Representatives from WWF-Kenya, MAMASE coordination office, Water Resources Management Authority -Mara Sondu region and Sub region, National Environmental Management Authority-Narok and the Narok County Environment Directorate convened in Narok in a meeting aimed at introducing the NEMA and Narok county officials to the functioning of Constructed Wetlands in lodges and hotels within the Maasai Mara game Reserve. The meeting also aimed at exploring how the institutions (WRMA, NEMA and County) can compel the lodges to comply with regulation regarding wastewater management.
All tourist facilities are supposed to install on-site waste management systems that meet effluent discharge systems and CW is one them. From the meeting, it was evident that there is need for further research to identify the potential impacts of soak away pits to the ground water in the Mara Ecosystem. Stakeholders have to also work closely towards safeguarding the critical and fragile Mara Ecosystem. The county government through the directorate of Environment was considered better placed to coordinate efforts towards environmental conservation in the County.
