Villa Zapakara was founded in 2009 by Daphne Bruijne and Mirjam Marks, who were inspired by the 'Tropenmuseum Junior', the children's museum of the Museum of the Tropics in Amsterdam. They wanted to give Surinamese children the opportunity to experience something new, to be inspired, and to broaden their horizon. The first exhibition was about the Ashanti in Ghana. In 2011, the second exhibition about India started, which saw over 22.000 visitors. The China exhibition that opened in 2013 has been very well-received, and its tours for school children during weekdays have been fully booked up to a year ahead. The museum's interactive exhibitions invite children to learn about other cultures, follow their curiosity and develop their creativity.
