"description": " Equity Group Foundation [EGF] was established in 2006 in recognition of the need to scale up the existing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives by the Equity Bank Group.\r\n\r\nThe Foundation acts as the institutional home for the Group’s social initiatives and interventions. Since its inception, the Foundation has significantly enhanced the coordination of CSR interventions for Equity Group. The Foundation’s aim is to catalyze the socio-economic prosperity of the people of Africa by giving opportunity to the millions at the bottom of the pyramid to be incorporated into the modern economy.\r\n\r\nHaving demonstrated scalability, impact and high return on investment, the Foundation has started forging partnerships with development organizations who wish to do good to society without duplicating effort and/or investing in infrastructure. This innovative and creative vehicle has fundamentally transformed the concept of philanthropy and corporate social responsibility.\r\n\r\nWhile Equity Group Foundation champions the social economic transformation of the people of Africa and seeks partnerships along six cluster thematic areas, Equity Bank provides the infrastructure of delivery hence reducing the operational costs for the Foundation and increasing the rate of return on any social investment.",

"description": "The Ecological Management Foundation (EMF) is a typical non-profit, network organization: the head office is based in Amsterdam and staffed by a committed group of part-time employees and volunteers; several partner organizations around the world share the same ideals and ambitions and provide support where and when needed.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, EMF is dedicated to improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities in developing countries. EMF identifies, promotes and incubates small-scale projects that are innovative, practical, solution-oriented, and have a broad impact in the target country. We achieve this through providing three types of services:\r\n\r\n1) Think tank:\r\nWe watch trends and set out a vision on the kind of innovation that would alleviate the shortage of clean water in developing countries. We spread awareness of third world water issues through articles, documentaries and workshops.\r\n \r\n2) Match Maker:\r\nWe build networks and translate trends and visions from the think tank into viable projects and initiatives by bringing key partners together.\r\n\r\n3) Incubator:\r\nWe initiate pilot projects and compile business plans and road maps to scale up successful pilots.",

The Stockholm Conference proposed a specialized agency within the UN Secretariat to facilitate coordinated efforts among States towards protection of the environment. In 1950, the School was upgraded to an Agricultural College offering diploma programmes. The Egerton Agricultural College Ordinance was enacted in 1955. In 1979, the Government of Kenya and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded a major expansion of the institution. In 1986, Egerton Agricultural College was gazetted as a constituent college of the University of Nairobi. The following year, 1987, marked the establishment of Egerton University through an Act of Parliament.\r\n\r\nEgerton University has three (3) Campuses and one Campus College. This foundation was founded December 2007 but the official registration process was completed August 2008. The goal of the initiative is to raise money and fund projects that help our children getting an honest level of education which in turn will benefit the entire community. They are working closely with some international organisations and act on their behalf or together with them in order to help controlling projects in Nigeria. \r\n",

"description": "Denys doesn’t innovate in one specialism, but as a total business in several disciplines: water, energy, mobility, refurbishment, civil engineering, special techniques and other specialised building techniques. In each of those complementary areas of expertise Denys has confirmed its position as a niche player and shown ourselves to be a global reference with high added value. Together all these disciplines form a total business, the Denys Group, a preferred partner for the most complex building projects and infrastructure work. Its well-considered decision to diversify was without a doubt the primary motor for growth. The growth model is based on three pillars: diversification, innovation and export.",

"description": "Making water and sanitation available in poor countries is a problem massive in size and urgency, hundreds of millions of units are necessary right now. \r\nOnly Gandhi's solution -self-reliance- can provide this, and this with the means of the poor only. If the billions of rural poor only have a bush knife as tool, then the water pump they may need should be made with only that bush knife and resources available to them. \r\n\r\nIf these billions of rural poor would be motivated by the quality of an adequate design made available to them they would put this information to practice. \r\n\r\nHow with such limited means crucial quality can be achieved is mission and task of Foundation \"Demotech, design for self-reliance\". Demotech finds such solutions by tenacious research in its laboratory and during field work, Experience gained is shared with for whom it matters in its website, video-reporting and published papers.\r\n\r\nThe Demotech Rope Pump design from 1975, first field tested in 1976 in Burkina Faso, embodied many of the required qualities for unsupported self-sustained use at the Bottom of the Pyramid. Demotech and others have reported where, when and how this happened. \r\nPopularity of the Rope Pump design induced some NGO's to partly subsidized providing of this water pump, often with a more centralized manufacture with industrial means. In practice this led to the same failure of other industrial produced hand pumps due to difficulty to maintain and find spare parts while numbers of pumps realized where a fraction of set targets.\r\n\r\nOn our website you will find many projects that are designed with a similar approach. Examples are, Hydraulic Rampumps, Furniture, Administration system, Sanitation, Transport, Engineering for the Bottom of the Pyramid work shops, etc. \r\n\r\nAgain Demotech sees it as its task to generate, field test and publish a design for a hand driven water pump that fulfills all criteria for rapid self-reliant and self-sustained application required for reaching Millennium Development Goals. Design targets are set higher then in 1975. Functional performance to be equal or better then existing hand pumps to depth of 70 meters. Cost within the reach of the extreme poor (<1$/p/day). Made with local materials and tools only, according to local craft practice. Self-explaining setup and construction limits need for training to demonstration and peer-to-peer spread of knowledge. \r\n\r\nBench marks of success will be immediate un-invited, un-subsidized copying of the water pump where demonstrated and needed. A bench mark that takes more time to set is development of income generation by manufacture and local selling of the rope pump. A third bench mark is the occurrence of change in life-style because of easier access to water. \r\n\r\nRe-design is Demotech's job. Demotech explores and puts to practice the possibilities of a different approach to development, which takes into account the social construction of technology and critically deals with the process of their innovation and implementation. Demotech treats people as creators of development and active collaborators in the process of shaping technology.\r\n\r\nAll the work that it takes to realize such bench marks describes best how our organization Demotech functions and performs: all but easy going!",

"description": "DADTCO is a social enterprise pursuing poverty alleviation with entrepreneurial zeal, business methods and the courage to innovate and to prevent soil depletion. They process cassava roots in a mobile factory called an AMPU (Autonomous Mobile Processing Unit) into a new non-perishable product (cassava cake) with which a whole new market has been developed. Cassava is solely grown by small scale farmers and with this innovation the small holder farmers are guaranteed of a market for their cassava. As a root cassava is very perishable, it will deteriorate within 48hr after harvesting. DADTCO developed a patented processing technology that allows processing cassava roots in the field near the farmer. Cassava cake is far more compact than cassava roots, its transport is three times more efficient than roots. Cassava cake can is a raw material for beer, flour, starch and glucose. The AMPU created the bridge between thousands of small scale farmers in Africa and the large scale processing industry.",

"description": "Imagine homeless children, parents who cannot afford to pay school fees, or an orphan who is the only caretaker of his or her siblings. Poverty and conflict have a disastrous effect on a child’s healthy development.\r\n\r\nEveryone agrees that a caring home for every child is something we all want. The same goes for finding foster families for those children who might otherwise be left homeless, or providing family coaches to support the families of children with disabilities. And finally, everyone wants to be able to provide families that are living in extreme poverty with financial support to prevent their children from having to work at a young age.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, all children are entitled to adequate education that is provided by qualified teachers and an involved government, with parents’ committees that stimulate their sons and daughters to go to school.\r\n\r\nA comprehensive approach is needed to enable all children of each family to go to school. Such an approach not only has to stimulate all parties involved to tackle the issue, including public authorities, parents, students and teachers, but also has to reward the achievement of good results.",

They are also the ones who will have to leave behind their homes, jobs and farmland when fleeing from acts of war. Often they do not have anything or anyone to fall back on.\r\n\r\nDisasters affect structural development, destroying investments of years. This means that the most effective disaster response demands synergy between disaster risk reduction and humanitarian aid. Using our 100 years of experience, Cordaid connects emergency aid with sustainable development.\r\n\r\nWe work with communities and organisations to reduce the impact of disasters and be prepared when disasters do strike.\r\n\r\nCordaid is able to offer immediate help in the most remote areas of the world through our extensive network of partners.\r\n\r\nTogether with local communities and organisations, Cordaid works toward reducing the impacy of disasters.",

However, resources are often more of a curse: they are at the root of severe environmental damage, violations of human rights, conflicts, and poverty.\r\n\r\nDeveloping countries that possess natural resources are the stage for power struggles between multinational corporations and governments. And the stakes are only increasing as the prices are rising and shortages occur. People often do not have sufficient powers to protect their own interests. This has to change and it can be changed.\r\n\r\nIt is about time that communities benefit from the resources their land provides. In order to achieve this goal, an open dialogue based on equality is arranged between companies, governments and the public. Such dialogues aim at moving them to fair and specific agreements. That is what Cordaid does.\r\n\r\nCordaid facilitates an open dialogue so communities can flourish.",

"description": "Between today and 2015, 700,000 mothers will not survive delivering their children unless the available healthcare improves. The rate of maternal mortality is disturbingly high, particularly in fragile countries such as the Central African Republic, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Corruption and a failing administration continually impair healthcare in these countries.\r\n\r\nThe time has come to make healthcare accessible to all people regardless of whether they live in rich or poor areas. The approach used tightens controls and enables patients to take part in deciding their own treatment. In addition, staff remuneration has been made dependent on the achieved results in order to motivate staff to go the extra mile. An approach is called for that not only limits patient contribution to healthcare but also improves its accessibility.\r\n\r\nAll in all, it is time for change. Healthy women are the pillars of both their families and of society. Not only should they be informed how to stay healthy, but also that it is their right to do so; healthcare must be accessible to them. Medical supervision both before and during their pregnancy is crucial. Cordaid works on improving this for all women.\r\n\r\nCordaid aims at providing affordable and accessible healthcare to all, which it has done for many years. Its approach -- using the most recent developments and finance methods -- is followed throughout the world.",

"description": "Slums are areas full of potential. Almost half of the urban world population is living in slums and they want to progress in life. They provide a wealth of creativity and talent and are potential consumers.\r\n\r\n‘Smart solutions for slums’ is what Cordaid is working on. We connect the people living in slums with companies, authorities, knowledge centers and investors. It is our aim to work jointly toward homes, electricity, sanitation, clean drinking water, waste disposal and safety. This should result in both livable and sustainable neighborhoods.\r\n\r\nCordaid enables creativity and ideas to be converted into actions for the future. To achieve a cost-effective and future-proof strategy, Cordaid works together with companies and other stakeholders.\r\n\r\nCordaid sees potential opportunities in slums. It has done so for many years in seven of the biggest cities in Latin America and Africa: San Salvador, Port-au-Prince, Guatemala City, Cape Town, Nairobi, Kisumu and Addis Ababa.",

"description": "Close the Gap is an international not-for-profit organisation that actively helps to bridge the digital divide. The objective is to assist in improving local knowledge and putting local talent to use by offering cost-efficient IT-solutions to projects in developing countries.\r\n\r\nIn the industrialised world, computers are replaced every three to four years, meaning that companies are increasingly looking for sustainable ways to replace their used devices. At the same time, millions of computers are needed in developing countries.\r\n\r\nIt is here that Close the Gap creates win-win situations. By supplying developing countries with high-quality refurbished IT equipment that is donated by Western countries, Close the Gap creates practical, social and sustainable solutions that enable people to bring about a true change in their lives through the use of IT.\r\n\r\nSince its founding in 2003, Close the Gap has managed to reinstall tens of thousands of PCs donated by companies in Europe, offering local communities and individuals access to information. With the right tools, people in developing countries can significantly improve the quality of their lives. Access to communication technologies is predominantly vital in enabling them to reach this objective. Computers are used for a large variety of applications and have consequently become an essential part of the personal, educational and professional world. One tends to forget that one of the basic assets provided by computers is access to all kinds of information. Hence, the difference that access to information can make to a person’s life is immeasurable.\r\n\r\nWhen donations are made, Close the Gap’s logistic partner collects the IT equipment. It is then checked by professionals, repaired if needed and reconfigured before it is sent off to a designated project.\r\n\r\nClose the Gap is mostly active in Africa, but also in other developing countries in South-East Asia and South-America. The organisation mainly supports projects in the socio-educational sector, such as schools, universities, hospitals and other programmes focusing on the improvement of educational and information facilities.\r\n\r\nHowever diverse the projects may be, they all have one common denominator: to focus on advancing both the individual and the community within a spirit of social education.",
