"comment": "The following measures have arisen from the OKP-SEAD project which enable and should ensure the sustainability of the initiative. We will outline the different elements of the sustainability roll-out, it is the combination and diversity of the outcomes that will ensure the sustainability, with a resilient and established team at the fore.\n\n1)\tThe team has developed during the time frame, enduring many challenges and showing resilience and creativity to overcome these. As such the team has grown to be a strong and cohesive team and the momentum is such that there is an energy and desire for the different areas to be ongoing. \n\n2)\tNew didactic approaches which are long-term approaches and changes across TVETs\n•\tIntroduction of blended learning and training of staff on this didactical concept. For \t\tElangeni TVET college the capacitated teachers choose to continue to use the \t\t\tknowledge of Blended Learning in their daily teaching. \n•\tOnline assessments. \n•\tExpansion of the Programme Qualification Mix (PQM) that includes new modes of \tlearning.\n•\tStellenbosch has co-invested in an Agrohub in the “Hybrid Lecture Room” which is \tbeing used by the university as well as local businesses. In the future Stellenbosch \tplans to co-host training days as well as field days as there are orchards on the farm \tthat will be used for demonstration purposes. \n\nIndustry is purposely engaged in redesigning the training approaches, such as study groups, internships, and blended learning, as well as in the content of curricula. This is the situation for both Stellenbosch University and Elangni TVET.\n\n3)\tInfrastructure\n•\tThe e-learning classrooms have been absorbed into both Stellenbosch University and Elangeni TVET and the maintenance and ongoing use will continue as they are now embedded in the methods of teaching and learning. \n•\tNext to the above from 2023 onwards, it is strategically planned to use the video conference classroom by guest lecturers for Agriculture. This will bring in expert knowledge from industry and from other TVET colleges, like Umfolozi, Mthashana and Majuba. There is also a solid plan to work with Mangosuthu University of Technology for their lecturers to deliver topics of interest to Elangeni TVET college students.\n•\tThe broiler house is a huge benefit for Elangeni, Mpumalanga campus because it can house more broilers than the previous facility that the college had. Now the new broiler house has 4 rooms which can house 750 birds every 2 to 3 weeks. This is 250 more than what the previous facility could house. There is a constant supply to customers, while keeping some for teaching and learning. The space is easier to clean. There is more air circulation in the new broiler house, which reduces the building up of ammonia fumes in the rooms. In summary the supply has improved and the conditions of farming improved significantly.\n\n4)\tIndustry-education partnerships\n•\tFrom this project Stellenbosch University with AgriJobs has established an annual partnership review across industry and education partnerships. This is a day for reviewing industry developments and how, and if the education partners are able to respond and adapt. This is co-facilitated and co-led by AgriJobs and Stellenbosch University each year with a growing number of industry partners. Such as with Skyvines and Kromco.\n•\tWith the establishment of an African dialogue series, and the concomitant short course on future food systems the relationship between industry and education has been greatly boosted. These are aimed at higher-level management. For example, the TVET directors and management and government education department workers.\n•\tGenerating Agribusiness start-ups by developing a programme at Elangeni on entrepreneurship to promote small businesses of graduates. \no\tAn AllanGray entrepreneurship challenge opportunity which is being developed for students from Elangeni to participate in as a means of receiving injection funding. \n\n5)\tNew campuses for Elangeni college to grow the skills training component. This is sustainable as the cost and management is undertaken by Elangeni. This campus is for the implementation of agricultural skills training and delivery. Further, this builds experience for the students. The success of both identifying the need and securing the campus has led to the further securement Ndwedwe campus\n•\tInchanga campus.\n•\tNdwedwe campus.\n\n6)\tWomen in Agriculture\n•\tA support network for female emerging farmers has been developed as it became apparent that there was a long-term need for this. The following has emerged:\no\tSocial and community support to aid the multi-dimensional pressures of female farmers.\no\tCareer awareness of divergent opportunities in the various agricultural sectors. \no\tSourcing funding support via SETA and SMME micro-enterprises support.\no\tStellenbosch University focus on supporting female agricultural students with monthly social and academic support. This is now an ongoing initiative that will continue, the usefulness has shown that it is part of the set up. \no\tAgriJobs assisting in linking women graduates to AgriJobs.\n\n7)\tCollaboration across OKP projects\n•\tWater and food OKP projects collaborating to support and work together, this work is planning to continue and grow with further training and support.\no\tWater use efficiency across several sectors of Agriculture (horticultural, poultry, dairy and piggeries).\n\tImpacting on training of students.\n\tDifferent technologies incorporated into curricula.\n\n8)\tDevelopment of MOUs for exchanges and co-learning\n•\tMOU for student exchange between Stellenbosch University and HAS\n•\tMOU between Elangeni and Aeres\nIntentions for MOU’s:\n•\tAeres University of Applied science and Stellenbosch University\n•\tAeres and Elsenburg ATI\nThere is long list of Letter of Intent from stakeholders in South Africa. Reported in Year 1 and 2. These LOI’s will support cooperation in the both South African provinces on a long term basis.\n\n9)\tOther relevant Information:\n•\tStudents who have started their own businesses.\n•\tLobbying by Elangeni for the purchase of additional land for 2 new campuses with focus on technical skill training. As Elangeni is introducing Agriculture courses at Inchanga and Ndwedwe campuses. A lecturer at Mpumalanga campus will be able to deliver a lesson using the video conference classroom at Mpumalanga and connect with the students at Ndwedwe campus which is about 100 kilometers away.\n•\tStaff are going the extra mile for making the partnerships work and keen to see their campuses grow. \n•\tfor the success of partnerships and networks.\n•\tNetworking across institutions and OKP projects for shared learning.",

"comment": "1. Security/Safety\nThe security situation in southern Iraq was deemed poor and unsafe to travel by the NL Embassy and WUR from the start of the project. Originally, we planned to start the field training in Basra, and add Erbil (KRI) later. This was changed and training started in Erbil. To assess the situation, also regarding safety and logistical issues in Kurdistan/Erbil, a kick-off visit to Erbil was planned. The training in Erbil was safe. In Basra, a kick-off in June 2021 was held. From then on, more training was also provided around Basra themes (salinity, water supply), although again regularly no travel was possible due to the classification “red” by BZ. For some time now and until present, all of Iraq (and Basra) remains “red”, except for KRI (Erbil).\nTherefore, the focus of training focused more on regenerative and agroforestry farming practices that are suitable for all of Iraq (degraded + saline conditions), then just on salinity (Basra). Consequently, Nectaerra provided more training (regenerative agriculture) and Salt Doctors less (salinity).\nThe safety situation also prevented the training in NL provided by WUR starting on time, because trainees were not able to visit NL. WUR originally proposed three weeks of training in NL, but started providing online training, while waiting for the moment that trainees would be able to come to NL. This was possible in May 2022 and then again in November 2022. Consequently, it was communicated to Nuffic that the own contribution from Iraq, coming primarily from their visits to NL, would probably not be reached.\n2. Level of trainees\nThe level of trainees was high. All university and Ministry staff had higher (MSc./PhD) formal degrees and good English understanding. Several businesspeople and farmers did not have this background but were experienced enough to follow the courses in good order. Some translation was provided during the visits to NL by Ms. Abouleish (Nectaerra) and Mr. Mahdi (WUR).\n3. Field location\nThe field location in Erbil presented by the University was upon arrival not very suited and understaffed. Therefore, we chose one commercial farm location for field training and theoretical assignments and visited several Iraqi farms for day trips. When we were able to travel to Basra, we conducted the field training on a commercial farm and on the research station of the Univ. Basra. In the Netherlands, we provided training at different open field and greenhouse locations of the WUR (Wageningen, Lelystad, Bleiswijk), and different other sites and farms.\n4. Provision of water and energy\nNo risk during training.\n5. Gender balance\nAt higher levels in the Ministries (Ministry Agriculture; Min. Water Resources; Min. Agriculture & Water Resources KRI) the number of female and male staff seems to be equal. Less can be said of the staff at the participating universities, lying around 25%. Participating farmers and businesspeople were all male. During the project the attendance from universities and farmers increased, lowering the ratio female-male trainees to below 50%.",

Inhouse teacher training capacity in problem-based learning will be further developed. This is needed to maintain sufficient teachers to offer the newly developed master programme, and to develop more PBL based programmes in the future.
