Belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, its main objective is to develop and promote research that will help bring about scientific and technological progress, and it is prepared to collaborate with Spanish and foreign entities in order to achieve this aim.\r\nThe Institute of Heritage Sciences (Incipit) was created by the CSIC in January 2010 by resolution of its Board of Trustees. Felipe Criado-Boado, as Research Professor of CSIC, is its director. The Incipit has, in fact, a 20-year history and a complex institutional evolution. It started in 1991 as a Research Group devoted to Landscape Archaeology, in the University of Santiago de Compostela. Since 2001 joined the Spanish National Research Council as Landscape Archaeology Laboratory and within the Institute of Galician Studies “Padre Sarmiento”. In 2009, after the conception of a scientific project focused on the interdisciplinary study of heritage, the group is reformulated as Heritage Laboratory (LaPa) to approach and address the problem of how heritage is constituted and valued from a broader and deeply interdisciplinar research project. By supplying developing countries with high-quality refurbished IT equipment that is donated by Western countries, Close the Gap creates practical, social and sustainable solutions that enable people to bring about a true change in their lives through the use of IT.\r\n\r\nSince its founding in 2003, Close the Gap has managed to reinstall tens of thousands of PCs donated by companies in Europe, offering local communities and individuals access to information. With the right tools, people in developing countries can significantly improve the quality of their lives. Access to communication technologies is predominantly vital in enabling them to reach this objective. Computers are used for a large variety of applications and have consequently become an essential part of the personal, educational and professional world. One tends to forget that one of the basic assets provided by computers is access to all kinds of information. Hence, the difference that access to information can make to a person’s life is immeasurable.\r\n\r\nWhen donations are made, Close the Gap’s logistic partner collects the IT equipment. It is then checked by professionals, repaired if needed and reconfigured before it is sent off to a designated project.\r\n\r\nClose the Gap is mostly active in Africa, but also in other developing countries in South-East Asia and South-America.
