"description": "The Education Local Expertise Centre (ELECU) was established in Uganda in 2009 through a consultative process by Edukans and partners to achieve the following:\r\n•\tprovide possibilities for a more frequent dialogue among Edukans partners,\r\n•\timprove the quality of educational programs, and\r\n•\tdevelop a policy that effectively addresses the local country context\r\n\r\nELECU became operational, fully registered in Uganda in 2011. The overall goal is improving access to quality basic education for all children through effective coordination and strengthened capacity of partners. ELECU works through implementing partners to deliver a program-based approach guided by the Education Program Plan (EPP) document. Partners either work individually or in small clusters towards achieving the country’s overall educational goal.\r\n\r\nVision: A society empowered through equal access to quality and sustainable basic education\r\n\r\nMission: To coordinate and build capacity of partners to improve access to quality basic education to children in Uganda for poverty reduction\r\n\r\nGoal: Improved access to quality basic education through effective coordination and strengthened capacity of partners in Uganda. This will be achieved through:\r\n• Facilitating, supporting, and coordinating development of programmes that promote quality of basic education.\r\n• Identifying, and developing the capacity of implementing partners to effectively address the needs in basic education in Uganda.\r\n• Enhancing the coordination and capacity building role of ELECU.",

EMF identifies, promotes and incubates small-scale projects that are innovative, practical, solution-oriented, and have a broad impact in the target country. We achieve this through providing three types of services:\r\n\r\n1) Think tank:\r\nWe watch trends and set out a vision on the kind of innovation that would alleviate the shortage of clean water in developing countries. We spread awareness of third world water issues through articles, documentaries and workshops.\r\n \r\n2) Match Maker:\r\nWe build networks and translate trends and visions from the think tank into viable projects and initiatives by bringing key partners together.\r\n\r\n3) Incubator:\r\nWe initiate pilot projects and compile business plans and road maps to scale up successful pilots.",

"description": "The East-West Management Institute works to strengthen democratic societies by bringing together government, civil society, and the private sector – to build accountable, capable and transparent institutions. Founded in 1988, as an independent not-for-profit organization, EWMI’s work began the year before the wall came down, with the challenge of crafting functioning democratic systems in transitioning post-soviet societies. We learned – in our initial work across central and eastern Europe, and in the decades that followed around the world - that a collaborative approach involving civil society, government and the private sector is the key to ensuring that citizens exercise their rights, and institutions are accountable for protecting them. This leads to more just and prosperous societies.\r\n\r\nEWMI addresses complex challenges with practical, cross-cutting solutions. EWMI specializes in targeted, locally relevant initiatives that foster partnerships, and cross-sector collaboration, from assisting the state and local advocates in policy creation and reform to engaging in court administration, local economic development and technical support to civil society. EWMI does not offer off-the-shelf or cookie cutter solutions to these issues, because it appreciates from experience that each local context is unique.",

"description": "The East London Child and Youth Care Centre have been in existence since 1924. In the early years, emphasis was placed on custodial care, i.e. feeding, clothing, education and housing the orphans of war. The Home was in the Malcomess House, which was run as a large institution.\r\n\r\nTwenty-Two years ago, the Children’s Home acquired 5 houses in areas around the city. The children are now housed in group-homes, to create a hild-friendly environment. They range in ages from birth to 18 years. Each home can care for approximately 11 to 13 children. Most of the children in care are from disadvantaged communities, or dysfunctional families, and have been severely neglected; these include our HIV positive children. On average, there are around 121 children in full-time care.\r\n\r\nThe services of the East London Child and Youth Care Centre have developed over the last 84 years from purely residential care programmes to include community-based programmes focused on prevention and early intervention. A child should only be institutionalised as a last resort, and the emphasis is on keeping the child in his/her own environment.\r\n\r\nIn the nearby Fort Grey informal settlement, the Ubuntu Care, Development and Empowerment Centre was established in 1999. The centre provides a one-stop facility, where the community can come for support, guidance and assistance when in crisis (rape, drug abuse, violence, family problems, etc.). The centre provides aftercare facilities for children from the Sinomonde, Fort Grey and Santa Primary schools. A childcare in schools programme is operating in Willow Park School and Fort Grey Primary. An HTA Project (High Transmission Area) is also provided in this area. The Isibindi programme was launched in Fort Grey and Ncera Village three in March 2008.\r\n\r\nIn March 2008 the directors of the House on the Rock Section 21 Company approached the East London Child and Youth Care center to assist in managing the Centre. After consultation with the Department of Social Development it was agreed that we would manage the center until a long-term solution was found.\r\n\r\nThe services and programmes offered are diverse and adapted to the needs of the community served by the East London Child and Youth Care Centre. The Centre aims to not duplicate services, but network with existing organisations where possible in order to provide comprehensive services throughout the community.",

"description": "The Dreamhouse was officially founded in February 2009. However the history of interaction with the street children community goes a long way back. It started in 2000 with a simple activity, playing sports games (mostly soccer) with the street children in Universitas Gadjah Mada every saturday afternoon. At that time several students from the Shine community invited street children from intersections like Korem/Gramedia and Pingit to play together. This sporting activity still continue until now, and is now located in the spacious area in front of Graha Sabha Pramana every Sunday afternoon.",

"description": "The Department of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS) was established in 1976 as the Kenya Rangeland Ecological Monitoring Unit (KREMU). The overall objective of DRSRS is to gather and analyse data and information regarding the natural resources of Kenya and to provide interdisciplinary analysis of such information as it relates to natural resources planning, management and policy formulation at a national, regional and district level. In assessing natural resources, DRSRS primarily employs aerial survey methods in gathering data, while ground surveys are undertaken primarily for ground-truthing. Other modern technology including satellite images (NOAA, Landsat and Spot) and Geographic Information System (GIS) facilitate development and use of database of natural resources. Systematic reconnaissance flight (SRF) surveys over the Kenyan rangelands have been used to collect data on wildlife and livestock distribution and abundance and environmental information are collected. The overriding concern in implementing these surveys has been to maintain continuity in procedures such that consistency of the data is maintained. Consequently, these data are valuable source of information on the distribution, abundance and trend of wildlife/livestock populations and environmental conditions within the Kenya rangelands.",
