Projekta (Stichting Projekta, organization for women and development)

Initially an “organization for women and development” working mainly on capacity building of grass roots organizations, Projekta has transformed into one of the most important advocacy and one of the most visible civil society organizations in Suriname, focusing on Governance, Participation and Gender Equality. In our work we stress the interlinkage between governance, democracy, gender equality and women’s rights.

Our programs and activities are designed from a rights based perspective. We aim at increasing accountability of duty bearers through advocating and building capacity for participatory policy monitoring; as well as setting up accountability mechanisms with other civil society groups.
At the same time we work on building voice of the rights holders, through capacity building and public awareness; and strengthening civil society in Suriname. By creating spaces for dialogue we bring right holders and duty bearers together- different stakeholders building towards a common agenda at a common table, through processes of dialogue, capacity building and advocacy.
The specific strategy we employ translates into our engagement in almost all sectors and thematic areas concerning all aspects of human rights and sustainable development. Our thematic engagements also depend on our partners need for our assistance.
Projekta also serves as main coordinator of NGO networks in Suriname, recognized by both national government agencies, and international community as primary contact and source of information for engagement with NGO’s and civil society.
