2 year project that aimed at improving the working conditions of Nurses and Midwives in the region through strengthening the lobbying and advocating capacity of NNAs/NNOs. The results of this project inspired the need to further enhance advocacy capacity of Nursing and Midwifery leaders at national and peripheral level for effective involvement in decision making and influencing health policies.\r\n\r\nSANNAM vision is: Improved regional health services through strengthening National Nurses Associations/Organisations (NNAs/NNOs); its activities focus on: networking, capacity building, experiences sharing, twinning partnership, lobby and advocacy, research (not well developed) and support to members (e.g coaching and solidarity interventions).",

"description": "Heritage Watch is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Southeast Asia’s cultural heritage.\r\n\r\nCambodia is famed for the temples of Angkor but little is known of how these temples came to be. The secrets to the rise of Angkor are to be found in the lesser known temples and the countless prehistoric settlements and cemeteries across Cambodia.\r\n\r\nHeritage Watch was founded in 2003 as a result of a sharp increase in the destruction of Cambodia’s precious cultural heritage - especially the looting of ancient temples and cemetery sites nationwide. \r\n\r\nHeritage Watch is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the world, through research, education, and advocacy.\r\n\r\nIts mandate is to:\r\n • study threats to cultural heritage, including the illicit trade in antiquities, the looting of archaeological sites, and loss of historic architecture, among others.\r\n\r\n • educate the public on the artistic, informational, historical, cultural, and economic importance of heritage resources\r\n\r\n • increase access to and awareness of national and international law affecting cultural property, while working with the proper authorities to implement, enforce, and improve it.\r\n\r\n• Promote responsible tourism that furthers cultural and economic development and encourage the tourism industry to support the arts, culture, heritage and development.\r\n\r\n• foster communication between relevant governmental and intergovernmental agencies, nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions, and individuals\r\n\r\nHeritage Watch has undertaken a diverse range of projects aimed at both the supply and demand end of the international antiquities trade as well as promoting responsible tourism in Cambodia.",

"description": "International Sports Alliance is a non-profit organisation that supports programmes in the field of sport for development and peace. We consider sport an effective tool for development and peace as it provides a regulated and neutral context where emotions such as aggression, anger and sadness, but also joy and happiness can be expressed and reflected upon. It disregards geographical borders and is a universal language that people all over the world understand. Furthermore it is a cost-effective way to reach large audiences of active participants and non-participants. \r\nIn all our activities our overall objective is to improve the capacities and sustainability of local organisations that are located in marginalized and (post)conflict areas. We focus on the needs and requests from local Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that have a wish to initiate or improve sport for development and peace practices. Within our organisation we emphasize and promote the right for participation for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, religion or handicap. Among the countries in which we are active are Burkina Faso, Mali, Indonesia, Kenya, Uganda, South-Sudan, Surinam and South Africa.\r\n\r\nIn order to use sports as a tool for development and peace it is imperative to develop, organise and structure projects and programmes in such a manner that the positive force of sports can be used. International Sports Alliance offers professional competences to develop and improve the works of sustainable sport for development projects and programmes. We offer academic and professional expertise on sports leadership, communication, project planning, organizational management, lobbying and education. Furthermore, we have an extended national and international network of partners, companies and organisations that support our partners with their expertise, and technical and financial support.",
