The World Bank demanded in 2005 a total withdrawal of the state in Burundi in the coffee sector and the privatization of the 133 public pulping plants. To prepare to play the important role in the privatization process of the coffee sector , CNAC members were encouraged to join together in cooperatives to defend their interests in a collective way and manage all parts of the production process from the nursery until export and thus benefiting from the added value of the production of specialty coffee , certified coffee, and fair trade. Since, 104 cooperatives of coffee growers have emerged around the washing stations throughout the country. But among the 104 cooperatives, only 20 cooperatives have already built their washing stations and are grouped in a Union COCOCA, exporting coffee of its members.
