At that time the country was called Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes who had an ambition to build a railway line from Cape to Cairo and to develop the hinterland economically. With the coming of Independence from Britain in 1980, the country's name changed to Zimbabwe and a few years later, the capital city's name was changed from Salisbury to Harare. The city remains the capital and economic hub of Zimbabwe. In Harare there are now ten Rotary Clubs.\r\n\r\nUp to June 1997 the country formed part of Rotary International District 9250 but at present is one of the four countries of District 9210. Previously the Kingdom of Swaziland and the northern and eastern parts of the then province of Transvaal in South Africa were part of the District. Now the District encompasses Malawi, Zambia and the northern half of Mozambique in addition to the whole of Zimbabwe. This covers a large area of sub-equatorial Africa. So the District Governor annually has a daunting task to visit all the Clubs in this large District.\r\n\r\nAt the time of redistricting there was disappointment at not being able to meet annually close Rotarian friends from Swaziland and South Africa at future assemblies and conferences. However it has created opportunities for further friendships with Rotarians in less developed neighbouring countries in Southern Africa and provided almost unlimited opportunities for service.\r\n\r\nLike the club which sponsored the formation of RC of Harare more than seven decades ago, the Johannesburg Rotary Club, the first on the African continent, the average age of membership continues to be the highest in R I District 9210. Because of this, the club has a goodly number of members now in retirement, so steps continue to be taken to induct younger members. The weekly luncheon attendance by the 70s plus age group, however, remains regular. Their wise counsel on the service committees particularly, based on their experience with major projects many initiated by them in earlier days, is much appreciated and where possible these 'old timers' continue to support the ongoing ones. Membership in general of course realizes that there is the continuous need for an inflow of new younger members to maintain the dynamism for which the club is so well known.\r\n\r\nThe RC of Harare boasts of having provided no less than seven District Governors. Nadat het Hof in augustus 2009 moest sluiten vergadert de club wekelijks op donderdagavond in café-restaurant De Ster aan de Overdamstraat.\r\n\r\nIn de Kloosterzande-tijd voerde de club een tiental jaren de naam Rotary Club Hulst- Hontenisse om de streekgebondenheid duidelijk te maken. Maar na de fusie tussen de gemeenten Hulst en Hontenisse is de oorspronkelijke naam R.C. Hulst weer van kracht. De club telt steeds rond 45 vrouwelijke en mannelijke leden, met een maximum van 50. Working among underprivileged communities of rural Nepal, RRN has been implementing integrated community development programmes and projects at the grassroots level and policy advocacy, lobbying and networking at local, national, and international levels.\r\n\r\nRRN embraces a two-pronged approach for its development intervention: (i) Working with peasant people by implementing integrated community development projects and action-oriented research focusing on the poorest and most vulnerable people/groups in rural areas and (ii) Policy research, advocacy, campaign and lobbying at the local, national, and international levels on the root causes of poverty; the problems of the resource poor; and social, economic, and cultural rights; and the right to development and environmental degradation.\r\n\r\nRRN is the only national NGO with extended capacity and development outreach that has successfully implemented various result-oriented, rights-based, integrated community development initiatives addressing the frustrated expectations of the poor, marginalised, vulnerable and conflict affected people. RRN has a proven track record of its engagement for economic, social and cultural rights and right to development by implementing pro-people development programmes, facilitating to exercise the community owned and managed integrated approaches, especially in the conflict sensitive societies.\r\n\r\nAll development programmes of RRN focus on the fourfold approach of Rural Reconstruction as the foundation upon which its programme and project activities are based on:\r\n• Education: to combat illiteracy and ignorance and provide exposure to the outside world\r\n• Sustainable livelihoods: to fight poverty and hunger\r\n• Health: to prevent disease and promote rights to health\r\n• Self-Government: to overcome civic inertia through institutional development leading to self-reliance\r\n\r\nSince 1997, RRN has enjoyed the Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and is also accredited to the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Currently, it is hosting the Secretariat of Right to Food Network, Secretariat of the South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE) – a South Asia regional alliance of mass based civil society organisations and individuals and the International Secretariat of LDC Watch. They represent several of RRN’s civil society alliances with which RRN is associated to fight against poverty and hunger and for the realization of human rights, social justice, democracy and peace.
