"description": "The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is an international African organisation headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya.\r\n\r\nAMREF's vision is Better Health for Africa:.\r\nAMREF's mission is to ensure that every African can enjoy the right to good health by helping to create vibrant networks of informed communities that work with empowered health care providers in strong health systems. AMREF has 50 years’ experience in health development. In 1957, three surgeons founded the Flying Doctors Service of East Africa, laying the foundation for what is now one of the continent’s leading health development and research organisations. Today, AMREF implements its projects through country programmes in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan and South Africa. Training and consulting support are provided to an additional 30 African countries.\r\n\r\nKnowledge is a core product of AMREF’s activities. AMREF implements projects to learn, and shares this evidence-based knowledge with others to advocate for changes in health policy and practice. Based on the belief that health is a basic human right, AMREF seeks to empower communities to take control of their health and to establish a vibrant and participatory health care system made up of communities, health workers and governments.\r\n\r\nOur Strategic Focus:\r\nAMREF’s strategy seeks to strengthen health systems and to design and enhance interventions that improve people’s access to health through their active participation. Informed by Africa’s health crisis, AMREF’s comparative advantage and five decades’ experience of working with communities and health systems in the region, the AMREF strategy will be pursued through three interdependent programme themes:\r\n- Community Partnering for Better Health\r\n- Health Systems and Policy Research\r\n- Capacity Building",

"description": "PROTOS aims at facilitating sustainable and empowering development processes that are well integrated in the local cultural and social context and that strive to improve the general well being of the destitute groups in the South. In that view, water is a key element. Given its expertise in this field, PROTOS particularly stands up for equitable, sustainable and participatory water management in the North and the South.\r\nEquitable water management assumes solidarity amongst all users, whereby each individual has the right to sufficient water quantities for a well-balanced human development.\r\nSustainable water management seeks to optimally use the available water sources without threatening the other users, the environment or the future.\r\nParticipatory water management requires the involvement of each individual and community, including disadvantaged groups, providing the opportunity for them to take control of their own future. In this, a fair gender balance has to be respected.\r\nPROTOS wants to achieve these objectives by:\r\n- Supporting participatory development programmes in the South: via an improvement of access to water, and of distribution and/or valorisation of water, PROTOS aims to improve the socio-economic situation of the local population.\r\n- Being a lever: by strengthening the capacities, the vision and the position of organisations that are able to capitalize on the knowledge fostered by these programmes and capable of making profit of this knowledge in the future.\r\n- Stimulating the cooperation between all parties involved in the planning and implementation of local development, including the civil society organisations and the local authorities.\r\n- Stimulating the debate on the equitable, sustainable and participatory water resources management in both the North and the South. The experiences of PROTOS and its partner organisations are able to contribute to this debate.",

Other parts are suffering from increasing poverty, erosion of education possibilities or augmenting violence and human rights violations.\r\nThe development challenges remain large in the new millennium. Against the widening gap between the few rich and the many poor, Helvetas sets its vision of a society:\r\n- which ensures that the basic needs of all people – men and women – are met and that they can live a life in dignity and peace\r\n- which guarantees all people the right of self-determination and allows them to participate in shaping their social and political environment\r\n- which manages its natural resources in a sustainable manner\r\n- which is based on organisations and institutions adhering to the principles of accountability, transparency, quality and efficiency\r\nFor its international programmes, Helvetas’ mission is:\r\n- to collaborate in a participatory manner with and for the benefit of the poor and underprivileged society groups in the poor regions of development and transition countries\r\n- to further promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences between Switzerland and the partner countries as well as among the partner countries\r\n- to strengthen local structures and sustainable development and to promote human rights\r\n- to develop suitable measures that prevent or mitigate violent conflicts and contribute to mutually agreed and sustainable resolutions",

For historical and economic reasons heritage awareness and preservation have suffered a great deal in Malawi.\r\n\r\nMlambe Foundation aims to contribute to the conservation of cultural heritage in Malawi and to promote cultural and economic sustainable development in the country inspired by Malawi's rich traditions and past. The Foundation seeks to achieve these aims by:\r\n\r\n- Education and research with regard to tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Malawi\r\n- Supporting and initiating projects concerning aspects of Malawian cultural heritage, not excluding any ethnic group or historical period.\r\n- Supporting activities that lead to greater publicity and awareness of Malawian cultural heritage, and thus its preservation.\r\n- Lobbying for conservation measures with the Malawi government.\r\n- Promoting rural poverty reduction by sustainable, community-based cultural resource management\r\n",
