The importance of Internet as a critical tool for the promotion and protection of human rights was prominent at a Forum organised by Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) on Internet Freedom in East Africa. The annual regional conference was held in Kampala, Uganda on 28-29 September 2015 bringing together dozens of local and international partners that included human rights defenders to discuss on issues like internet freedom, access to information, and safe use of internet.
The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders-Kenya was represented by Kamau Ngugi, Executive Director to offer human rights defenders perspectives, that included how the internet/social media which HRDs use to advance rights has equally been used to attack the rights defenders, hence the need to incorporate safety in internet use.The NCHRD-K organises training on digital security to enhance the safety of Kenyan human rights defenders at community level.
