We facilitate contracts between smallholder producers and agricultural companies, bringing together actors from both supply and demand sides to catalyse a specific enterprise development.",

"description": "Training for the Water Sector started in 1960 with a unit in the Hydraulic Department of Public Works to train water supply operators. In 1970, the unit was upgraded to a training section under the same Department. When the Water Department was transformed to a fully-fledged Ministry of Water Development in 1974, the training section became the Water Development Staff Training School. In 1985, the Institute became a national water training institution and was henceforth referred to as Kenya Water Institute (KEWI). An Act of Parliament to establish the Kenya Water Institute was enacted by Parliament in 2001 and assented to by the President on 31st December 2001. According to the KEWI ACT (No.11 of 2001) the Institute is a semi-autonomous corporate body serving the entire water sector in Kenya. The Applied Water Department was merged by training to form the new KEWI in 2003.",

It is a state corporation established by an Act of Parliament Cap 376 with the mandate to conserve and manage wildlife in Kenya, and to enforce related laws and regulations.\r\n\r\nThe challenges facing wildlife and biodiversity conservation in Kenya are many and varied. They include climate change, habitat degradation and loss, forest depletion, tourism market volatility, human wildlife conflict brought on by population growth and changing land use habits of communities that co-exist with wildlife as well as wildlife crime.\r\n\r\nTo tackle these issues, we employ a multi-pronged approach and strategies and engage different interest groups, stakeholders and partners.\r\n\r\nKWS undertakes conservation and management of wildlife resources outside protected areas in collaboration with stakeholders. It is our goal to work with others to conserve, protect and sustainably manage wildlife resources. The community wildlife program of KWS in collaboration with others encourages biodiversity conservation by communities living on land essential to wildlife, such as wildlife corridors and dispersal lands outside parks and reserves. The premise is that \"if people benefit from wildlife and other natural resources, then they will take care of these resources.\"\r\n\r\nOur Vision\r\n\"To save the last great species and places on earth for humanity”\r\n\r\nOur Mission\r\n“To sustainably conserve, manage, and enhance Kenya's wildlife, its habitats, and provide a wide range of public uses in collaboration with stakeholders for posterity”",

"description": "FIT Resources is a not for profit institution whose mandate is to alleviate poverty by promoting sustainable and effective Business Development Services (BDS) for Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs). FIT is part of a network of organizations initiated by ILO in six African Countries in East Central and West Africa in the early 90s. FIT has identified personnel to be a key resource in development and therefore places Capacity Building at the core of its activities.\r\n\r\nFIT believes that effective services that blend well with the objectives of development agencies, governments and those of target beneficiaries will increase growth and generate employment. Our strategy for sustainable livelihoods is to improve the supply of sustainable development services and skills to communities and SMEs through capacity building and access to markets and or services.\r\n\r\nIn Kenya and most countries in Sub Saharan Africa 80% of the population reside in rural areas with approximately 90% deriving their livelihoods from agriculture and agriculture related activities. The highest poverty levels are also to be found in the rural areas. FIT has therefore concentrated on promoting initiatives in the rural areas aimed at promoting agriculture as a business.\r\n\r\nFIT therefore believes that targeting the poorest people to be able to participate in their own development will spur sustainable poverty alleviation across board. Hence FIT Programmes have focused on promoting initiatives that are cost effective and can be implemented by the people themselves.\r\n\r\nFIT Resources offers exceptional collective knowledge and experience in innovative approaches to agricultural & enterprise development, intervention design, implementation and evaluation, management, and diversification of income resources among the rural poor. Our programmes have helped many entrepreneurs and development organizations to restructure and rationalize and commercialize their activities in order to improve wealth creation leading to improved and sustainable livelihoods.\r\n\r\n\r\nWhat we do\r\n\r\nBroadly, FIT promotes SME development through:\r\n\r\n•\tResearch\r\n•\tDesign and implementation of programmes\r\n•\tProject analysis, design and or management \r\n•\tMonitoring and Evaluation of SME projects\r\n•\tCapacity building for institutions who work with SMEs\r\n\r\nMain Focus\r\n\r\nFIT works with and through:\r\n\r\n•\tMedia houses in the development and implementation of commercially viable media programmes that benefit smallholder farmers mainly in rural communities. FIT builds capacities of Media staff and consultants,\r\n•\tDonors, Governments and trade associations that promote smallholder farmers in specific sub-sectors especially honey and the horticultural sub-sectors. FIT builds capacities of staff and consultants working for governments and donors and,\r\n•\tFinancial institutions that support micro-entrepreneurs in agribusiness. FIT builds capacities of staff and consultants in financial institutions. \r\n\r\n\r\nStandards and Monitoring\r\n\r\nAll FIT projects are subject to continuous monitoring, feedback and regular reviews to ensure that the assignments are completed within prescribed timeframe and emerging issues consistently addressed.\r\n\r\nInstitutional Links\r\n\r\nNetworking is a fundamental component of FIT’s business strategy. FIT was established by ILO as a network of organisations in six East, Central and West Africa. The network provides FIT enormous opportunities experience sharing and support amongst the network members. FIT has received support from various donor agencies who include the Dutch Government, ILO Technical Assistance, Department for International Development (DfID) and Micro Enterprise Support Programme of the European Union.\r\n",

"description": "Africa Alive! is a youth-serving organization started in 1998 with a vision to build and empower a healthier HIV/AIDS free generation of African youth. The mission of Africa Alive! is to promote positive behavior change among young people through advocacy, empowerment, partnership and resource/community mobilization, in order to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa. \r\n\r\nThe initiatives developed and undertaken by Africa Alive! over the past years have adopted the strategic approach of creating a favorable environment for, and promoting broad based community discourse on healthy and high risk sexual behaviors. The organization’s mandate promotes the full participation of young people at every level of programme implementation. Africa Alive! uses audience and message strategy of edutainment (entertainment education). \r\n\r\nThis approach combines entertainment and education to attract the attention and provide a forum for delivering behaviour change messages. Africa Alive! reaches African youth by tapping into popular, creative channels of communication that appeal to youth in Africa and all over the world such as;\r\n• Radio and TV drama that help educate and promote safe behaviours by depicting and discussing HIV/AIDS prevention and dealing with the decision-making process regarding sexual activity \r\n• Puppetry- using puppetry and folk media as an entertainment and educational tool of reaching the youth with appropriate messages on their reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention, including community sensitization and mobilization on the uptake of other RH services such as STI screening, FP services and VCT.\r\n• Traveling road shows (music performance and quiz) that reach both urban and rural areas, getting youth involved in talking about HIV/AIDS\r\n• Radio and TV variety/talk shows with phone-ins, discussions, and mini-draws addressing HIV/AIDS\r\n• Peer education outreach in schools\r\n• Training and working with young music artiste and club DJs as youth advocates on RH/HIV/AIDS issues and\r\n• Comics with HIV/AIDS prevention messages.\r\n• Sporting events with prevention messages at break, on tickets, and at HIV/AIDS information booths in and around the venue.\r\n",

"description": "The operations of Practical Action's regional office in Nairobi are consolidated across four geographical clusters spread across the northern, central, and southwest parts of Kenya. These are: Somali and Karamoja clusters in the north, the Lake Victoria cluster in the south west of the country and the Nairobi-Nakuru cluster in central Kenya.\r\n\r\nThe work carried out by Practical Action regional office in Kenya is centred on three themes:\r\n\r\nReducing vulnerability\r\nTo strengthen the ability of poor women and men to use technology to cope with threats to their livelihoods from natural disasters, environmental degradation and civil conflict.\r\n\r\nMaking markets work for poor people\r\nTo enable poor women and men to use technologies effectively in systems of production, processing and marketing to build secure livelihoods.\r\n\r\nImproving access to infrastructure services\r\nTo improve the access of poor women and men to locally managed infrastructure services.\r\nThe three areas of work are supervised and guided by three programme team leaders. The programme implementation team consists of project managers who are responsible for managing the different projects that come under each broad theme area.\r\n\r\nIn addition, there is also a Quality Assurance and Fundraising Unit, which incorporates: fundraising, communications and the resource centre. The Unit not only provides support to the organization by giving inputs to evaluation and monitoring of projects and by liaising with donors and funding organizations but also facilitates information sharing of the project experiences, profile raising and financial support for the organisation. It aims to strengthen Practical Action-EA's presence as a lead authority in poverty alleviation through the use of appropriate technologies and processes within the East Africa region. The Eastern Africa office is managed by the Eastern Africa Regional Director, Grace Mukasa.",

The areas are: -\r\n\r\n• Eastern Area has high population density with an average of 1/4 an acre farm plots per household. 60% of the farm plots are rocky and hilly area.\r\n\r\n• Mountain area has rich soils with very low productivity per unit area as reported by experience during the course of implementation of food security programs.\r\n\r\n• Lake Area has large parcels of land with sand and infertile soils. The area covers Busia district, which is ranked among the poorest districts in Kenya with over 50% of its adult population being illiterate.\r\n\r\n• Sugar belt area, has high population per square kilometer with 90% of the households depending on sugarcane farming for their livelihood. Each area is headed by area program officer and at least 8 community development facilitator who are responsible for day to day facilitation of the participatory development. Our main area of competency lies in capacity building of development interventions through people own processes.",

"description": "SANA is a registered NGO in Kenya established from the former Rural Domestic Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (RDWSSP), a bilateral programme between the Government of Kenya (GoK) and the Government of the Netherlands (GoN), which ran between 1983 and 2001.\r\n\r\nSANA was developed to encourage water and sanitation development in Nyanza region.\r\n\r\nThe former programme, RDWSSP reached out to 3,000 communities and facilitated the installation of 16,400 latrines and 1,500 water points in all districts of Nyanza Province. (See map on the right). SANA has prepared a 5 year plan to implement a further 1,000 water points and 10,000 sand units\r\n\r\nDistricts covered by SANA in Nyanza Province\r\nInterest in the sector has been growing over the years through campaigns both nationally and internationally leading to formulation of Vision 21, PHAST and the emergence of the new water policy in Kenya, Sessional Paper No. 1 (1999) on Water Resources Development and Management.\r\nThe immediate stakeholders in the former RDWSSP garnered support and established SANA, which was registered in October 2000. Since then efforts towards positioning SANA within the water and sanitation sector have attracted considerable attention from patner stakeholders, including the local community and leaders from Districts in the Province.",
